‘Agar Tum Na Hote’ (1983) was produced by Rajeev Kumar and Vimal Kumar and was directed by Lekh Tandon. The cast included Rajesh Khanna, Rekha, Raj Babbar, Madan Puri, Asrani, Baby Shabana, Sudhir Dalvi, Yunus Parvez, Sundar, Dulari, Ranvir Raj, Gulshan Bawra etc. In this film, Rekha had a double role, first as Rajesh Khanna’s wife who dies after the delivery of a baby girl and second as a governess for Rajesh Khanna’s daughter. For Rajesh Khanna, it was one of his ‘comeback’ films released in 1983, the other two films being ‘Avtaar’ (1983) and ‘Sautan’ (1983).

The story of the film is as under:

Ashok Mehra is an industrialist who is happily married to Meena (Rekha). Shortly after delivering a baby girl, Meena dies from the post-delivery complications. Ashok is devasted and in his grief, he has lost interest in the day-to-day activities of his industries. Shakur uncle (Madan Puri) advises Ashok to come out of the grief as he has to take care of his infant daughter. Gradually, normalcy returns in Ashok’s life. His daughter, Mini (Baby Shanana) has started going to school and a governess has been appointed to look after her.

For marketing his industry’s new cosmetic product, Ashok appoints a well-known photographer, Bedi (Raj Babbar) for the publicity campaign of the product. Bedi goes in search of a model for the campaign and identify Radha, a girl from the orphanage and convinces her to become a model for him in his publicity campaign. After a series of shoots, Bedi and Radha falls in love and get married. Now Bedi does not want Radha to appear on the publicity campaign. So, he wriggles out of Ashok’s publicity campaign by saying that the campaign materials have got damaged. Chandu (Asrani), Raj’s assistant does not like his boss’ attitude. There is some heated arguments after which Bedi dismisses him from the job.

Angry with Bedi, Chandu meets Ashok and reveals him the truth that Bedi has married his model and now he does not want her to appear on the publicity campaign. Ashok demands compensation from Bedi for the breach of contract. Bedi sells his house and pays back the compensation money to Ashok. He shifts to a smaller house and looks for a job. During the photo shooting of his new assignment, he accidentally falls from the crane and is hospitalised. He recovers but with his legs getting paralysed, Bedi has been confined to a wheelchair. Radha has no option but to look for a job for herself to take care of the family as well as for the treatment of Bedi.

Mini’s governess is fed-up with her tantrums and leaves the job. Ashok gives an advertisement in the newspaper for new governess with a condition that the governess should be unmarried. Looking at the attractive salary, Radha applies for the job without revealing her marital status. She gets the job but Ashok is astonished to see Radha having almost the same resemblance as his late wife, Meena.

After some initial adjustment with Mini’s tantrums, Radha nicely gels with her. Ashok is happy with his new governess handling Mini. Mini always talks about her mother and expects her that one day she will come back to her. Radha tells her the truth that her mother is dead and she can never return to her again. Over a period of time, Mini treats Radha as her mother. On some occasions, Ashok takes Mini for outings on the beach and restaurant for lunch during which Radha accompanies them.

When Chandu comes to know about the accidents of his former boss, Bedi, he goes to his house during which he comes to know that Radha has started working and Bedi is alone in the house. He promises him that he will occasionally give him the company. During this period, he tries to create suspicion in the mind of Bedi about Radha by gossiping about her work. On Mini’s birthday party, Radha wants to take leave to celebrate the wedding anniversary with Bedi which falls on the same day. But Mini insists that she will not join her birthday party without Radha being present. So, Radha attends Mini’s birthday party during which Mini announces Radha as her mother putting Radha in an awkward position. Since it is late in the night, after the party, Ashok decides to drop Radha to her house in his car during which he proposes to her with a ring which she leaves in his car without responding.

