Blog Day :

Hullo Atuldom

Wishing all the followers of the blog a Happy Dassehra. Happy Vijayadashmi. A day which is the culmination of the Sharada Navaratri. Navaratri means nine nights & Vijayadashmi is the 10th day when all the festivities reach a finale.

Much of North India would have had Raam-Leela as part of the festivities & we will witness Ravan-Dahan on the 10th day.

In West India we have the Devi installed in the form of Ambemaa with Aarthis, Garba & Dandiya forming the part of celebrations. Recently, I learnt that the Dandiya-sticks are representative of the weapons that were used by Ambemaa (Durga Maa) in her battle against the Rakshasaa “Mahishasura”.

East India, normally, joins the festivities from the 6th day i.e. from Shashti when idols of Durga Maa, her children Ganesha & Kartikeya, along with Maa Lakshmi & Maa Saraswathi are brought home & installed with accompanying rituals. These idols are then taken for immersion in the nearby waterbodies on Vijayadashmi day, havinglooking after the comfort of Devi Maa over five days, symbolising that the Mother Goddess has gone back to her Abode.
(As I was writing this, the idols from the puja pandal of the local Bengali Cultural Association was taken for immersion)

South India, also, has the Mother Goddess as the focus of the celebrations. First three days the mother is celebrated in the form of Durga Maa, next three days it is the Maa Lakshmi form & Maa Saraswathi is worshipped on the last three days. Vijayadashmi day is considered auspicious to embark on many new ventures. Little children are introduced to the ALPHABET on this day. They are made to sit on the laps of their elders, and they are guided by the elder to write for the first time in their life.

Of course, the temple in Tirupati & other temples of Lord Balaji have their ‘Brahmotsava’ during the same 9-day period.

I remember, as children, we used to keep books & all the other important items related to studies, for the pooja on the 8th day. These would be given to us after the pooja on Vijayadashmi day. What this meant was an official holiday from studying for one day i.e. on Navami day. Later, I learnt that, this is part of Ayuddha Pooja, meaning all things related to one’s trade is worshipped on this day. Only, this year I read somewhere that the Pandavas also worshipped their weapons on this day, all those eons ago, when they were coming out of their exile.

In context with the modern age and times, I had kept my laptop for pooja too, after it came back from the service engineer three days back. So, this post of mine is the ‘Shubh Aarambh’, of writing fairly regularly, I hope. 🙂 🙂

——————————————————————————————————————-
Since we are on the topic of ‘Maa’ I have chosen a song where the lady is a mother to a 4-year-old girl. They are staying with ‘mean’ & ‘cruel’ relatives. One day, the lady gets the news that her husband is returning, and she is overjoyed. This joy turns to sorrow when she finds out that he has passed away in an accident. Shortly, thereafter she too passes away, leaving the poor, little girl at the hands of the cruel relatives. The rest of the film is about the little girl’s quest into the netherworld to try and bring her parents back to life.

Asha Parekh played mother to Baby Rani, with Satyen Kappu & Lalitha Kumari playing the mama & mami. Rajendra Kumar was Asha Parekh’s husband. The film was called “Rani Aur Lalpari” where Reena Roy played Lalpari. Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo, and Master Abbas Ali were part of the supporting cast with Master Abbas playing Rani’s best friend Pappu who had answers to all her doubts.

I had seen this film in parts on Television ages ago, and was reminded of it yesterday as it played over doordarshan. I felt the character of Pappu was very sweet and the manner in which he dispels doubts was a feather in the writer’s cap, I must admit.

Sample this:- The children are seeing the immersion of Ganpati idols from the terrace of Pappu’s house. Rani askes her friend that if gods lived in heaven, then why are we immersing the idol in the sea. Pappu replies that the way to heaven is through the sea, and he gives an answer which sounds very logical. (My suggestion to the readers would be to see the film to enjoy the dialogue)

“Rani Aur Lalpari” had a long list of actors in guest & special appearances with varying lengths of screen-time with Neetu Singh having the longest screen-time as Cinderella. Vasant Desai was the music director for songs written by Balkavi Bairaagi. Asha Bhonsle, Dilraj Kaur and Manna Dey were the playback singers used for the 7 songs of which one is on the blog with a post by Sadanandji.

The film had a lot of trick photography in pre computer aided special effects era. The story had a healthy mix of Indian mythology and make believe. Another gem by the writer, is the conversation between Yamraj (Premnath) & little Rani when she requests him to return her parents. He says that is not possible. Then, she asks him for a loving brother which he grants; she tells him that that would be impossible if her parents are not there. Yamraj admires the little girl’s smartness & equates her with a lady who had outwitted him ages back; the girl asks him if he is referring to Savitri.
(I should thank doordarshan’s yesterday’s telecast for pointing towards this little titbits from the film)

No prizes for guessing why I have chosen a song featuring Asha Parekh for this post. She turns a year older today. She was into playing parallel lead during the second half of the 1970s. in films like ‘Udhaar Ka Sindhoor’, ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’, ‘Paakhandee’ etc. i.e. she had not yet taken to playing a sacrificing or weeping bhabhi, mother etc meaning the traditional characters usually assigned to actresses after their career as ‘heroine’.

Here we have a just-over-30 Asha Parekh being sung a lullaby to by the little daughter in the voices of Dilraj Kaur & Asha Bhosle.
