‘Bepanaah’ (1985) was produced by Sagar Bhagat and directed by Jagdish Sidana. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Poonam Dhillon, Rati Agnihotri, Kadar Khan, Dheeraj Kumar, Madan Puri, Satyen Kappu, Suresh Oberoi, Paintal. Gajanan Jagirdar, Sharat Saxena etc. It was an action drama film loosely based on Sidney Sheldon’s novel, ‘Rage of Angels’ (1980) which I had read long back.
The film revolves around the four main actors – Mithun Chakraborty, Shashi Kapoor, Rati Agnihotri and Poonam Dhillon. Mithun has migrated to Mumbai from a village in Central India after his parents were killed by a gangster. This event in his life makes him a gangster to take the revenge against the killer of his parents. He also knows that in Mumbai, his grandfather, Kader Khan is an industrialist. Once Mithun meets Kader Khan, he knows that his grandfather is the don of all the illegal activities in Mumbai. Kader Khan has floated many industries to become an industrialist as a front and Mithun runs a few of them. Mithun takes revenge by killing his parents killer for which is gets arrested.
During the court proceedings, Mithun has seen Rati Agnihotri, a lawyer who is assisting public prosecutor, Satyen Kappu. He falls in love with her but she is not interested in him. Besides, she is already in intimate relationship with Shashi Kapoor, a CBI Officer resulting in her becoming pregnant. However, Shashi Kapoor succumbs to the emotional blackmail of his dying father who has given his assurance to Poonam’s father that his son will get married to her. Shashi Kapoor gets married to Poonam and Rati Agnihotri is deserted without knowing that she is pregnant. A son is born to Rati Agnihotri but she cannot reveal his father’s name while taking admission in a school. Mithun comes to her help by allowing her son to use his name as the father. He still in love with her but she regards him as a well-wisher. The things become complicated when Rati Agnihotri comes to know that Shashi Kapoor is now happily married to Poonam Dhillon and Mithun is a gangster who is sought to be arrested by Shashi Kapoor. Poonam Dhillon also comes to know that her husband, Shashi Kapoor has a son from Rati Agnihotri out of the wedlock and Mithun has been of great help to Rati Agnihotri.
Obviously, Poonam Dhillon and Mithun Chakraborty have to die at the end. While Poonam dies while saving Mithun from the bullet shot by her husband, Mithun dies while saving Rati Agnihotri’s son. The film ends with Rati Agnihotri walking away from Shashi Kapoor telling him that her son’s father is Mithun.
When a Hindi film’s story is loosely based on a well-known English novel which is adapted to the Indian settings with ‘ingredients’ for the box office success, such a film has a chance to turn into a ‘hotch-potch’ product. ‘Bepanaah’ (1985) suffers from such a malaise. While ‘Rage of Angels’ was majorly a court room drama featuring an intense legal and political battles, in the background of mafia crimes, the film majorly concentrated on action drama with a love triangle involving a gangster and a police officer. The outcome in such a situation is predictable for Hindi film audience. The gripping story line with twists and the thrilling narratives in ‘Rage of Angels’, is missing in the film except during some parts of the first half of the film. The film failed at the box office and with this film, Shashi Kapoor’s tenure as a lead actor came to an end.
The film had five songs written by Nida Fazli which were set to music by Khayyam. I present the first song, ‘akelaapan mitaa do na’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle. The audio clip of the song has an extra antara (second antara) which is not in the song appearing in the film’s soundtrack.
The context of the song is that Shashi Kapoor as a CBI police officer is so much involved in his duties that he has no quality time to spend with his wife, Poonam Dhillon. One day, she gets the idea from her maid servant that the right time to seduce the husband is after the bath when she gets into her new cloths. So, Poonam Dhillon follows the same and is almost succeeds in her attempt to seduce her husband. But as soon as the song ends, Shashi Kapoor gets a telephone call which forces him to leave her alone to reach his office quickly.
I heard this song for the first time only yesterday and liked it very much. It is only today, I thought of writing this article on the occasion of Asha Bhosle’s 92nd birthday. This song is one of many examples of Asha Bhosle’s exceptional versalities as a singer. She has rendered the song for Poonam Dhillon at a lower pitch with varying her tone in some places to sound sensual in keeping with mood in the scene. Nida Fazli has well-written this seductive song without crossing the line of social decency.
Many many happy returns of day to Asha Bhosle. May she stays healthy, happy and active.
