Rest in Peace – Dharmendra (8/12/1937 – 24/11/2025)
During last week I have written posts of two Dharmendra -Hema Malini songs, and as I said, youtube was throwing up more such songs at me. I have saved many songs now featuring Dharmendra. Some of these are outdoor songs, showing refreshing locations, like riverside, mountains, trees etc.
Dharmendra has left this mortal world, where everything is mortal. We can hope that some memories will remain immortal till this “faani” intelligent humanity’s existence. So “Lafaani” is nothing. Dharmendra himself was among many things, an urdudaan, and wrote shayari in urdu. During his heydays as a star, he appeared shy of media. Only lately he has been giving some interviews and appearing on TV shows. That is when the real personality has come to light.
I just remembered that I have seen his name in the list, featuring the translations of articles written in urdu by film personalities in the book “Yeh un dinon ki baat hai”. I found the book, and read the article now, titled “Mera Bachpan aur Jawani” published in Ruby – May, 1977. He talks about many things, including his drinking, on his linkage with various actresses, says some things about Meena Kumari too, without elaborating. Ends the article with this para:
Before I stepped into the world of films, I had heard a lot about the Raj Kapoor-Nargis and Dilip Kumar-Kamini Kaushal pairings. I too would fancy forming a similar duo with someone. Once I became an actor, the desire got intense and finally my wish was fulfilled. Let it be – her name can’t be included in the list as my first friend, but I can certainly say that she is the ultimate one.
Obviously, many things are lost in translation. If read in Urdu, this part would convey different emotion. In the part which is reproduced in Urdu(roman script), he refers to his father as “mere waalid buzurgwaar”, which is translated in English as “my old father”. We can only be thankful that “mere waalid buzurgwaar” did not turn into ‘my old man”, as the Americans say. “Buzurgwaar” is a more respectful term for addressing/referring to an aged, dignified person. The fact his referring to his father as such in Urdu, reveals that he considered his father to be respectable, on three counts. Firstly as his father, secondly as an aged person and third is the wisdom, maturity, gained with age and experience.
Talking of this reminds me of my father, who shared his birthdate with Dharmendra, but two years younger. He also left the world a few months back, after being ill for a few months. My pitiful attempt at an obituary for him is this:
“Allah swt has granted him an easy path from this world to the other world, Alhamdullillah. Our Abba was an intellectual, well read and all rounded, balanced person.
He was never strict with us, though a remote parent, as he was on work and my mother had all the responsibility of watching our coming/going and discipline. In the long run, the decisions he made for me, have turned out well and the Almighty granted barakah in them, Alhamdullillah.
His working life, 33 years from 1964 to 1997, for the BEST has been, eventful about lessons learnt, on friends and foes. I wanted to write about them, but he said no. Unwilling to share the experiences. He was the founding member of BEST Officers Association. The fight against nepotism, resulted in the change of policy, and later IAS officers headed the PSU. The foundation on struggle for justice is now a forgotten legacy. He was popular and much loved in his friends’ circle, most of whom are no more.
May Allah SWT forgive Abba and us all for any transgression, acts of commission and omissions, and grant him Jannat ul Firdaus. Aameen.”
I did not mean to write about my own father here, but once the birthdate on 8th December is mentioned, things flowed from there.
In some ways, Dharmendra died rich, as he has left behind two families, with two sets of children and grandchildren. All of whom will be missing him and praying for his soul and salvation. It is an encompassing state to be in, and guilt free conscience, as having done his duty and justice to the best of his given abilities and providence.
The song being posted is a solo by Rafi Sahab, in the film “Dharam Veer” 1977. It is well written and better composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The filming, though on out-door location could have been a bit more refined. Dharmendra is singing, showing attitude to the princess Zeenat Aman. The lyrics and singing tone have enough of attitude, of doing a favour to the princess.
Sort of:
“Maan mera ehsaan arey nadaan
Ke main ne tujh se kiya hai pyaar”
Similar situation, but the “Aan” song is eminently watchable. Audio song is so much better than the video of this one. One also wonders if Rafi sahab ever saw these films and songs. The way the teasing and masti of his rendition is translated on screen, would have earned Dharam paaji, and some others heros of 60’s and 70s (Many big names will feature in the list) a rap on the knuckles from Rafi Sahab, if the latter was ever so presumptuous and demanding.
The other solo on the same pair is much better filmed. I have just visited the page, found the interesting stats in the comments. In around 20 years from 1961 to 1981, Rafi Sahab has 114 songs for Dharmendra including 62 solos. Two of these are in Dharam – Veer.
The association starts with this super sensitive solo song, continues with the solos and duets till “Baghavat” 1982. His filmography reveals he is also the star with maximum Guest appearances and cameos.

Nice post Nahm jee. I like this song very much and this was in my wish list too. Thanks for this post and a tribute to actor Dharmendra.
Your tributes to your father is touching and we too pray for him. It is his greatness that in his last days he forgive all who weren’t good to him. May god rest his soul peace!
