‘Baat Ban Jaaye’ (1986) was produced by Anil Hanspal and Nitin Manmohan which was directed by Bharat Rungachary. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Utpal Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty, Raj Babbar, Amol Palekar, Aruna Irani, Jalal Agha, Shakti Kapoor, Adi Irani, Imtiaz Khan, Jagdeep, Prema Narayan, Viju Khote etc. The film belongs to the family comedy genre. It was the first film for Nitin Manmohan (son of actor, Manmohan) as a producer and second film as a director for Bharat Rungachary. Sanjeev Kumar passed away before the release of the film. However, he had completed all his work for the film.
The credit title of the film did not mention the names of the actors. Probably director felt that that since each actor in the film had his share of comedy, to present the film as a collective efforts of the entire cast in creating a family comedy film rather than showcasing the individual actors by mentioning their names. Incidentally, Sanjeev Kumar, Amol Palekar, Raj Babbar and Mithun Chakraborty were in the role of the prospective bridegrooms for the wealthy businesswoman, Zeenat Aman in the film.
The film’s director, Bharat Rungachary (1953 – 1995) started his filmy career as an assistant director to Hrishikesh Mukherjee in ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975). He became his chief assistant director in three films and the associate director in five films. He debuted as director in ‘Zameen Aasmaan’ (1984). He directed six Hindi films. He had also directed two TV serials – ‘Inkaar; (1992-93) and ‘Parivartan’ (1992). Bharat Rungachary passed away on July 4, 1995, at the age of 42 due to cancer. His last film as a director was Takkar (1995) which was released after his death. His nephew, Vivek Rangachary is the producer of a dozen films including ‘Lunch Box’ (2013) and ‘Ugly’ (2013).
The film is about a wealthy businesswoman, Zeenat Aman who hates rich men and wants to marry a poor but the cultured man. Utpal Dutt, her uncle tries to find for her such a bridegroom resulting in comical situations. When Adi Irani, a mechanic in Nisha’s factory meets Aruna Irani for some dispute solving, he becomes a prospective groom in the eyes of Utpal Dutt. But he turns out to be a married man. When Amol Palekar visits his house for a TV repair, Utpal Dutt finds him to be a suitable bridegroom for his niece. Similar is the position about Mithun Chakraborty as motor mechanic and Raj Babbar as the tourist guide. But all of them turns out to be wealthy men or become rich. At last, Zeenat Aman herself chooses Sanjeev Kumar, the wedding singer and gets married to him. But Sanjeev Kumar turns out to be her business rival who was secretly in love with her but the business rivalry has prevented him to express his love of her. The story in some details is as under:
Ashok Khanna (Shakti Kapoor), the younger brother of Ravi Khanna, the owner of Khanna Group of Companies has entrusted Bharat Sinha (Jalal Agha), the Legal Adviser of the Company to find out details about Nisha Singh (Zeenat Aman), the owner of Jay Group of Industries. Bharat gives all the details about Nisha which he has collected through his sweat heart, Aruna (Aruna Irani), the personal secretary to Nisha. Two main findings about Nisha is that ever since her late parent divorced, she has developed an aversion about rich men. As a result, she has decided to get married to a poor but cultured man. Secondly, she hates Ravi Khanna because he has snatched most of the contracts from her company.
Singh (Utpal Dutt), Nisha’s uncle is making a visit to Mumbai to stay with her for few days. His intention is to somehow get his niece, Nisha married before he dies. He is searching for a suitable poor and cultured man. He is sure that with so many poor people in India, it should not be a problem to find a suitable groom for his niece.
