Blog Day :

6452 Post No. : 20035

Hullo Atuldom

At the outset I would like to wish the blog & the Brain behind the blog on completion of 20000 posts, with this special post by Sudhirji. It was a song from 1931 film, just like the song with post number 10000.

I clearly remember the wait for the post number 10000, it was the rainy season of 2014 – July 20th, 2014 to be precise; a day after the blog’s sthapana diwas.

Congratulations to Atulji, Sudhirji, and the brigade of contributors led by our In-House Encyclopedia – Sri. Arunkumar Deshmukhji (whose personal score stands at 1823 at the time of writing this post). Having this many posts which give details about the films, artists, background of the particular song with accurate lyrics and accompanying video is no small feat. What began as Atulji’s effort to bring good songs onto the worldwide web (or cyberspace) with accurate lyrics has turned into a library/ a reference point for seekers.

Congratulations once again to the blog & atulites and I feel great that I am a part of it.

I may be the last of the regulars of Atuldom to read the post as I was away on a tour, just like on 20th July, 2014; but I will say I was also eagerly waiting to see what would be the song with the special post. It was all the more special because it brought our Sudhirji back on to the blog. Hope he keeps giving us more.

It was just apt that the next post-post number 20001 was by Guruji a.k.a Sri. Arunkumar Deshmukhji. This one had all the trademark of a post from Encyclopediaji meaning it was highly informative.

The juggernaut of the blog has moved forward with encyclopediaji himself contributing six more posts after post number 20001 & the total number of blog posts standing at 20034. That means I am late by 34 posts to wish Atulji, better late than never. I also see many songs that I have liked over the years have featured in these 34 posts.

18th March happens to be the birth anniversary of the Cute, Charming Gentleman Shashi Kapoor- the youngest brother of Raj Kapoor, youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor, chacha to Randhir, Rishi, Rajiv (sons of Raj Kapoor); Jatin Sial (son of Shashi Kapoor’s sister). The other niece & nephews, not prominent in the entertainment industry, were Aditya Raj & Kanchan (children of Shammi Kapoor), Ritu & Rima (daughters of Raj Kapoor) etc. Shashi Kapoor’s own children are in the entertainment industry in various capacities having started their careers as actors. The latest from Shashi kapoor’s family to make his debut in films is his grandson Zahan Prithviraj Kapoor. He is the son of Kunal Kapoor & Sheena Sippy who incidentally is the daughter of director Ramesh Sippy, Zahan Kapoor made his debut in 2023.

Shashi Kapoor had a career that started in 1947/48 approximately at the age of 10 and lasted till 1998 when he appeared in ‘Jinnah’, ‘Side Streets’ (I don’t think these were ‘Made In India’ film). One of the films that he had acted in the late 1980s, with Shabana Azmi as co actor, found a release last month on Zee TV.

Shashi Kapoor had acted in many multi hero films during his time, some of them being with his nephews Randhir & Rishi Kapoor. We shall remember the charming actor with a song from the film “Heeralal Pannalal” where he acted alongside Randhir Kapoor. If I recall correctly, they played orphans who become friends in the orphanage. Zeenat Aman and Neetu Singh were the ladies they wooed. Premnath, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Ajit, Ranjeet, Ramesh Deo, Murad, Asrani etc played important supporting characters. R.D. Burman was the music director for songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri & Verma Malik. Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Bhupinder Singh, Hemant Kumar & RD Burman lent their voices for the six songs of which the following are on the blog:-

Song Date of post
Kisne dekha hai kal 27 July 2012
Aaja mere pyaar aaja 21 November 2012
O padosan ki ladki 18 March 2016
Kahiye kahaan se aana hua 19 November 2019

As can be seen from the above the film made its debut on the blog with the Pancham- Asha Bhonsle duet on the occasion of Amjad Khans’ birthday. The next song was posted for Premnath’s birthday was the second version of the first song posted. It was treated as two posts as the lyrics were different and RD had given entirely different look to them. the third came on the blog for Shashi Kapoor’s birthday in 2016 and the fourth one was for Zeenat’s birthday in 2019. I had suggested in my post, in 2019, that we should rename this movie as Birthday Special. Whatsay?

In the debut post of this film Atulji had made an interesting observation, about the film:

The movie was predominantly a light hearted movie. That included depicting policemen as comedians. That landed the producer of this movie in trouble with the censors who ordered that the movie needed to carry a disclaimer at the beginning of the movie. The disclaimer was perhaps the funniest part of the movie. It read :

We have been informed that the portrayal of the police in the film is completely unrealistc and does not properly emphasise the important role that they play in ensuring peaceful conditions and security for the community. We deeply regret the wrong portrayal which is due to our over-enthusiasm and we offer our profound apologies to the police forces of the country for the misrepresentation of their role. We also take this opportunity of reiterating the respect that not only we but every member of the society has for our police forces for the noble cause they serve in protecting life and property.

Here is the song, the lyrics of which was almost on the lines of songs from ‘Aandhi’ (Salaam kijiye) and ‘Namak Haram’ (woh jhootha hain vote na usko dena). I was particularly in love with the “Bata ki dukaan mein bhi aata milega”
