‘The Killers’ (1969) with its alternative title ‘Ham Sab Qaatil Hain’ (1969) was produced by A V Mohan under the banner of Sangam Pictures and was directed by Maruti. The cast included Dara Singh, Ajit, Sheikh Mukhtar, Helen, Paul Sharma, Amar, Kundan, Bela Bose, S K Prem, Leela Chitnis, Maruti etc.

The surprise element in the film was the unusual role of Dara Singh as a secret agent, something like the role of Jeetendra in ‘Farz’ (1967). Probably, the success of ‘Farz’ (1967) may have inspired director, Maruti to develop the character of Dara Singh on that line. For the first time, I have watched Dara Singh in immaculate western attire and dancing with girls. But he is no ‘jumping jack’ like Jeetendra. Ajit had a double role in this film.

I had covered the story of the film in details while discussing the song, mere dil zindagee safar hai. So, I give below the condensed version of the story:

Police Commissioner (Paul Sharma) is disturbed by a spate of murders, the victims being the loyalists of the disposed king of Vijaygarh. One more loyalist, Professor Ghosh (Amar) is on his way to Mumbai. Upon reaching Mumbai airport, Professor Ghosh collapses. A passerby, Vikram Singh (Sheikh Mukhtar) comes to his rescue and gets him admitted to a hospital. But in reality, Vikram Singh has kidnapped Professor Ghosh to get from him a letter of secret treasure of the ex-king of Vijaygarh. However, Professor Ghosh says that he has given that letter to his son, Ajay Ghosh (Ajit).

In Vikram Singh’s den, Shimpy (Ajit), a look alike of Ajay gets a new assignment from Vikram Singh to get the secret letter from Ajay Ghosh. He goes to Ajay’s house and in a scuffle, Shimpy accidentally gets seriously injured. Before his death, he reveals to Ajay that he had come to collect the secret letter. Ajay decides to become Shimpy, being his look alike, to reach Vikram Singh which will lead him to his father’s whereabout.

The Police Commissioner decides to assign the investigation of a series of murders to CID officer, Rajesh Verma (Dara Singh) who is holidaying in Delhi. Rajesh reaches the Police Commissioner’s office in Mumbai after successfully fighting with Vikram Singh’s henchmen during his journey from the airport. Both Rajesh and Vikram Singh assume that the secret letter may be with Ajay’s fiancée, Savita (Savita). Before Rajesh could secure Savita, Vikram Singh’s henchmen abducts Savita to Vijaygarh by making Rajesh unconscious. Rajesh, after regaining consciousness, finds the letter which he reads containing details of the secret which have been stored in an form of a note in an idol kept in a museum in Vijaygarh. Rajesh travels to Vijaygarh in a train in which Shimpy (disguising as Ajay) and Kitty (Helen) also travels to follow Rajesh. Kitty becomes friendly with Rajesh.

Next day, Rajesh goes to the museum in search of an idol in which the secret letter of Professor Ghosh is kept. He gets hold of the letter but it contains some cryptic message, ‘killer’. He gets to know from the taxi driver that an earlier passenger has visited Champa Bai’s house to get some information on a secret treasure of ex-king of Vijaygarh. Rajesh decides to meet Champa Bai (Lalita Kumari) who reveals him that secret is lying in a talisman of her son, Ranjit who works in a circus owned by Vikram Singh. Rajesh rushes to the circus and is surprised to find Kitty. Rajesh takes her into his confidence and she gives him whereabout of Ranjit. At the same time, she cautions him that Vikram Singh and his men would recognise him. So, she suggests him to become a circus artist. A circus show is going on which Kitty gives her dance performance along with circus artists which includes Rajesh in the guise of a joker. The audience includes Vikram Singh and his henchmen.

So far, Rajesh has got the information about the secret treasure in a piecemeal basis. It is only Professor Ghosh who would be able to solve this puzzle by joining its loose ends. For that Rajesh would need to meet Professor Ghosh who is presently in the custody of Vikram Singh. Rajesh himself arranges to get abducted by Shimpy who puts him in the prison where Professor Ghosh is also locked up.

Next day, Vikram Singh, Shimpy and Professor Ghosh visit the ruined palace to meet the mystery caller, ‘The Killer’. Kitty gets Rajesh freed from the prison who goes to the ruined palace. The mystery caller tells Vikram Singh to send Professor Ghosh to him to get the stone idol opened where the secret lies. Rajesh reaches the ruined palace and during the fight, Shimpy, now Ajay joins Rajesh and together they eliminate Vikram Singh and ‘The Killer’. Ajay unites with his father, professor Ghosh and Kitty joins Rajesh for a happy ending.

The film had six songs penned by S H Bihari (4) and Aziz Kashmiri (2) which were set to music by O P Nayyar. Two songs have been covered in the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye’ sung by Asha Bhosle on the words of Aziz Kashmiri. The song is picturised on Bela Bose around a swimming pool where CID Agent, Rajesh (Dara Singh) is relaxing after a swim. The song also gives the impression that some lines are being sung in chorus along with Asha Bhosle. But I do not see lip syncing by other girls. Or could it be some kind of echo effect?

The context of the song is that CID Agent Rajesh (Dara Singh) is holidaying in Delhi and a group of girls led by Bela Bose has surrounded him near the swimming pool. He is trying to ward them off by spraying. But instead, Bela Bose responds by singing the song. The inspiration of this scene seems to be one of James Bond films in which the girls planted by rival are trying to seduce James Bond.

There appears to be some goof-up in the scene of the song. Dara Singh is supposed to be holidaying in Delhi. After the end of the song, he gets a telephone call from his boss to reach Mumbai by first available flight. But the picturisation of the song is apparently done in around the swimming pool of ‘Sun-n-Sand’ Hotel in Juhu Beach, Mumbai.

Lyrics:

churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye
churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye
ke zinda hain bas aap hee ke liye
churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye
ke zinda hain bas aap hee ke liye
churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye

agar beqaraaree na hotee
haaye
ye haalat hamaaree na hotee ee
agar beqaraaree na hotee
haaye
ye haalat hamaaree na hotee ee
lutaate na dil ko khushee se
jo marzee tumhaaree na hotee ee ee
suno haal-e-dil to khuda ke liye
ke zinda hain bas aap hee ke liye
churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye

nasheelee nigaahon ke sadke ae
muhabbat kee raahon pe qurbaan aan
nasheelee nigaahon ke sadke ae
muhabbat kee raahon pe qurbaan
dil kaa aana gunaah hai
to aise gunaahon pe qurbaa aa aan
bahakne lage hain kadam bin piye
ke zinda hain bas aap hee ke liye
churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye

bahut hamne chaahat chupaayee
haaye
lagee dil kee kadmon mein laayee ee
bahut hamne chaahat chupaayee
haaye
lagee dil kee kadmon mein laayee ee
mite ham to khush hai zamaana
lute ham to chup hai khudaai ee ee
lute lut ke phir bhee na shiqwe kiye
ke zinda hain bas aap hee ke liye
churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye
ke zinda hain bas aap hee ke liye
churaate ho nazren ajee kis liye
