Blog Day : 3778 Post No. : 14758

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Once upon a not-so-long a time ago the anniversary page on our blog said that Helen – the dancing diva – celebrates her birthday on 21st October and I had sent this song – “Lovelina, Aa Gaya Main“, from ‘Agent Vinod’ (1977) for the occasion. Then over the years we got enlightened that her birthdate was 21st November. And as I sit to write this, further enlightenment strikes – she turns 80 today!!!! WOW!!! And she has been entertaining us since she was 13, having appeared in ‘Awaara’ in 1951 – that is 67 years in public eye. Of course, the last time I saw her in front of the camera was on satellite television when she appeared on the chat show ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ along with another favourite of mine – Asha Parekh. And so far, the last film that she has appeared in is ‘Heroine’ (2012) which is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and starred Kareena Kapoor in the main lead. In there she portrays the character of a film artiste who is past her prime and is forgotten by the industry.

But the truth is Helen is not a forgotten has-been as far as the industry and her fans are concerned. She is still remembered fondly whenever we hear songs that she had performed to. Her sprightly steps, her outfits which were never garish even when there were sequins and feathers stuck on them, her luxuriant hair done up in various styles – are somethings which no other dancer or actress has ever tried to copy. She was never called a plain item girl, she was always the supporting actress who had some substance to her role even if it was two or three songs, with a few emotional scenes and there were films she was the second heroine pining for the hero and would give up her love or life in the climax so that the lead pair could live HAPPILY EVER AFTER. She has had a HAPPILY EVER AFTER life personally too even though she is her husbands’ (Salim Khan) second wife, theirs is a one big happy family and all of her step children have bonded closely with her. She has an adopted daughter who was given a grand wedding in 2014 and is now a grandma to that girl’s child. Her family is growing and hope her happiness grows too.

‘Ram Balram’ is a 1980 movie produced by Tito and directed by Vijay Anand. The movie was an average success at the box office. It brought Jai (Amitabh) and Veeru (Dharmendra) together after a gap of five years – five years after the super successful ‘Sholay’ (1975). ‘Ram Balram’ was the story of two ‘chachere bhais’ (cousins) who have a score to settle with Ajit – another of their chacha – who is responsible for all the calamities that struck their family. There is also a nautch girl – Tarabai (Helen) – who has some axe to grind against Ajit. As the movie moves to the climax, we have the brothers and Tarabai reaching their goals but in the melee Tarabai dies but not before seeing her daughter (Zeenat Aman) happy and in love with Ram (Dharmendra). Today’s song is a typical ‘trying to distract the villains’ henchmen’. The song is sung by Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Dilraj Kaur. It has both Zeenat Aman and Helen dressed in sarees (unusual for them) dancing a typical Dharmendra dance. The song was written by Anand Bakshi.

I had been reserving this song for a rainy day- for a time when I write a last-minute post. And so here it is to wish both Zeenat Aman (had her birthday on 19th– turned 67) and Helen a very happy birthday.

beda paar lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye

Blog Day : 3758 Post No. : 14728

Happy November to Atuldom

Start of the winters. Bangalore has suddenly turned colder post Navaratri and gearing up for the next most important festival in India – Deepawali.

‘Saajan Bina Suhaagan’ – released in 1978 – was produced and directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. The songs were written by Indeevar and music was by Usha Khanna. When I had heard the songs of this movie I had imagined Usha Khanna to be a rather young person. It was much later I became enlightened that she was also the music director for another set of songs which I love to hear – songs from ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ (1959). But that is not the purpose of this post.

The reason for this post is the small girl in the song who turns a year older today. She must have been all of 11 or 12 at the time of this movie. Movies used to take close to a year or two to complete those days not like present times when we hear of start to finish schedules and the movie quickly reaching the finish-line i.e. the cinema theatre. There were many reasons for the movies of the past taking time to complete and many of those reasons are not there nowadays. I don’t intend to go into the technique changes that film making has undergone.

So, the little girl of the song – Bulbul (Padmini Kolhapure) – is the pet of her parents and sisters. She is in love with her piano and loves to sing. And all is well in paradise till the father (Shreeram Lagoo) finds he is terribly ill and decides to go away from the family to undergo treatment. The mother (Nutan) also is aware of this but keeps it a secret from her daughters. Most of the movie is devoted to showing how the mother copes with the situation and how she has to also shield her daughter Bulbul from any traumatic news as she (Bulbul) too has a congenital heart problem- “hole in the heart” as the movie says. Further problems arise when one hospital ward attenant (TP Jain) starts blackmailing the mother about revealing all secrets to the children. The movie moves on to show how Nutan copes with a sick Bulbul, marriage of the elder daughter Basanti (Radhika Bartake) and a murder charge – Nutan murders TP Jain. So that is a fair idea about the movie.

