#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————

After the holy month of shraavan, Ganesh Utsav, Eid and other regional festivals it is time for celebration of another big festival all over the country.

It is time for Mahaalayaa. From tomorrow onwards, nine day long or ten day long nav-durgaa festival will commence all over India. In the state of Gujarat where I have been residing for last twenty-one years, people take ‘pad yaatraas’ (walking on foot) during this festival and offer their prayers to the Goddess Ambe (Amba jee), Chamunda Devee (Chotila), Kalika Maataa (Pavagadh) and many other shrines.

Recently I have shifted to Kachchh from Vadodara. I have relocated to the same place that I left in 2010. The famous temple of ‘Desh Devee Ashapura Maata’ is situated in the Lakhpat Taluka of Kachchh, at Mata No Madhh. This temple is dedicated to Maataa Ashapura the deity of former rulers of Kachchh State the Jadejas. The deity is also considered as the patron deity of Kachchh and is believed to be the protector of people around here. From my place the distance to this temple is around 130 kms. We used to visit this temple during Navratri Festival of those years. Buses ply for employees and their families on any one or two days during this festival so that people can visit and take darshan of Goddess Ashapura. Many people perform pad-yaatraas. Many social organizations and volunteers put up camps to help these ‘pad-yaatrees’ take rest during their long route. These camps also serve them water, food, and prasaad. For the last few years the people working in my department have also been contributing to this cause by offering grocery, water bottles, and money collected from contributions that were handed over to the Village Head who would make these arrangements. This year I got the opportunity to contribute, though I was not able to join the team that visited the camp yesterday night. While watching all these activities I was reminded of the famous ‘maataa song’ ‘chalo bulaawaa aayaa hai’ from the 1983 movie ‘Avtaar’. I was surprised to note that this song is not yet covered on the blog. Today I am presenting this song wishing all a great, safe and happy ‘Nav-durgaa’ – ‘Navraatree’ festival ahead.

“Avtaar-1983” was produced and directed by Mohan Kumar for his home production Emkay Enterprises. It had Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Sachin, A.K. Hangal, Sujit Kumar, Rajni Sharma, Madhu Malini, Yunus Parvez, Shashi Puri, Gulshan Grover, Pinchoo Kapoor, Ranjan Grewal, Preeti Sapru and others. Madan Puri had a guest appearance in this movie. Story of this movie was written by Mohan Kumar and Mushtaq Jalili. Screenplay of this movie was written by Mohan Kumar and dialogues were written by Mushtaq Jalili. Editing of this movie was done by Pratap Bhatt.

‘Avtaar-1983’ was passed by Censor Board on 27.01.1983. (HFGK Vol-VI (1981-1985) mentions in the foot note of this movie page that this film was re-certified with English sub-titles by Censor Board on 06.05.1983). This movie had five songs (including one two-part song) penned by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

So far three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. This song under discussion is the fourth song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

The song is picturised on Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi and others (I am unable to identify the actor lip syncing in the voice of Narinder Chanchal). This song takes place in the movie when Avtaar Kishan and his wife take their ailing son to the temple of Maataa Vaishno Devee for her blessings and get him cured of his sickness. That duly takes place as the song comes to an end, much to the relief of the grateful parents.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The same team of of Anand Bakshi, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Chanchal alongwith Rafi had delivered the blockbuster maataa song ‘toone mujhe bulaayaa sheraawaaliye’ from the movie ‘Aasha-1980’. Rafi had passed away in 1980, and so in this song he gets replaced by Mahendra Kapoor. Additionally, the voice of Asha Bhonsle gets added in this song to sing for Shabanaa Azmi.

Let us listen to this ‘maataa’ song from “Avtaar”(1983) on the occasion of the commencement of Navratri celebration..
