Blog Day :

6249 Post No. : 19328

This post is in memory of legendary singer Mukesh on his Remembrance Day (22 July 1923 to 27 August 1976).

The post is also in memory of arguably Mukesh’s greatest fan and compiler of Mukesh Geet Kosh, Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji(15 October 1949 to 27 August 2024), who passed away on the same day and month last year (on 27 August 2024).

At the outset, as I pen down my 100th post on this unique blog, I take the opportunity to express my heartfelt and sincere thanks to Atul ji for providing this platform on a platter for Hindi Film Music aficionados to not only contribute thoughts on films and songs but also flex flairs for writing.

Today’s song in memory of Mukesh and Harish ji is easily available but is unique in the sense that the details about the making of this song are not available in public domain.

Let’s discuss more about this song later in the post.

Since it is my centenary post, let me provide some information on how I got introduced and involved on the blog. Well, it is the same as that of many of our guest writers. Somewhere in 2011, searching the world wide web for any information or options to download songs for repeat listening etc., I stumbled upon this blog and instantly got smitten by its content, presentation and active participation by readers. The fact that only factual content to the extent possible was encouraged on the blog was an added attraction. All possible information on a song was readily available including the complete lyrics.

Then, to get actively involved, I started writing comments to the posts appreciating or adding any extra information that was known to self. This was followed by sending lyrics to the editor and eventually contribution of posts as a guest writer with the journey beginning on 09 July 2014 and reaching 100 in about 11 years.

Here is my first post dated 09 July 2014. An outstanding “NFS” of Mukesh. A distinctive and characteristic feature of today’s 100th post is that we return with yet another “NFS”.

Coming back to my statistics on the blog, it’s an average of just 9 songs a year. But for the jobs and career to keep the home fires burning, this figure could have been much higher.

Anyway, I think my frequency of appearances on the blog has increased substantially in the last couple of years. Speaking of appearances, I cannot help recollecting my self-introduction on this introductory post on Mukesh and his Actors – 1.

Reproducing the first few paras of the said post.

Well, the Halley’s comet is back on the blog.

So much so that it did not feature in nearly two centuries of latest posts. Reasons? Aren’t they cliches already on the blog?

Incidentally, speaking of the real macro universe comet itself, it last appeared in 1986 and is expected to pass by the pale blue dot next in July 2061. Second week of December this year, it reached the farthest point from the sun known as aphelion, thus beginning its journey towards the inner solar system.

So, the date for sighting arguably the most famous comet is set for July 2061 for earthlings alive then.

Coming back to the blog, we start with a new series Mukesh and his Actors. This has been a task which I had been contemplating for years and remained a non-starter mainly because I could not decide as to which actor, I should take up for the debut post.

Before we start with the post itself and regarding my infrequent appearances on the blog, I thought it would be politic to have a recap of the statistics of my 3 ongoing series on Mukesh.

Well, talking about comets, the world is now all ears, (eyes, brains included) to the new interstellar object “3I/ATLAS”. I shall take the liberty of digressing beyond one light day (distance travelled by Voyager 1 so far). A long post on Voyager 1 is due from my side and let me try to fructify it by December 19, 2025, when 3I/ATLAS will make its closest approach to planet Earth.

3I/ATLAS is some distant neighbor of solar system or just another cloud of gas and icy dust is the question on everyone’s mind though the latter is most likely. The unusual trajectory, high speed and other physical and chemical deviated characteristics are what are causing sleepless nights to researchers, scientists, astronomers and cosmologists. I am avoiding writing more on why this interstellar object has generated so much curiosity and hype these days as the post will then drift light years away from its theme and the special occasion.

Drifting, we are.

Rotating on earth’s axis, revolving around the sun, orbiting the milky way galaxy along with the sun, the movement of the galaxy itself to likely collide with Andromeda, the journey of our universe along with other universes into the unknown etc. Let me spare the mind-blowing speeds and apologize for drifting through the cosmos.

Coming back to the ocean world, in my first 7 posts, only 2 were Mukesh songs, the others being as diverse as Geeta Dutt, Surendra, Lata, Ravindra Jain, Uma Devi, Shamshad Begum et al.

Thereafter, I started with a series on Mukesh and his Composers, initially trying to highlight only 3 composers namely Naushad, Madan Mohan and SD Burman for what I considered a unique and unfortunate aspect as far as Mukesh songs for these composers are concerned.

All 3 composers engaged Mukesh in their initial films and had long gaps (some in decades) before he was called to sing again in their compositions. The three posts are here, here and here.

