‘Galiyon Kaa Baadshah’ (1990) was produced and directed by Sher Jung Singh under the banner of Ayodhya Films. The film’s multi-star cast comprised of Raj Kumar, Hema Malini, Smita Patil, Mithun Chakraborty, Poonam Dillon, Dr Sriram Lagoo, Ranjeet, Danny Denzongpa, Iftekhar, Parikshit Sahni, Aruna Irani, Om Shivpuri, Kiran Vairale, Dev Kumar, Leela Mishra, Jankidas, C S Dubey, Master Raju, Baby Gazala etc. In the film, there were cameo roles of Helen, Bharat Bhushan and Amrita Singh whose names did not appear on the credit titles. The film belongs to action-thriller genre.
The film went into production sometime in early 1980s. The film’s shooting and the dubbing were completed sometime in 1986. As per the Censor Certificate, the film was certified by the Censor Board on March 23, 1990. It is stated that due to some legal issues, the film did not get the theatrical release but was released on VHS tape sometime in 1990. Incidentally, the film’s producer-director, Sher Jeng Singh is the brother-in-law of Dharmendra (his sister’s husband) who had earlier produced ‘Satyakam’ (1969) and had directed ‘Habari’ (1978).
Since the film was considerably delayed, the final product by way of a VHS tape appears hotch-potch at many places, I have given only the gist of the story of the film which is as under:
Ram (Raj Kumar) lives a discreet life like a wealthy man in Mumbai. His wealth comes as part of his share of executing dacoity, breaking safe and other loots on behalf of a syndicate run by Rani Sahiba (Aruna Irani) with Vinod (Om Shivpuri) and her henchman, Tiger (Ranjeet). Ram distributes his share of loots to the poor in a slum pocket discreetly where he stays as Raja. He works as a manual labourer in a nearby flour mill. Sometimes, he gives the money to needy like school, orphanage etc disguising as sadhu, priest etc. In other words, Raja is a modern-day Robin Hood. He has admirers in the slum pocket which include Sikander (Mithun Chakraborty), Billo (Hema Malini) and Tulsi (Smita Patil). Sikander’s dream is to become a film actor. Tulsi is a prostitute while Billo loves Raja and dreams of living with him in a modest house.
The police is baffled by a series of dacoity and they are not able to identify any suspect. A police team is formed under Police Inspector, Vijay (Danny Denzongpa) and he is informally assisted by London-returned crime investigation journalist, Madhu (Poonam Dhillon) who is the daughter of Vinod. In one instance of a theft, Madhu identifies a person whom the police suspects the man could be either Raja or Ram as the person has a close resemblance with them. Madhu develops friendship with Ram to investigate whether he is the man suspected of carrying dacoity. In due course of time, she also suspects that Ram and Raja are the same person but neither Inspector Vijay nor Madhu has the proof or the circumstantial evidences. When Vinod comes to know that his daughter is investigating the crime and she suspects Ram, he tells her not to get involved in the crime reporting journalism as it would affect her mental peace.
Billo has been constantly pestering Raja that they need to shift to a modest house to settle down in their life. Raja decides to take up the last assignment of dacoity on behalf of Rani Sahiba of picking up a box of precious gems from the safe of Rana (Parikshit Sahni). So, Raja starts digging the tunnel to reach to the safe when he hears that Rana has decided to donate the proceeds from selling his precious gems for the benefits of poor and farmers because he feels that his forefathers have got the wealth by exploiting them. After hearing this news, he abandons the dacoity and returns to his slum pocket. He shows the railway tickets to Billo to travel to their village and settle down there. This is not liked by Rani Sahiba and she orders kidnapping Billo to force Raja to commit dacoity. Tulsi, who has gone to one of her henchmen listens to their conversations and rushes to inform Raja in advance.
In the meantime, Billo is kidnapped and has been confined in one of the rooms of Rani Sahiba. Raja goes in search of her during which he meets Tulsi on the way who is followed by the henchmen of Rani Sahiba. She gets killed but before that she tells the whereabouts of Billo. Sikander also rushes to Rana’s Bungalow where he fights with Rani Sahiba’s henchmen and retrieves the box of precious gems. Raja also joins Sikander and both of them eliminate Rani Sahiba’s syndicate. The films ends with Inspector Vijay arresting Raja by telling him that he may have acted like Robin Hood but still it is a crime to commit dacoity.
The film had six songs (including one triple-version song) written by Indeewar (3), Maya Govind (2) and Anjaan (1) which were set to music by Kalyanji-Anandji, I present the first song, ‘kyaa kahoon kyaa na kahoon’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Yesudas and Sadhana Sargam which is picturised on Raj Kumar and Poonam Dhillon, respectively. The song is written by Indeewar. The feature of this song is that there is no interlude music.
The context of the song is that Poonam Dhillon is a crime journalist who is investigating the dacoity in the city and she has been informally assisting police inspector Danny Denzongpa. She suspects that Ram and Raja (double roles of Raj Kumar) are the same person who is involved in dacoity. In between, Poonam Dhillon’s diamond necklace has been stolen from her house. Again, Poonam Dhillon suspects it could be the handiwork of either Raja or Ram. When Ram comes to know that the necklace was a gift for Poonam Dhillon on her birthday party, he goes to her house and gives the necklace to Poonam Dhillon by introducing himself as Ram and explains to her that the thief who had stolen the necklace from her house was running around his premises and probably it may have fallen from his hand there. But with this explanation, her suspicion that Ram may be involved in the dacoity becomes stronger. So, she pretends to develop as if she has fallen in love with him to probe further whether Ram and Raja are the same person. In that process, she invites Ram for her birthday party during which she sings and dances with him so that she can get checked whether Raja is present in his slum pocket at that point of time. The lyrics of song are self-explanatory through which Raj Kumar indicates to Poonam Dhillon that it is her futile to fall in love with him.

Lyrics:
kyaa kahoon
kyaa na kahoon
mere din se poochho
meree raat se puchho
kuchh naheen
kuchh bhee naheen
chaand se suraj se
gardish mein saiyaaron se
itnaa hee kah
mujh se mohabbat kee haiae
tum na jaano
kitne sawaalon se ghiraa hoon
main na jaanoon
kitne khayaalon se bharaa hoon
kuchh naheen
kuchh bhee naheen
itnaa hee kah
mujh se mohabbat kee hai ae
zindagee kee doriyaan
bandhi kahaan kahaan
kaun kaise toot jaaye
jaane kyaa jahaan
dil mein mere saikadon tanhaaiyaan chhupeen
ajnabee
ajnabee chaahne waalon se ghiraa hoon
kuchh naheen
kuchh bhee naheen
itnaa hee kah
mujh se mohabbat kee hai ae
uljhee huyee dor se
bandho na zindagee
khelna sholon se naheen koi dillagee
kahne ko to honthhon pe
aab-e-haayat hai
duniyaa ke liye
duniyaa ke liye
zahar ke pyaalon se bharaa hoon
tum na jaano
kitne sawaalon se ghiraa hoon
chaand se
suraj se
gardish mein saiyyaaron se
itnaa hee kah
mujh se mohabbat kee hai ae
kyaa kahoon
kyaa na kahoon
mere din se poochho
meree raat se poochho