Today’s song has Barkha (Aarthi Chopra) and Bulbul (Padmini) bullying their “hone waale Jeeja ji” (Vinod Mehra) who is sporting enough to agree to all the pre-wedding conditions that the saalis lay out. Suresh Wadkar, Anuradha Paudwal (who has turned 64 a few days back) and Dilraj Kaur are the playback singers.

So, the little Bulbul – Padmini Kolhapure – is a grown up lady now. She has a large number of movies in her repertoire where she has been a co-actor to most of stalwarts of Bollywood. She has been around since 1974, took a brief sabbatical after her son was born and returned to movies and television; this time playing roles of mother etc. to actors like Shahid Kapoor. And to think she is only as old as the Khans who are still playing the male lead.

Here is wishing the little Padmini a very Happy Birthday.

arre gharwaali bin
ghabaraaya dil
toh saali ji tumko bula loonga
chhathi shart to suniye
didi ki taarif mein hamesha
nayi kavita roz sunaoge
kavita meri

tulsi ke dohe suna doonga
saatvin ye shart hai hamaari
ki didi bachchee nahin khilayegi
arre didi ko kasht
na doonga kabhi
bachchon ko khud hi sambhaaloonga

meri bhi ek shart suno ji
are bas, bas, bas
shaadi zara honey to do
jo bhi kahogi main maanoonga
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)

Hullo to all in Atuldom

“Maan Gaye Ustaad”(1981) was a Shibu Mitra directed movie.

Chandan Singh (Pran) is a farmer who lives in a village called Ramgarh along with his wife, Malti (Sonia Sahni), and two children, Munna and Munni. One day Malti gets molested by three city goons, Jaikishan (Ajit), Rajan, and Banoo (Rajan Haksar). Chandan intervenes, but is attacked, and Malti is shot dead. The children get separated, while Munna is adopted by a Muslim male named Abba (Om Prakash) and is re-named Shera, Munni is adopted by a Hindu family and re-named Geeta.

Years later the three estranged family members are fated to meet again – this time Geeta is a con-woman, who has a con-man boyfriend, Kishan (Shashi Kapoor), who is on the lookout for the man who killed his photographer brother (Chandrasekhar), and believes that Chandan is the killer; while Chandan, who is now known as Chandan Dada, a hoodlum, has been arrested for killing a man named Rajan; while Shera, a hit-man and hoodlum himself, has feigned his arrest, after accepting a contract from none other than Jaikishan – to kill Chandan!!

The movie then goes through the normal way of first bringing the family together with the help of the song that the father had taught his children before calamity struck the family and they got separated.

The movie was almost like a show case for Pran. He had a song filmed on him and that song appeared three times in the movie. He got to take revenge from the villains, had a beautiful wife in Sonia Sahni, and he also got a qawwali which was a competition between him and Amjad Khan.

But this is not the only movie where he had songs to emote too. We have loved him with Ashok Kumar in so many songs, and I am sure everyone will agree that the most entertaining one was in “Victoria No. 203” – “do bechare bina sahaare dekho pooch pooch kar hare”.

But one cannot forget him with Kishore Kumar either- “Aake seedhi dil pe katariya oh sawariya” (Half Ticket) or Amitabh Bachchan – “Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi”.

And we should not forget that Pran’s innings as a “good” character artist began with his “malang chacha” mouthing “kasme vaade pyaar wafa sab baatein hai” “in Upkaar”.

He began his filmi career in pre-independence era with Yamla Jat, Khajanchi, Chaudhary etc in Lahore in Punjabi. His Hindi film run began with “Khandaan” (1942. Here I feel like mentioning the other “Khandan” (1965) where he played a villain to make the life of the hero Sunil Dutt miserable.

His career in Bombay (Mumbai of today) started with “Ziddi” which was also a break for DevAnand and by 1950 Pran was a premier villain in Bollywood. He was the most sought-after villain opposite Dilip- Raj- Dev through the 50s and 60s. We have seen him being mean to every other hero of that period Dharmendra, Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, and any other hero we can think of (I am not going into the Roster of the heroes of the sixties here).

During this period, he had a brief role in Manoj Kumar’s “Shaheed” which was not a negative character.

But post “Upkaar” he had a second image change and we could see him as a good grandfather “Parichay”, friend “Zanjeer” “Guddi” “Beimaan” etc alongwith being the badman.

