Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 84

Today, 20th January 2026 is the 21st death anniversary of one of the most glamorous actress of the 70s and early 80s – Parveen Babi.

Parveen Babi was an iconic Indian actress and model who became one of the most successful and highest-paid stars in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and early 1980s. She was celebrated for her westernized fashion sense and glamorous screen presence, which broke traditional stereotypes of the era.

Born on April 4, 1954 in Junagadh, Gujarat, into the noble Babi Dynasty. She attended St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Her academic background was considered quite prestigious for a film actress at the time.

She began her career as a model in 1971 while still in college. Her striking westernized looks quickly caught the attention of film producers.

Parveen Babi’s career spanned roughly 13 years (1973–1986), during which she appeared in over 70 films. She made her acting debut in the film Charitra (1973) opposite cricketer Salim Durani. Her rise to stardom began with Majboor (1974) and was solidified by her role in the blockbuster Deewaar (1975).

She was often contrasted with her contemporary Zeenat Aman for bringing a modern, bohemian, and glamorous image to Indian cinema. She broke stereotypes by portraying independent, working women who were not bound by traditional Indian cinematic tropes.

In 1976, she became the first Indian film star to be featured on the cover of the Asia edition of Time magazine.

Parveen Babi remained unmarried throughout her life. She was known for her relationships with Danny Denzongpa, Kabir Bedi, and Mahesh Bhatt.

Her later career and personal life were deeply impacted by health issues. She was believed to have been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, which led to her retreating from the public eye in the mid-1980s. She officially retired from the film industry in the late 1980s, with her final film, Irada, released in 1991.

After leaving films, she pursued an interest in interior design and professional decorating starting around 1983. She also spent time on a spiritual journey with philosopher U.G. Krishnamurti.

She passed away on 20th of January 2005, at the age of 50.

As a tribute to this style icon, I am presenting a song from her movie “Raksha” (1981). The song is “Jaani O Dilbar Jaani” and is sung by Asha Bhosle. It is penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Rahul Dev Burman.

“Raksha” is produced by P Mallikarjun Rao under the banner of Bharati International, and is directed by Ravi Nagaich. The star cast includes Jeetendra, Parveen Babi, Ranjeet, Paintal, Prem Chopra, Iftekhar, Sajjan, Sunder, Rajendra Nath, Viju Khote, Narendra Nath, Suresh Oberoi, Polson, Prem Bedi, Birbal, Gorilla, Manik Irani, Goga Kapoor and Praveen Kumar, with guest appearances by Moushumi Chatterjee, Satyen Kappu, and Agha.

This song is lip synced and performed by Parveen Babi. We can see Jeetendra and some junior artist playing a villain’s henchman whom I’m unable to name. Maybe our in house knowledge house, Prakashchandra Ji is able to identify him.
