Hullo Atuldom
It has been four years today, to the date to be exact, since the lovers of Indian music lost their beloved Lata Mangeshkar. When I say Indian music I mean Bhav-geet, Film Sangeet, Bhajans and any other genres that we can think of. Lata Didi, as she was addressed by the multitude of her followers, was the go-to voice (a modern day term for first choice) of all music composers across generations. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was the that one heard on waking up through the various bhajans played in the morning hours. If the listener was a fan of Hindi film songs then it would be any song from ‘jyothi kalash chhalke’, ‘jaago mohan pyaare’, almost all the songs of Raj Kapoor’s ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (if one is of the newer generation) or any of the numerous bhajans that exist in the non-film category.
There is nothing that I write will be ‘new knowledge’ to readers of the blog or followers of Indian film music or Indian music, as a whole. Everyone knows that Lata Mangeshkar was considered the ‘Nightingale of India’ and was a conferred the Bharat Ratna by the Government of India in 2001, the highest civilian award in India. Lata Didi was the Dadasaheb Phalke winner in 1989. She had won four Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards. She was later awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993 and Filmfare Special Awards in 1994 and 2004. This is all common knowledge.
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan had once said “kambakht, kabhi besuri na hoti” (“[she] is never off-key”). Actor Dilip Kumar once commented, “Lata Mangeshkar ki awaaz kudrat ki takhleek ka ek karishma hain”, meaning “Lata Mangeshkar’s voice is a miracle from God”.
I am a nobody to comment or write in detail about this legend. So, we shall go directly to a song sung by her in 1977 for J. OM Prakash’s “Apnaapan”. The film had six songs with ‘Aadmi musaafir hai’ being a two-version song. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Sulakshana Pandit, Mohd. Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Anuradha Paudwal, Dilraj Kaur, giving their voices to songs penned by Anand Bakshi & composed by Laxmi-Pyare.
The cast was headed by Reena Roy- Sulakshna Pandit- Jeetendra with Sanjeev Kumar in a special or guest appearance (don’t recall what was in the titles of the film). Sudhir Dalvi, Sunder, Birbal, Master Bittoo, Aruna Irani, Iftekhar, Raj Mehra, Pinchoo Kapoor, Sunil Dhawan, Baby Sonia, Nivedita, etc. formed the supporting cast.
A word about Nivedita:- she was Nivedita Joshi when played a young girl singing ‘aadmi musaafir hai’ in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice in a bus. She must have been 13 or 14 then. She went on to marry Marathi actor/ comedian Ashok Saraf to become Nivedita Saraf.
“Apnaapan” was a ‘drama’ genre film which had a rather regressive (in the eyes of people of the current generation) story. It highlighted the fact that a lady should not be modern and ambitious. The story which was written by Kishore Sahu (discovered it today), glorified the lady who gives up her job to look after her husband’s child from his first marriage. I have seen the film a number of times, but now I feel the cringe when I see it in this age and times.
| Song | Date of post |
|---|---|
| Aadmi musaafir hai | 1 January 2009 |
| Dil par zara haath rakh lo baabu | 24 January 2014 |
| Somvaar ko hum miley mangalvaar ko nain | 14 May 2023 |
From the above we see that the film made its debut in 2009. This is another of the slow-moving film. Here is the next one which has Jeetendra & Sulakshana Pandit singing in Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar’s voices during their honeymoon in picturesque Kashmir. Master Bittoo joins them halfway through the song.
The location seems to be the same as the one where ‘jai jai shiv shankar’ (Aap Ki Kasam) or ‘yahan wahan saare jahan mein tera raj hai’ (Aan Milo Sajna) were shot. Seems to have been J. Om Prakash’s favourite outdoor location. I am sure we will find more J Om Prakash songs in this location

Lyrics
o o o o
aa aa aa
o o o o o
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
tere dil mein jagah milee
swarg hamen kya karna hai
kya karna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
tere dil mein jagah milee
swarg hamen kya karna hai
kya karna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
chhoona chaaho to
baadal ko chhoo lo
apne haathon se
arre dil na behlaao
sajna oonche
mehlon kee baaton se
un galiyon kee baat karo
jin galiyon se
gujarna hai ae
gujarna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
dekho main sab dekh rahee hoon
meree aankhen band naheen
dekho main sab dekh rahee hoon
meree aankhen band naheen
dhoondh rahe ho swarg mein pariyaan
kya main tumhen pasand naheen
pariyaan dil behlaane ko hain
pyaar tumhee se
karna hai ae
karna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
tere dil mein jagah milee
swarg hamen kya karna hai
kya karna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
saath khade hokar hum donon
aao koi duaa maangen
saath khade hokar hum donon
aao koi duaa maange
haath diya jab haath mein tere
haath uthha kar kya maangen
darte thhe bhagwaan se pehle
ab preetam se darna hai ae
darna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
tere dil mein jagah milee
swarg hamen kya karna hai
kya karna hai
is duniya mein jeena hai
is duniya mein marna hai
