Hullo Atuldom

Aruna Irani was born in Mumbai, India to an Irani father and a Hindu mother. Her father Faredun Irani ran a drama troupe, and her mother Saguna was an actress. She is the eldest of eight siblings. Three of her brothers Indra Kumar, Adi Irani and Firoz Irani are all associated with the film industry; Adi Irani is an actor & the other two are film makers. Actress Bindu is her cousin on her paternal side; it seems Aruna Irani’s father had two wives & Bindu is the niece of the second wife. (This surfaced in some recent videos on YouTube)

Like most actresses of that era, Aruna Irani had to give up her education because her family did not have enough money to educate all the children. She started off by acting small roles as a child actor; we have seen her in a song of ‘Ganga Jumna’ playing the childhood of the character Kamla (who grows up to be Azra), Mala Sinha’s childhood character in ‘Anpadh’ etc. (An interesting trivia:- Bindu played the daughter of Mala Sinha in ‘Anpadh’). She must have been around 8 or 9 years of age when she did these roles. She is said to have done several small roles in films such as ‘Jahanara’ (1964), ‘Farz’ (1967), ‘Upkar’ (1967) and ‘Aaya Sawan Jhoomke’ (1969). She just grew up with the grease-paint on and graduated to playing adult characters, many of them with Mehmood playing her romantic interest in films like ‘Humjoli’, ‘Aulad’, ‘Devi’, ‘Naya Zamana’ etc.

Aruna Irani has said she learnt dancing while working in films because she could not afford professional training. She has once said that during the song sequences of ‘Caravan’ & ‘Bobby’ she had to go through a lot of rehearsals but the end results are there for all to see. In fact she has many famous dance numbers to her name. She was the lady who was cast as Amitabh Bachchan’s first heroine in ‘Bombay To Goa’.

Aruna Irani has acted in over 500 films throughout Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Gujarati cinema, playing mostly supporting and character roles.

She received two Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Pet Pyaar Aur Paap’ (1984) and ‘Beta’ (1992), and holds the record for the most nominations in the category :-10. In January 2012, Irani received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the 57th Filmfare Awards.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, Aruna Irani switched to playing motherly roles, notably in ‘Beta’ (1992), for which she won her second Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. She earned two more nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in ‘Suhaag’ (1994) and ‘Kartavya’ (1995). From 1995-1996, she has been acting in television serials & also produced a few of them.

Another interesting trivia is that she had acted in “Kartavya” in 1979. It was not a big role but she was part of a lovely folk dance routine. She was lip syncing to Asha Bhosle’s singing. That song was written by Kafil Azar & composed by Laxmi-Pyare. We had Dharmendra, Nirupa Roy, Rekha etc enjoying the dance. I recall seeing the film at the time of its release & have always wondered whether the so-called tribals of India speak in such gibberish language or have such vague customs of dancing as our films have portrayed them – remember the song in ‘Shalimar’ that had some jinga lala etc in its lyrics.

I saw an interview of Aruna Irani with veteran journalist Bharathi Pradhan where she has spoken about her life & the hard times she had to go through. She also spoke of certain health issues which has led to impaired hearing.

Wishing Aruna Irani- the fighter who has overcome a lot of adversities in her life- A Very Happy Birthday.