He had a style all his own be it in getting into various getups that went with the character he played or the blowing of smoke rings and holding the cigar or cigarette in a different way I each movie. There are many present-day character actors- Gulshan Grover for example- who swear on Pransaab being their role model much the same way as heroes copy Dilip- Raj- Dev. 🙂

He would have been celebrating his 98th birthday today (12 February 2018). I just could not get this date go by without we posting a song filmed on Pransaab. For today’s song Mohd. Rafi has given his voice alongwith Dilraj Kaur and Chandrani Mukherjee. This song appears about three times in the movie- once in happy times when Chandan Singh is the family man and farmer, once when he is so “good” a prisoner that the jailor Ashok Kumar trusts him to let him play around the jail with his grandson. And finally, at the climax of the movie when his (now grownup) children are tied up by the villain (I am unable to locate that video).

Today also happens to be the birthday of a person who became a friend thanks to this blog. We know him as Avinash Scrapwala. Here I would also like to wish him all the very best in life. Best wishes are also due to another Atulwaasi- Nitin Shah and his wife celebrate their Wedding Anniversary today. Here is wishing them long years of togetherness.

Blog Day : 3473 Post No. : 13949

“Heera Moti”(1979) was produced by Ratan Mohan and directed by Chaand for R M Art Productions, Bombay. The movie had Shatrughna Ainha, Reena Roy, Danny Denzongpa, Bindu,Purnima,Ajit, Om Shiv Puri, Anwar Hussain, Narendranath, Dev Kumar, Shetty, Randheer, Omkar, Master Raju, Jairaj,
Rajan Haksar, Master Saleem, Radhey Shayam, Keshav Rana, Bhagwan Dada, Rajan Kapoor etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Two of these songs have been covered in the blog. One was covered in 2009 another in 2013.

Here is the third song from “Heera Moti”(1979) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Dilraj Kaur. Ahmad Wasi is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Only the audio of this song is available. One can notice that Dilraj Kaur was being asked to sing in Asha Bhonsle style. In fact, in the post Asha Bhonsle phase of his career, O P Nayyar tried to make other female singers to sing like Asha Bhonsle but he was unable to recreate the same magic with them.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song. My guess is that this song was picturised on Reena Roy.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra long ago.

aahhaaa hhaaaa hhaaa

aaa haa. haa
tan phool saa
baanhon ki lachak jaise ho daali
main roop kaa ik baag hoon
tu baag kaa maali

tu baag kaa maali
mere baag ka maali
rakhwaali karo tum meri ee
rakhwaali karo tum meri
duniyaa ki nazar se
dekho meri jaan khud ko kabhi
meri nazar se
haayye meri nazar se
tum khud ko dekhte ho o

deewaani hoon teri ee
aa..haa…aaa

dil thhaam ke
raste mein khadi hoon
dil tod de yaa jod de
kadmon mein padi hoon

likh de meri taqdeer zaraa
likh de meri taqdeer zaraa
apni nazar se
dekho meri jaan khud ko kabhi
meri nazar se ae ae
haaye meri nazar se
tum khud ko dekhte ho o

‘Saajan Mere Main Saajan Ki’ is a movie released in 1980. It was directed by Hiren Nag and produced by Ramraj Nahata. It had a star cast of Ashok Kumar, Raj Babbar, Raj Kiran, Rameshwari, Kaajal Kiran, Shashikala, Dina Pathak, Madan Puri etc. Songs were written and composed by Ravindra Jain. I have never seen the movie and so I have no idea what it was all about.

# Best wishes on ‘Uttaraayana to all #

During ‘Doordarshan’ days, till ‘cable TV’ had not invaded our households, I used to watch all the movies that would be on Doordarshan on Sundays or on special occasions. (I also liked to watch the ‘award winning’ regional language films. Few names of such movies that immediately come to my mind are Mahanadi (Oriya, Kamal Hassan), Shwet Pathorer Thaala (Bangla), and ‘Kalaripayattu’ (Malayalam), ‘Kummati’etc etc.

LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS…Song No. 11
———————————————————–

it is not that Unreleased films were the speciality of the 40s or 50s. on the contrary, the percentage of such films has increased from the last few years. What I learnt from last few days, while working on this series is, that the number of incomplete or unreleased films was the maximum- to the extent of almost running over 100- during the years 70s and 80s. If you see the statistics, you will find that the number of censored films has also increased systematically from 1970 onwards. In 1990, it touched 200 films and thereafter from 2000, it has always been between 200 to 300, touching 250 in 2005.

ASAD Gangout in Bangalore (5th October 2014)… Part 2 (a.k.a The Build Up)
—————————————————————————–
Once we’d decided it would be Bangalore, the next thing was to decide the specific venue and the event arrangements. In order not to bombard all Atulites with the organizing details, we decided to co-ordinate the event in a separate e-mail thread involving just the participants.
