Mukesh and his Actors – 08

In one of my recent posts, I made a reference of yesteryear actress, the beautiful Bina Rai.

Today’s post covers Mukesh’s association with her husband.😊

Actor, Director, Producer, Novelist Prem Nath needs no introduction.

Here is his wiki page.

Here is a news article on him, and

Here is a bio-post on our blog.

Skipping his career details which are well covered in the links above, we shall discuss the details of the songs that Mukesh sang for him.

And of course, with my usual digressions. 😊

The first song that Mukesh sang for Prem Nath was for Shanker-Jaikishan’s debut film Barsaat (1949). It is quite ironic that Mukesh, known for his soulful and melancholic voice, is notably attributed to the first cabaret song in Hindi Films.

Thus, the team of Shanker-Jaikishan, Shailendra, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Prem Nath and very deservingly Cuckoo Moray can be credited to the first cabaret song in Indian films.
Of course, there was Madam Azurie the “item dancer” girl with dozens of item songs, but most film historians agree on “Patli Kamar hai” setting the trend for what we today call as cabaret songs.

The second song is a beautiful solo from Aaram (1951) under the composition of Mukesh’s maker Anil Biswas. The song has Dev Anand busy with a paint brush and Prem Nath pouring his heart out on the piano. Madhubala with her enchanting and trademark crooked smile looks stunning. What a beauty of a song in the voice of Mukesh.

Continuing with Prem Nath and Madhubala, Mukesh sang 2 songs in Badal. It is believed that the two actors started a serious relationship through this film, but then eventually Prem Nath went to marry his heroine from his next film. We come to that a bit later.

Badal (1951) has a very good romantic solo with Madhula on a horse and Prem Nath leading the horse. Mukesh excels in this romantic song too. Though the film had very good songs from Lata Mangeshkar, her only duet with Mukesh in the film is clearly the winner.
Duets of the two singers are aplenty. But this one from 1951 is underrated, IMO. A lively song with excellent composition and orchestration, it features the two actors in a playful mood and looks natural to support the rumours of their alleged affair.

In the duet, Mukesh sings

khidki na chhodo khuli
pyaar ke chor hain taak mein
kitnon ki chori huyi
madbhari chaandni raat mein,

On another set, in the same year, for another “thief”; Raj Kapoor in the voice of Mukesh was singing to his beloved,

mai chor hoon kaam hai chori
duniyaa mein hoon badnaam
dil ko churaataa aayaa hoon main
yehi meraa kaam,

In another song of the same film Aawara (1951), Mukesh sang a lesser-known solo ham tujh se muhabbat kar ke sanam.

Why am I referring to this solo?

Well, it had plenty of film names in it including “Badal”. Maybe it was not intentional, but how many film titles can we count.

ye dil jo jalaa ek aag lagi
aansoo jo bahe barsaat huyi
barsaat huyi
baadal ki tarah
baadal ki tarah aawaaraa the ham

Aag, Barsaat, Badal, Awara and not to forget Sanam and Aansoo; half a dozen titles; all in one stanza and all from the almost the same period.

Of ham tujh se muhabbat kar ke sanam, I said lesser known because the title song of Aawara crossed continents to spread its fame and remains undiminished to this day.

Coming to the 5th song in the table, Samunder (1957) had its music scored by Madan Mohan.

Mukesh and Madan Mohan, a combination which could have created many more gems, was restricted to only 9 songs in 26 years. More than a decade back, I had written on this aspect here.

The duet in the table is again a lovely romantic duet with Lata Mangeshkar with the real-life husband-wife playing the on-screen roles. In the mid-fifties, Prem Nath produced and directed a few films with Bina Rai in prominent roles.
Samunder (1957) had very good Lata solos. One of them is a personal favourite of mine.
In the genre of “yearning for the beloved”, this song stands tall, very tall.
It is,

aaja kahin se aaja
dil ka qaraar leke
baithe huye hain kab se
tera intezaar leke,

Lata Mangeshkar’s rendition is unhurried, and Madan Mohan’s composition during the sea-battle scenes of Prem Nath is hurried. In all it delivers a classic song of more than 6 minutes and was recorded on both sides of the disc.

I request readers to relish the greatness of this song whose blog-link is given above.

6 and 8 are probably transition songs of Prem Nath from hero to that of playing character roles, villain etc. In both the songs, he is teasing himself to be crazy.

7 is again a gem of a duet with Asha Bhosale. Early next year, I shall come up with the duo’s collaboration as their songs remain underrated but there are dozens of great duets. Long time back, I had this two-cassette pack of the duo and I remember playing them forever. We are all used to Lata-Mukesh duets, but the ones with Asha Bhosale ought to be known more.

9 and 10 are with Geeta Roy, again a very good combination of singers, but unfortunately for me all their songs seem to be covered on the blog. I am expecting Gajendra ji to pull a rabbit out of the hat and help me find some rare, unreleased songs of the duo which some people say exist somewhere. A case in point is “Us chand se pyare chand ho tum” which was first recorded by the duo and then by Lata-Rafi for the film Raat ki Raani (1949). The latter version was eventually retained in the movie.

I warned readers in the beginning of the post that I will be wandering here and there. 😊
Moving ahead, 11 and 13 are relatively lesser-known songs. I was surprised to see my own humorous comment to song 13 on the blog. 😊

12 is being taken up in this post.

And 14 is a Qawwali which was represented by yours truly on the blog.

There is one more duet featuring Prem Nath which I covered under Mukesh and his Actors – 04, featuring the dashing Feroz Khan. But then, Mukesh sings for Feroz Khan and Kishore Kumar for Prem Nath. As such it is not included in the table above.

Coming to the today’s post and the last one of the duo to be onboard on the blog, it is a duet with Asha Bhosale. I am not so sure, but I feel even this song was famous during those days. I am surprised it remained unposted till now.

The film is Chattan Singh (1974) with two songs already posted on the blog and this is the third song to be featured.

With this, I come to the end of this post and may take a hiatus (as if I am a regular on the blog 😊) to prepare Mukesh-Asha Bhosale collaboration which will be a long table of 75+ songs.

I am sure the songs of Mukesh for Prem Nath are quite enjoyable and readers will love to see and hear them on the same page here.

Good to know about the songs rendered by Mukesh on Premnath. Interestingly, Mukesh sang two different types of songs for Raj Kapoor and Premnath in the same film ,Barsaat.
