‘Doosri Dulhan’ (1983) was produced by Dharampal Gupta and was directed by Lekh Tandon who also wrote screenplay and dialogues. The cast included Sharmila Tagore, Victor Bannerjee, Shabana Azmi, Sudhir, T P Jain, Shahid Khan, Sudhir Dalvi, Leela Mishra, Nitin Sethi, Paro and Master Manish etc. Madan Puri made a guest appearance in the film. The film was based on a play written by a well-known Marathi playwright and journalist, Anil Barve.

Probably, this is the first Hindi film in which the main theme is the surrogacy at a time when there were no law enacted on surrogacy in India. In the film, Shabana Azmi is in the role of a prostitute who agrees to become a surrogate mother for a childless couple, Victor Banerjee and Sharmila Tagore. The film was much ahead of the time as in India, commercial surrogacy was legalised only in 2002. Of course, with the passing of Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021, the commercial surrogacy is prohibited. The Act restricts the eligibility to only married couples and allows only altruistic surrogacy.

The story of the film is as under:

Anil (Victor Banerjee) and Renu (Sharmila Tagore) are happily married and are expecting their first child. While traveling, their car meets with an accident. Both gets injured in the accident but Renu is admitted in the hospital because of her pregnancy. The doctor informs Anil that his wife had miscarriage due to accident and she will not be able to bear any child in future. Anil is devasted but consoles himself that Renu is well and on her way to recovery. After discharge from the hospital, Renu is in a depressed mood as she is fond of children. She even suggests Anil to get married to another woman and she has no problem in living together. But Anil flatly refuses to marry another girl. She suggests to adopt a child but Anil is not comfortable with the idea as his sister had a bad experience with adopting a child.

One day, Renu reads an article on a magazine about test tube baby. But Anil rejects the suggestion that it would become a publicly known that the child was born from test tube which would affect the child when he grows up. After few days, Renu suggests to Anil as to why not hire a woman’s womb for a year for which she would be paid handsomely. Anil is shocked and admonishes her as to how this type of suggestion comes from a woman. She retorts by saying that she is not only a woman but has a feeling of a mother. After all these episodes, Renu goes into depression, sometime in hallucination of having a child.

Watching Renu in such a desperate situation, Anil agrees to have his child with another woman. Renu lays down the condition that the woman he selects should be money minded. If a woman can sell her body for a night, it should not be problem for that woman to lend her body for a year or so. Anil selects a prostitute Chanda (Shabana Azmi) after ensuring from his conversation with her that she is more interested in money as relationship in her business does not count for her. Renu has already decided to shift to a bungalow in a hill station far away from the city so that this arrangement remains secret.

The relationship between Anil and Chanda develop into hostility because of her crude behaviour and also his reluctance to have a physical relationship with her. Renu becomes a balancing factor between them. One day, while strolling outside the bungalow, Chanda falls in a lake. Anil jumps and saves her from drowning. After this incident, there is some change in her attitude as also in Anil. Chanda gets pregnant and Renu is elated. As per the contract, Anil gives Chanda the second instalments of agreed money. However, she gives back to Renu by telling that she will take it when she leaves the house.

After the news of pregnancy, there is visible softness in the behaviour of Chanda. She thinks herself more as an expecting mother than a prostitute. She calls Renu as Didi. She expects Anil to be on her side. Whenever he visits her room, she becomes happy and in joyous mood. Anil becomes now more closer to Chanda than hitherto. Although Renu is somewhat uncomfortable to both becoming closer, on a second thought, she thinks that it is good for an expectant mother. In due course of time, Chanda gives birth to a baby boy.

The feeling of motherhood brings significant changes in Chanda’s attitude. She tells Renu that henceforward, she will take care of her child because she is the mother. She refuses to accept from Anil the last instalment of money as per her contract as she regards accepting money akin to selling her child. She decides to leave the house with her child without accepting the money. Anil reminds her of contract and does not allow her to take the child. She pleads with Renu to understand her feelings as a mother. Renu tells Anil to allow Chanda to take the child as she has no one except her child. For Renu, she has her husband with her.