The first post on Mukesh’s collaboration with Naushad was sans the table which became a regular feature in subsequent posts. However, much later, I came up with another post on the duo featuring the popular list of songs in a table.

Here, it is.

Meanwhile, I started few more series such as Mukesh’s NFS, and his collaboration with co-singers and actors for whom he gave playback etc.
To sum up the status of the 4 series, here is yet another table.

Series No. of Posts till date
Mukesh and his Composers 41
Mukesh and his Co-Singers 14
NFS of Mukesh 4
Mukesh and his Actors 7

Well, the tally is 66 and there are a dozen more on his birth and death anniversaries not fitting in the themes of the series quoted above. About 20 odd posts are on other artists such as Rafi, Talat Mahmood, Lata etc. I have also written special posts on the complete discography of Surinder Kaur’s Hindi songs, songs sung by Nutan for herself, a tri-series on Sharda etc.

Thus, I have a lot of interest in other artists too, but needless to say, Mukesh holds a very special place. Multiple themes and artists are on the anvil and will duly follow, but efforts of representing the remaining few songs of Mukesh will continue with unrelenting zeal.

In the above four series, I have covered some important artists associated with Mukesh.

A lot more and if I may say so, more important artists remain to be covered and represented.

His duets with Lata and Asha, his songs under Shankar Jaikishan, Kalyanji Anandji and Laxmikaant Pyarelal, his songs for Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar etc. are yet to be covered. In these, I do carry the risk of learning that all songs under, with and for some artists are covered in their entirety on the blog. For example, all songs that he sang for Manoj Kumar are already covered on the blog. In such cases too, I intend to submit a table under some other artist with due mention of the same. The issue with taking up these artists is that I have to spend considerable time in making the table and hence the delay.

In this journey of posting Mukesh’s songs and associations with various artists, I have come across and learnt many unknown facets of his singing. Snippets not included as songs on records have been represented. Short songs, some running into mere seconds have been covered in full-fledged posts.

The search for missing and rare songs continues unabated. I am trying to organize posted and unposted songs separately. All these are work in progress but my varied interests in other fields check me from going full throttle with song posts on the blog.

Coming to today’s post, I once again pay my respects to Mukesh and Harish ji. In this post and the song, there is a special and added contribution of Harish ji. Of course, almost all songs that Mukesh sang are included in his compilation of MGK-II.

There are quite a few songs by Mukesh whose details are known, but the songs themselves are unavailable. In today’s case, it is just the opposite. The song is available, but the details are not known despite Harish ji meeting the composer in person. And in this regard too, the work of Harish ji is invaluable. With the footnote written for this song in MGK-II, yet another false and wrong attribution of the song on the net is busted.

In a way, it was a revelation for me too, as I sometimes held onto the information available on the net. I was aware of the song and had heard it a few times in the past as I have already stated that it is easily available.

Whilst carrying out the tri-post series on Sharda and specifically the post Mukesh and his Composers – 35, there is this much delayed film titled Maila Aanchal (1981) in which Mukesh has a solo and a duet with Suman Kalayanpur. These two songs are part of the 3 songs that he sang under her composition.

On the net, at many places, one more solo is falsely attributed to being part of this film. However, from MGK-II it is amply clear that this was a song composed by Madholal Damodar Master.

In all this frantic search for the details of the song, I had totally forgotten that I had earlier covered this composer in my first series. (Mukesh and his Composers).
Here is the post.

I am not adding any more information on the composer as this post has already gotten elongated (like the comet 3I/ATLAS😊). All details including multiple links on the life and works of the composer are available in my post (links included therein) referred to above.

In the footnote of today’s song, Harish ji has confirmed the composer as he had met him in person. But information regarding the film for which it was composed was not known to the composer himself. Thus, the name of the shelved film and the lyricist will most likely remain unknown.

I sought the assistance of Shri Hamraaz ji who also reiterated that the info provided in the footnote of MGK-II is all that is available as of now.

Composer Madholal Damodar Master retired from composing circa 1952. However, today’s song (composition and voice) sounds like the late 60’s if not 70s to me. But then, it seems there are absolutely no grounds for discrepant views on the matter.

The saving grace is that the song is available in the glorious golden voice of Mukesh.
With this, I end today’s centenary post, and once again thank Atul ji, more knowledgeable contributors, seniors and readers of the blog.

Song-Toone gham diye maine sah liye (Mukesh NFS)(1970) Singer-Mukesh, MD-Madholal Damodar Master
