‘Mere Armaan Mere Sapne’ (1963) was produced and directed by Arabind Sen under his banner, Lalit Kala Mandir. The cast included Pradip Kumar, Kumari Naaz, Ashim Kumar, Jayshree Gadkar, Pran, Agha, Sumitra Devi, Manmohan Krishna, Asit Sen, Badri Prasad, Johnny Whisky, Padma Devi, Paro Devi, Samar Chatterjee, Laxmi Chhaya, Madhumati, Surekha etc.

A feature of the film is that there is no lead actress. Pradip Kumar is paired with Jayshree Gadkar with whom he is in love while in college in Mumbai. However, the family commitments takes him back to his village leaving behind her in Mumbai. Jayshree gets married to Abhi Bhattacharya. Ashim Kumar is paired with Naaz and they are to get married after he completes his college in Mumbai. However, he gets involved with a high society girl, Sumitra Devi who is murdered by Pran. Finally, Ashim Kumar gets married to Naaz while Pradip Kumar remains unmarried.

The gist of film’s story is as under:

Kumar (Pradeep Kumar) lives a in a village in India along with his parents (Padma Devi and Badri Prasad) and a younger brother, Arun (Asheem Kumar). Kumar goes to Mumbai for higher studies and falls in love with a wealthy Prabha (Jayshree Gadkar), whose father approves of him and is willing to finance his education abroad.

Arun on the other hand is not good at studies. Instead, he gets romantically linked to Shanti (Naaz) the daughter of his neighbour, Neelu (Manmohan Krishan) who is agreeable to get her daughter married to Arun. Shanti (Naaz) is keen that Arun studies well. Because of Shanti, Arun makes affords and passes high school examination with good marks. Before the marriage of Kumar with Prabha takes place, Kumar’s father (Badri Prasad) passes away. The responsibility of running the household falls on Kumar. Leaving behind Prabha, Kumar returns to the village so that Arun can go to Mumbai, study, and make a better life for the entire family. He sends Arun to Mumbai for higher studies.

In Mumbai, Arun meets a high society girl, Kalpana (Sumitra Devi) through Kumar’s college friend, Vilas (Agha). Kalpana, once upon a time was a good girl. However, after she comes into contact with Pran (Pran), she turns into a high society girl. Arun’s growing relationship with Kalpana gets leaked to Kumar in the village through a common friend, Jageshwar (Asit Sen). Kumar is extremely agitated and he decides to visit Mumbai to bring him back to the village.

In Mumbai, Kalpana has decided to get married to Arun to settle down. But this is vetoed by Pran because his income will be affected. Kalpana knowing full well that Arun comes from a good family, now decides not to go ahead with the marriage to avoid putting Arun’s life at risk by Pran. As a result, she does not want to continue her relationship with him and asks him to leave her house. Exactly at that time, Kumar reaches Kalpana’s house from the clue he gets from Vilas and finds Arun holding the gun to kill Kalpana and himself. However, a gunshot is heard which kills Kalpana. Kumar thinks that the bullet was fired from Arun’s gun. He takes the gun from his hand and escapes from the house with Arun to directly reach his village. He witnesses the marriage of Arun with Shanti after which the police team which has already reached the village arrests Kumar on charge of murdering Kalpana.

In the trial court, public prosecutor, Mathur (Abhi Bhattacharya) is pitted against Kumar. It turns out that Prabha is now married to public prosecutor, Mathur. She strongly believes that Kumar is innocent as she knew him from their college days. But Mathur says that the circumstantial evidences and the motive have been established. Kalpana’s maid servant has already told in the witness box that Kumar was holding the gun when she entered the house. Vilas has also corroborated that when Kumar met him he told him that it was his duty to save Arun from Kalpana. Moreover, Kumar himself has admitted that he has killed Kalpana. The trail judge pronounces the death sentence by hanging.

However, Prabha pressurises her husband Mathur who is also the friend of Pran to look for his role who was known to Kalpana. After further investigation in Pran’s house, a photo frame of Kalpana along with a gun from which only one bullet was fired are found. It was also confirmed that the gun held by Arun/Kumar was not loaded with bullet. Pran is arrested and Kumar is released. Both go back to thier village.

The film had seven songs written by Rajendra Krishan which were set to music by N Datta. Five songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 6th song, ‘dheere dheere bol mere paayal ke ghunghroo’ rendered by Asha Bhosle which is picturised on Kumari Naaz. The context of the song is that the love between Arun (Asheem Kumar) and Shanti (Naaz) is blossoming and Shanti is in a pleasant mood which is reflected in the song.

The sound track version of the song has three antaras while the record version have only two antaras.

Satish ji,

You are correct in pointing out that the tune and composition of the song reminding of some familiarity. I could not recall any particular song while while writing the article. I can now only recognise the familiar rhythemic beats in the antara part of the songs matching with the song ‘jaa ri jaa ri o kaari badariya’ from ‘Azaad’ (1955).