On the same day, Chandu reveals to Bedi that Radha has been working with Ashok. He also show him a photograph published in a magazine where she is seen with Ashok as Miss Radha. Bedi suspects that Radha has been cheating him to enjoy a life of comfort in Ashok’s house. Bedi waits for Radha to return home to confront with her. While dropping Radha to her house, Ashok overhears the confrontation between Radha and Bedi making him to wait for some time during which he comes to know for the first time that Radha is married to Bedi. He tries to remove the misunderstanding of Bedi about him but in vain because he thinks that Ashok has deliberately employed Radha in her house to take a revenge on him due to abandoning his product campaign. To cut their arguments short, Radha orders Ashok to leave the house as he has no right to interfere in their personal matters. Ashok is shocked by her respeonse.

A heart-broken Ashok returns home and he does not know how to face Mini who has already started believing Radha to be her mother. With a confused mind, Ashok admits her in boarding school. As the days pass, Ashok thinks maturely that it is the circumstances which made Radha to conceal her marital status and he had proposed her without knowing this fact. His thinking toward Radha and Bedi cools down. One day, Ashok send Rs.5 lakhs through Shakur uncle to Radha in the guise of winning the lottery, the ticket of which was bought by Shakur and Radha jointly. With this money, Radha plans Bedi’s treatment in the USA. They reach the airport to catch the flight where Ashok is waiting for them. He offers a cigarette to Bedi when he sees a photo of Meena embodied in his cigarette case. Ashok makes it clear to Bedi that the photo is not that of Radha but that of his wife, Meena, who is no more. With this, the misunderstanding of Bedi about Ashok and Radha is removed.

The film ends with Radha and Bedi in the flight when they find Mini is also travelling in the same flight. Ashok has sent her because she cannot live without Radha.

I had not watched this film when it was released in 1983. I had watched most of Rajesh Khanna’s films of 60s and 70s. He had a charismatic presence in his films with his typical mannerism, soft but impactful dialogue delivery and the expressive eyes. By the end of the 1970s, I had reached a saturation point in watching his style of acting. It is only recently that I had to watch this film because I had picked up a song from the film for the article.

I was pleasantly surprised by Rajesh Khanna’s powerful performance as a grieving husband and the father of a mother-less child without his usual mannerism and the typical expressions. Instead, he delivered more subtle, matured and believable performance which made me to sit through the entire film in one go. Generally, I do not like to watch the films with melodrama, but this was one of the rare films which I ‘enjoyed’ watching melodrama mainly because of Rajesh Khanna’s performance for which Rekha also extended her support by giving one of her best performances. I am now inclined to watch a few more films of Rajesh Khanna which I have not watched when they were released.

Of course, the overall credit for making this film interesting to watch goes to its director, Lekh Tandon. Recently, I have watched online some of his films and I can say that he is the master in handling films with high emotional and melodramatic contents. Lastly, the title song in four versions composed by R D Burman and rendered by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar also contributed for the box office success of the film.

The film had eight songs (including four versions of one song) written by Gulshan Bawra which were set to music by R D Burman. Seven songs (including four versions of one song) have been represented on the Blog. I present the 8th and the last song, ‘ham to hai chhui mui ib kaa karen’ which is rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. In the beginning, the song is picturised on an unidentified actress in the background of the puppet show when Rekha and Rajesh Khanna are present. In the later part of the song, Rajesh Khanna imagines that instead of puppet, Rekha is singing and dancing and his conscious tells him as if she is complaining about his gaze to her.

Incidentally, I have come across of the use of the word, ‘ib’ (ab or now) in the lyrics after a long time, the earliest one being in the song, sun bairi balam sach bol re ib kyaa hogaa from ‘Baawre Nain (1950).

With this song, all the songs of ‘Agar Tum Na Hote’ (1983) have been represented on the Blog.

Editor’s note:This movie had made its debut on 7 August 2008 (20th day of the blog). The movie gets YIPPEED on 17 January 2026 (6392nd day of the blog). Thus this movie “Agar Tum Na Hote”(1983) becomes the movie that took the longest duration (6373 days) to get YIPPEED in the blog.
