Hullo Atuldom

This post is thanks to the reminder that came from an Atulite (on Whatsapp), that today would have been the 100th birthday of Omkar Prasad Nayyar better known as O.P.Nayyar to the film- music- loving public.

O.P. Nayyar was born in Lahore, which is now in Pakistan, on 16th January 1926 as one among four sons. According to information on the internet, all his brothers are doctors. He was married to Saroj Nayyar who was a stage dancer when she met OPN who was at that time a singer at Lahore Radio Station. The Nayyars are parents to three daughters and a son. One of his granddaughters or grand niece, Niharica Raizada an actress, was born in Luxembourg, was seen in the Rohit Shetty directed ‘Sooryavanshi’ in 2021 & ‘Total Dhamaal’ (2018) a Inder Kumar directed film.

O P Nayyar was active in the film world from 1949 when he gave the background score for ‘Kaneez’. Dalsukh Pancholi’s ‘Aasman’ (1952) was his first as music director. ‘Zid’ (1994) directed by Esmayeel Shroff was the last film with OPN’s music.

In between 1952 & 1994 (almost 42 years) OPN’s music was heard in 73 Hindi movies (according to this post by Atulji.
That post also gives the number of O.P. Nayyar songs yet to be posted as 97. Since then (2018) we have added 37 more songs i.e. around 60 filmy songs are yet to be posted.

On going through the filmography, I found that the 1952 released, P.L. Santoshi directed & Ramniklal N. Shah produced “Chham Chhama Chham” is 2 short of YYIIPPEEEEhood.

The last song to be posted from “Chham Chhama Chham” was in 2015. The last 2 songs to be posted seem to be “lost” as of now. Let us hope for finding them at some point, some collector may be kind enough to upload them on video sharing platforms.

I was unable to find any typical OP Nayyar song from his heyday so I reluctantly settled for a song from “Zid”(1994) which was his swansong. But sadly that song lacked the characteristic OPN touch i.e. no ‘horse hoofs’ sound, no Punjabi rhythm that we OPN fans are used to hearing. So I contacted Atul jee and expressed my dilemma. He informed me that the last two songs of “Chham Chhama Chham”(1952) seem to be unavailable. He informed me that “Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujaala”(1958) and “Kalpana”(1960) were the earliest O P Nayyar movies whose songs could be available. So I requested him to pick a suitable song for this post.

Remembering OP Nayyar, who made music which never had Lata Mangeshkar’s voice in any of his albums. Read the following somewhere on the internet

“Contrary to popular perception, it was never due to any animosity between the two. In an interview, Lata Mangeshkar clarified, that she and O.P. Nayyar had no problem whatsoever. Nayyar believed that despite Lata being an excellent singer, his style could be better rendered by Asha Bhonsle or Geeta Dutt. Lata confirmed further that she agreed with that view. This goes well with the fact that her song Saari Saari Raat Teri Yaad Satayein was used by Nayyar Saheb.”

Editor’s note
As many as 55 O P Nayyar movies have already been YIPPEED in the blog. The earliest unYIPPEED O P Nayyar movies in the blog are “Chham Chhama Chham”(1952)(9 songs covered out of 11), “Shrimati 420″(1956) (8 songs covered out of 9),”Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujaala”(1958)(7 songs covered out of 9) and “Kalpana”(1960) (6 songs covered out of 10). “Kalpana”(1960) is a movie whose songs are readily available and these songs are typical O P Nayyar songs.

So here is an archtypical O P Nayyar composition from “Kalpana”(1960). This song is sung by O P Nayyar’s favourite singer duo of Asha Bhonsle and Mohammad Rafi. The song is picturised as a stage performance song on Padmini and a male actor who could be Sohan Lal (the choreographer of the song). The hall is full of spectators, with Ashok Kumar seated on the front row.

Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist.

Lyrics of the song and the details of the picturisation were sent by Prakashchandra(long ago).
