In the Indian traditional societal setting, the men are regarded as the bread winner for the family while the women are assigned as homemakers who stay at home and manage the kitchen, housekeeping, taking care of the children etc. In urban setting, some women have dual roles. They are not only the homemakers, but they are also the working women giving the financial support to the family. Men are not expected to be homemakers. These gender-based responsibilities have been majorly followed in India since long. The role reversal in responsibilities between husband and wife was unthinkable even in the last century and it is still not fully appreciated.
There has been some cases of role reversal taking place especially in metropolitan and urban India. I had known one such case in my office as early as in 1965 when the wife was working in my office and her husband was employed in a private firm. But the situation in the family forced the wife to think of resigning from her service to look after her infant when the alternative arrangements did not work out. Her husband volunteered to resign from his private job on a realistic consideration as the wife was getting higher salary than him. At that time, her husband was the talking point in my office as it was thought to be a revolutionary step by him.
‘Itni Si Baat’ (1981) was one such film based on the theme of role reversal of husband and wife albeit in a different situation. It was taken as a challenge to manage the household tasks by husband and the wife would manage the money by working to get better salary than her husband. The role reversal was on an experimental basis for a period of 3 months. The film was produced by K Raghava and was directed by Madhu M. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee, Arun Govil, Tamanna, Roopesh Kumar, Ashoo, Kanan Kaushal, Urmila Bhatt, Dinesh Hingoo, Sundar, Keshav Rana, Baby Geeta, Master Gautam etc. Madan Puri and Om Prakash made their special appearances in the film.
The gist of the story of the film is as under:
Raja (Sanjeev Kumar) works in an office in Mumbai for which he has travel daily by bus. He has seen Asha (Moushumi Chatterjee) traveling in the same bus route. They have travelled together several times but neither Raja nor Asha has made any beginning to say even hello to each other. One day, Raja has problem in buying bus ticket as he has 100 rupee note and conductor does not have a change. Asha helps him in buying his bus ticket facilitating their first inter-action. They meets regularly in the bus with some conversations which culminate into their liking for each other. They get married and in due course they become the parent of two children who have started going to school.
With his low salary, Raja finds it difficult to manage household expenses. They live in a rented house without having basic facilities. Asha bears the burnt of running the house smoothly. So, there are frictions between Asha and Raja. Asha thinks that Raja enjoys his office, sitting under a ceiling fan and she had to struggle in the house in a hot atmosphere while cooking on wood fired earthen stove. She demands a gas stove while Raja wants to buy a second hand scooter to avoid bus travel. As against this, Asha sees her neighbour, Meena (Kanan Kaushal) who stays with her husband in comfort. Raja on the other hand thinks that Asha is comfortable in home while he struggles to complete the extra load of work given by his boss (Asit Sen). He gets more upset when his office colleague (Roopesh Kumar) who happens to be his boss’s brother-in-law is much more in comfort, flirting with girls without doing much work. In short, Raja and Asha live in hardship and they have to find some solutions to make their lives easy.
Things comes to a boiling point when Asha messes with her food arrangements when Raja has invited the boss and his wife for a lunch to get a promotion. As a result, his boss goes back without having lunch and threatens Raja that he would be demoted. Raja has noted that his office colleague, though gets less salary than him, has been managing his house very smoothly, thanks to his wife. On the other hand, Asha has noted that her neighbour, Meena has been working in the office with much higher salary than Raja and she has been living in comfort. With these comparisons in the back of their minds, Raja decides to prove to Asha that he can manage the house much better than her. He suggests to Asha to let her work in the office like Meena and he would stay home to manage the house by taking three-month sabbatical from his office. She accepts his challenge and boasts that she would get more salary than him.
From the very next day, Raja take charge of the house and after few days, Asha gets a job in a shop. But as days pass, there is complete breakdown of the house. Raja is not able to manage the house within the salary Asha earns and passes on to him. The result is that he has to sell some vessels to get extra money. The landlord has cut-off the electricity supply in his house for not clearing the arrears of rent. There is a threat of his son losing his school for not clearing the arrears of school fees. Asha on the other hand looks for changing her job to get more salary but the offers are too odd to accept them. So, her efforts to get more salary do not materialise.
Before the end of three month period, Raja realises that the examples of his office colleagues on the basis of which he had passed the strictures on Asha that she is not able to manage the household efficiency are proved to be a deceit. Asha, on the other hand, also gets to know that Meena who boasted of getting a high salary is also from her deceitful activities. Both of them realise that they were wrong in assessing each other.
The film ends with Raja ready to leave the house to office and Asha offering him sugar-less tea as the sugar is exhausted in the house. But this time, Raja does not complain.
The film’s plot was good for a ‘middle of the road’ cinema with say about 90-minute duration. However, a good plot has been marred by avoidable additions of two sub-plots – Arun Govil-Tamanna romance followed by their marriage and Om Prakash-Ashoo as the parent of Asha. However, the excellent performance with a good chemistry between Sanjeev Kumar and Moushumi Chatterjee would have definitely lifted the interest of the audience in the film.
The film had five songs written by Anjaan which were set to music by Kalyanji-Anandji. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the second song, ‘youn na roothha maan bhee jaao’ rendered by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and Bhavna Shah picturised on Sanjeev Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee and Baby Geeta.
The context of the song is that Sanjeev Kumar has called his boss for lunch at home to influence him to get a promotion. However, Moushumi Chatterjee has messed up with food and as an alternative, she suggests to get the food from the restaurant. Sanjeev Kumar dismisses her suggestions during which he used expletives for his boss which are heard by him. The boss leaves without having food at Sanjeev Kumar’s house. Sanjeev Kumar gets annoyed with Moushumi Chatterjee. There are heated arguments between them and at one time, Sanjeev Kumar has threatened to slap her which makes Moushumi Chatterjee insulted. After the issue has cooled down, Sanjeev Kumar makes a reconciliatory overtures to Moushumi Chatterjee. The song is a bedroom banter between Sanjeev Kumar and Moushumi Chatterjee. Toward the end of the song, the daughter, Baby Geeta disturbs their intention.
