Mukesh and his Co-Singers –15
I am extremely delighted to present this next post on Mukesh and his co-singers to the readers of the blog.
Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur. Two singers who renditions are remembered and enjoyed to this day mainly because of the unique sweetness in their duets.
Their standalone solos and duets with other singers are legendary. But when they came together, the melody was amplified and in a different league altogether. The charm and harmony in their voices is very much evident. Most of the songs that they sang were usually soft romantic numbers.
In many films they had only one song. But many such films are remembered only for the duet of Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur. Their voices blended perfectly creating iconic songs.
Suman Kalyanpur’s wiki page and this blogpost on SOY give plenty of details on her career and songs. As such, I shall skip the same.
Moving ahead, here is the table. A bouquet of 36 melodious and choicest gems of Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur. The name of the songs in the second column is enough to produce interest and admiration for their songs.

PS: Suman Kalyanpur and Mukesh have also sung one duet each in Punjabi and Gujarati languages. They are not added in the list above for obvious reasons.
I shall briefly describe each of the songs in a line or two. Readers have the liberty of straying away from the table and click on the links to enjoy the songs. Links in the second column take you to the post on the same blog for more details and situation of the songs.
1 was the first duet that they sang together in 1960, two decades after Mukesh sang his first song for Nirdosh (1941). Thus, he was quite senior amongst the two with Suman Kalyanpur starting her career in 1954 with Mangu. (Some sites credit Darwaza (1954) as her debut film). However, 1954 was the year she started singing for films.
2 is a fun-filled triad with Mahendra Kapoor. It is to be heard to be enjoyed.
In 3, the gentleman has lost his heart and sings,
aap agar na humpe hanste
kaise baste pyaar ke raste..
4 is a rare sad song of separation and helplessness of the duo. What a composition by S. Mohinder and excellent rendition by both singers to make the song a classic.
5 and 6 are fast paced soft romantic numbers pleasing to the ears.
7 is again a very popular duet. As I can see from the table, it is the only song that they sang for Ravi. This is the only duet of the duo in the film and is arguably the most remembered.
8 and 9 are again very good songs. The respective posts do talk about the two songs from B grade movies with A grade songs.
10 from Dil hi to hai (1963) under Roshan had very good songs, but this duet of the duo stands tall.
11 is to be listened to be admired.
12 is a S D Burman composition. S D Burman engaged Mukesh sparingly, but this duet of the duo ran away with all the popularity in the film in spite of other prominent singers in it. Mukesh’s association with S D Burman can be found here.
13 to 16 are very good songs of the duo.
17 was a very popular song in the Johar series.
18 is atypical chhaya geet song and a wonderful composition by S. N Tripathi.
19 is a Magadhi dialect song represented by self.
20 and 21 are both under the composition of Usha Khanna. The composer in spite of being a good singer engaged other singers depending on the situation and the actors.
22, I had almost missed for inclusion in the list as it is not included in the index in MGK-II. This is amongst the best triads in HFM. Mukesh’s rendition at the end is simply outstanding. One interesting trivia of this song often highlighted by self is the fact that Mukesh never gets to sing the title of the film in the song.
23 is from the baton of Husnlal Bhagatram. In fact it was the last film of the famed composers.
24!,
Yes, I am aware that it is an out and out Mukesh solo. But, in the video in the film, Suman Kalyanpur renders the first stanza in her melodious voice after Mukesh completes his song.
25!, what should I write about this song. The heart flutters wherever we hear it. Undoubtedly, one of the best in all the songs that they sang.
26 is yet to be covered on the blog. In fact, I take up the same for this post.
27 is from Saathi under Naushad Ali and is sung multiple times in the film. There is always a confusion between Lata Mangeshkar’s and Suman Kalyanpur’s voice. But, strangely, this is one of the few songs where there is no confusion. It must be because of its immense popularity that people concluded that the voice belongs to Suman Kalyanpur.
28 is under the composition of Ganesh who was known for creating such melodies.
29 and 30 are again very popular songs under the music composition of Shanker Jaikishan. There are multiple singers in this album, but the duo’s songs stood out.
31 to 35, except 33 are yet to be represented on the blog and again are familiar songs.
33 from Sanyasi (1975) is a rare cabaret song in the voices of the duo.
36 is a NFS of Mukesh with some uncredited female singer. Our Editor with a keen ear to decipher uncredited singers has concluded that the voice is of Suman Kalyanpur and I have taken the liberty of including it in the list to make a perfect three dozen.
I have covered 23 songs of Mukesh with Md. Rafi in this post and 29 songs with Shamshad Begum in this post.
With 36 songs, I suppose, Suman Kalyanpur stands third in terms of numbers after Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosale who have 100+ and 75+ songs with Mukesh respectively.
Today’s duet from Mera Naam Johar (1967) is under Usha Khanna’s composition. It is picturised a a stage song on some unknown actors whom I cannot identify. IS Johar is of course present in the song. Two songs from this film have been posted on the blog and this is the third.
Again, an enjoyable song made even more melodious in the voices of Suman Kalyanpur and Mukesh.

Female dancer is Sonia Sahni, I am sure, and the male dancer may be dance director P.L. Raj himself(male dancer’s identification is based on pure guess work)

Prakash ji,
Thanks for your comment.
Yes, I read about the female dancer somewhere and you are right.
I initially contemplated including the song under my other series Mukesh and his Actors if it were picturised on IS Johar.
Since it was not the case, I took up this song itself for the post.
Regarding identification of cast, you are the best bet.
