‘Solvaan Saawan’ (1978) was produced by A.S.R. Anjaneyulu and was directed by Bharthi Rajaa. The cast included Amol Palekar, Sridevi, Adil Amaan, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sajjan, Madhukar, Deena Pathak, Savita Bajaj, Vijayalakshmi, Rajeshwari etc. The film was Bharathi Rajaa’s first foray in Hindi films as a director. This was Sridevi’s first Hindi film in a lead role. The film was entirely shot in Jharkhand in a month’s time in rural region. Hence, it was decided to write dialogues with a mix of Hindi and Bhojpuri languages. The film got a very limited theatrical release on January 22, 1979.
The film was a remake of Bharathi Rajaa directed Tamil film, ’16 Vayathinile’ (1977) in which Kamal Haasan and Sridevi were in lead roles. This was the first Tamil film which was shot entirelyly in outdoor locations in a rural region in Karnataka. The film became a box office hit. Amol Palekar while recalling his association with Sridevi in ‘Solvaan Saawan’ (Source: The Times of India, February 26,2018) had revealed that it was Kamal Haassan who called him to take his role in Hindi remake of the film. Before agreeing, he watched the Tamil film and insisted that Sridevi should work in Hindi remake as well. According to Bharthi Rajaa, Sridevi was not keen to work in Bollywood films as she was reluctant to leave her home and work in the new environment. But the director convinced her to do her role in the Hindi remake of the film. The film failed at the box office and Sridevi had to wait another four years to make a grand re-entry in Hindi films when ‘Himmatwaala ’ (1983) became a hit film.
The film’s VCD, albeit in an average quality, has now become available on one of the video sharing platforms. The story of the film is as under:
The film’s story is about 16-year Mehna (Sridevi) who stays with her mother (Deena Pathak). She has passed her matric and wants to pursue teacher’s profession in her village. She gets selected for the teacher course and is waiting for a call. Sridevi has a distance cousin, Gopal (Amol Palekar) who is a physically disabled with mental deficiencies. Being orphaned, he is being looked after by Mehna’s mother. Gopal secretly loves Sridevi but is afraid to express his love to her.
A young and handsome, Doctor Babu (Adil Amaan), a veterinary doctor visits the village and falls in love with Mehna who reciprocates his love. They meet quite often during which one day, she reveals that she has to leave the village to attend for a teacher’s course in a far-off town. But due to the emotional blackmail by Doctor Babu, she gives up her admission for the teacher’s course to be with him. Gopal has watched them meeting frequently and he has developed jealousy toward Doctor Babu.
After few months, Doctor Babu leaves the village to his hometown to marry a different girl. While leaving, he tells Mehna that when he was posted in this remote village, she was the only person with whom he could converse to overcome his loneliness. His relationship with her was only for his recreation as he did not want to marry a village girl. Mehna is distraught as she has not only lost a life partner of her liking, but she has also lost the opportunity to pursue the profession of a teacher. A marriage proposal from a nearby village for Mehna gets aborted when the villagers led by a ruffian (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) spread the canard that she had an intimate relationship with Doctor Babu who has deserted her. With the breaking of the marriage proposal, her mother passes away leaving her alone. With a series of shocks Mehna falls ill.
At this stage, Gopal gives Mehna all the supports that are required for a girl who is left alone. Gradually, she develops liking for him. She helps him in overcoming his deficiencies to the extent possible. She boosts his self-confidence and also tells him that if anyone in the village teases him as a lame person, he should not hesitate to slap him. He also tries to make himself presentable by a haircut, clean shave and clean dresses The village elders resent their close relationship. Mehna decides to get married to Gopal who is elated and readily agrees. She tells him to visit a nearby town to make purchases for their impending marriage.
The village ruffian (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) who was once insulted by Mehna by spitting on his face when he had beaten up Gopal, sees an opportunity to take revenge of his insult. Mehna being alone in the house, he visits her and tries to rape her. Gopal returns from the town in time and confronts with him but he cannot cope with him due to his disabilities. He picks up a large stone and hits him on his head killing him instantly.
The film ends with hand-cuffed Gopal being taken in a train to a prison. As the train departs, he promises Mehna that he would definitely return one day to marry her.
I liked the film for its story and the reality in the depiction of the rural atmosphere. The use of Bhojpuri dialect in most of the dialogues add authenticity to the story with a rural background. I have also watched its Tamil original film which is available with English sub-titles. In both the films, Sridevi in the role of a village girl of ‘Solvaan Saawan’ (16 years of age), has given superb performances.
After watching Sridevi’s performances in both the version of the films, I am reminded of a colloquial Hindi proverb, होनहार बिरवान के होत चीकने पात in my school days. The literal meaning of this proverb is that a plant with its shining leaves gives the promise of a large tree. When Sridevi acted in this film she was like a plant with shining leaves giving a sign of becoming a talented actor in her later years. In the later years, she did prove her versatilities in films like ‘Sadma’ (1983), ‘Mr. India’ (1987), ‘Chaandni’ (1989), ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1989), ‘Lamhe’ (1991) among many others.
While the Tamil original film and its Telugu remake were box office hits, unfortunately, ‘Solvaan Saawan’ (1979) was a big flop at the box office though it was critically acclaimed. The producer of the film had alleged that the distributor of the film did not make efforts to publicise the film as it was a low budget film without star cast. The film got a very limited theatrical release.
The film had four songs written by Naqsh Lyallpuri which were set to music by Jaidev. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘goriyaa ho ho goriyaa’ rendered by Yesudas, Vaani Jayaram and Chorus. One of the features of the song is that the full mukhda of the song is rendered by male/female chorus while antaras have been rendered by Yesudas and Vaani Jayaram. Another feature of the song is that Yesudas sings the song somewhat differently because he is singing for Amol Palekar in the role of a mentally challenging person. The mukhda tune of the song reminds me of haaye re haaye ye mere haathh mein teraa haathh from ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ (1964). Probably, both the songs may have been inspired from one of the Punjabi folk song tunes.
The context of the song is that Sridevi has instructed Amol Palekar not to work for the village ruffians and if anyone calls him by his derogatory nick name, he should slap them. He has exactly done the same to Adil Amaan and Kulbhushan Kharbanda and out of fear, he runs to Sridevi to reveal his action. At first, she becomes serious but later bursts into laughter making it a joyous occasion to join the nearby farm workers who are singing the song. The last antara of the song is a confidence booster for Amol Palekar.