Chanda goes back to her paramour’s (Sudhir) with the intention of living with him but he refuses to accept her as his wife and lend his name as the father of her child. He insults her by telling that a mistress can not be his wife. After some thoughts in her mind, she returns to Renu’s bungalow and hands over the child to Renu by telling that he has a better future than with her. Anil and Renu offer her to stay with them permanently but she refuses as she feels that her presence will create more problem for her child. With this, she leaves the house without disclosing her destination.

The film has started with Renu and Anil’s sons getting married as credit titles roll. The film ends with the newly married couple accompanied by Anil and Renu visiting a temple and seeking the blessing of a sannyasin who happens to be Chanda.

The film was a box office failure despite the sleek direction of Lekh Tandon and excellent performances of Shabana Azmi, Sharmila Tagore and Victor Banerjee around whom the film’s story revolved. For the majority of audience, the subject of surrogate motherhood was unimaginable at that time. Probably, Lekh Tandon took this subject much ahead of time. Since I have watched the film very recently, I felt that Lekh Tandon has nicely handled the sensitive subject of surrogacy which looks realistic at the current juncture. He has kept the enitre focus on the theme without making too much melodramatic. By doing so, he had raised certain timely issues concerning surrogacy – commercial exploitation, legal issues, emotional and psychological impact on all the childless couple and the surrogate mother. Some of these issues have been taken care of in the recently passed Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021.

After the release of ‘Doosri Dulhan’ (1983), few more Hindi films were made on the subject of surrogate motherhood. The film includes Vinod Pande’s ‘Ek Naya Rishta’ (1988), Abbas-Mastan’s ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ (2001), Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Filhaal’ (2002), ‘Mimi’ (2023) and some more.

The film had five songs (including one song each in double version and triple version) written by Amit Khanna (3), Narendra Sharma (1) and Mahendra Dehlvi (1) which were set to music by Bappi Lahiri. One song has been represented on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘ye kis bandhan mein uljhaayaa hai tune’ rendered by Bhupinder Singh on the words of Mahendra Dehlvi.

The context of the song is that after his wife, Renu (Sharmila Tagore) insists that her husband, Anil (Victor Banerjee) should hire a woman who is ready to become a surrogate mother for his child. Much against his will and taking into account Renu’s mental health, he hires a prostitute, Chanda (Shabana Azmi) to become a surrogate mother. After negotiation, Anil has brought Chanda to a different bungalow where he, Chanda and Renu will stay until Chanda delivers his baby. On the eve of his very first night with Chanda, Anil is caught in his life’s difficult situation in which he does not want to get involved but at the same time he cannot give up because of his wife’s mental health condition. The song spells out his dilemma.

Lyrics:

ye kis bandhan mein
uljhaayaa hai toone
zindagee mujhko
jo toda bhee naheen jaataa
nibhaayaa bhee naheen jaataa
ye kis bandhan mein
uljhaayaa hai toone
zindagee mujhko
jo toda bhee naheen jaataa
nibhaayaa bhee naheen jaataa
ye kis bandhan mein

jo kehta thhaa muhabbat mein
wafaa kaa devta ho jaa
tajjub hai wahee kehta hai
jaa mujhse bewafaa ho jaa
magar ae bewafaa mujhse
bhulaayaa bhee naheen jaataa
ye kis bandhan mein
uljhaayaa hai toone
zindagee mujhko
jo toda bhee naheen jaataa
nibhaayaa bhee naheen jaataa
ye kis bandhan mein
uljhaayaa hai toone

ye uljhan ye pareshaanee
ye majbooree khuda taubaa
mere saaqee ne mujhko de diyaa hai
jaam kuchh aisa
jo chhodaa bhee naheen jaataa
uthhaayaa bhee naheen jaataa
ye kis bandhan mein
uljhaayaa hai toone
zindagee mujhko
jo toda bhee naheen jaataa
nibhaayaa bhee naheen jaataa
ye kis bandhan mein
uljhaayaa hai toone
zindagee mujhko
zindagee mujhko