The very first day in Mumbai, Singh notices Ajay (Adi Irani) a mechanic in Nisha’s factory who has come to meet Aruna about some dispute. After getting his background as a poor worker, Singh explores him to be a candidate as a possible groom for Nisha. But he turns out to be a married man. After, few days, Singh sees Yeshwant Bhosle (Amol Palekar) in his house for repairing TV and he becomes his focus as a suitable groom for Nisha. But soon his invention of a new scientific instrument makes him rich. On a visit to Hyderabad, Singh meets a tourist guide Viju whom he sees as a possible groom to Nisha as he is single and alone. He calls him to Mumbai to get employed in Nisha’s Company. He does come to Mumbai but now as a rich man having got the secret treasure in Hyderabad. While traveling in Mumbai, there is a breakdown in Nisha’s car. A mechanic Prakash (Mithun Chakraborty) repairs their car while Singh visualises him to be a prospective groom for Nisha. After having ascertained that he is poor and unmarried, Singh employs him as a mechanic for the Company’s cars. But even Prakash turns out to be a missing son of a builder (Imtiaz Khan) and he has his fiancée, Rosy (Nisha Singh) to whom he intends to marry.
Tired of finding a suitable poor bridegroom for Nisha, Singh advises Aruna to go ahead with her marriage with Bharat. Ashok Khanna finds an opportunity to meet Nisha during Aruna-Bharat’s marriage. He has also arranged the performance of a wedding singer, Suraj Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) at the wedding. The wedding singer comes with his troupe and gives his performance. Nisha likes his performance. Next day, Suraj Singh visits Nisha’s house and meets her. On his request, Nisha takes him on a sight-seeing tour of Mumbai during which Suraj Singh proposes and Nisha accepts subject to the approval of her uncle, Singh. During the discussion with her uncle, Suraj Singh put two conditions for the marriage. First, the marriage will take place in his native village and second, after the marriage, Nisha would stay in his house in the village. While her uncle has strong reservations on his conditions, Nisha agrees to both the conditions.
With this development, Ashok Khanna becomes active for the preparation of the marriage of Suraj Singh who is none other than his elder brother, Ravi Khanna. He orders his staff to create a filmy type set representing a village with a house for the newly married couple for stay and arrange many junior artists as the villagers. The marriage ceremony is over and both Nisha and Suraj Singh shift to their new house in the so called village. They stay in the ‘village for about one year. Nisha gives birth to twins. This time Suraj Singh meets Nisha as Ravi Khanna. Nisha gets extremely angry on him as contrary to her wish, she has married a rich person who is her business rival. Ravi Khanna confesses that he genuinely loved her but their business rivalry prevented him in expressing his desire to marry her. For the sake of his love for her, he has also sacrificed his city life for one year by staying in the village with her. Nisha reconciles with Ravi Khanna and Bharat, Aruna and Ashok Khanna are happy with the end result of their efforts to unite both of them.
The film is a good attempt by a young Bharat Rungachary to present a family comedy with many hilarious situations. However, some frivolous scenes like attempt to molest Zeenat Aman by some goonda elements and Mithun Chakraborty fighting with them to protect her, the item songs picturised on Mithun Chakraborty and Raj Babbar act as a ‘speed breakers’ in retaining the uninterrupted flow of comical situations in the film. The real lead actor of the film is Utpal Dutt who is predominantly present in the film with his unique comical repartees. For a change, the director is successful in creating Shakti Kapoor’s role in whcih his actions and dialogues give an impression to the audience that he is a grey character. In the end, he turns out to be facilitator for Sanjeev Kumar to get married to Zeenat Aman.
The film had five songs written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by Kalyanji-Anandji. All the songs except one are more like item number songs, I present the first song from the film which is in line with the context of the story. The song is ‘Main Punjabi Hindustani’ rendered by Kishore Kumar which is picturised on Sanjeev Kumar.
Sanjeev Kumar is a ‘wedding singer’ who has come to perform at the wedding of Jalal Agha with Aruna Irani. The fact is that Sanjeev Kumar is Ravi Khanna, the business rival of Zeenat Aman. Shakti Kapoor is Ravi Khanna’s younger brother. Jalal Agha is the Legal Adviser of Ravi Khanna’s company. Shakti Kapoor has to do this drama to entice Zeenat Aman who has decided to marry a poor man which means that Sanjeev Kumar as Ravi Khanna has no chance to marry Zeenat Aman whom he secretly loves and their business rivalry prevents him to express his love to her.

Peevesie’ Mom.
Ditto my feelings in the same order to watch this film.
After listening the song, I felt that I will use this song for the 40th Remembrance Day of Sanjeev Kumar on November 5th. Since it is more than two months to go, I decided to use this song for this article.
