‘Sarhadi Lutera’ (1966) was produced and directed by S M Sagar. The cast included Shaikh Mukhtar, Saleem Khan, Sunita (debutant), Anwar Hussain, Meenakshi, Sham Kumar, Jagdeep, Kundan, Kumud Tripathi, Shahid Bijnori, Johny Whiskey, Helen, Madhumati, Jeevankala etc. The film belongs to the genre of action/stunt.
This is the film on the sets of which Saleem Khan decided not to pursue his acting career. He had met Javed Akhtar on the sets of this film who was a clapper boy. Later, in the same film, he assisted S M Sagar in dialogue writing.
Only one copy of the VCD of the film is available on video sharing platforms with the duration of only 01:27:00 which indicates the VCD is heavily edited probably due to some damages to VHS tapes. In this film, Shekh Mukhtar and Anwar Husaain have the main roles while Saleem Khan and Sunita are romantic pair. The story of the film on the basis of the condensed VCD of the film is as under:
Shahbaz (Sheikh Mukhtar) is a loyal soldier of the kingdom. Behram (Anwar Hussain), the Vazir of the kingdom is a traitor who kills the king and the queen and wants to kill the minor Prince Murad. But Shahbaz arrives in time and saves the Prince by escaping with him in a deep forest. Shahbaz takes an oath to eliminate Bahram for his tyrannical rule. Behram has been given an impression by his soldiers that Shahbaz and the prince have been killed.
Shahbaz turns a bandit and gradually gains power by looting royal treasures and caravans. With the looted money, Shahbaz expands his group of bandits with weapons. He becomes known as Sarhadi Lootera. His only aim is to fight against the tyranny of Behram. Subsequently, Behram comes to know that both Shahbaz and the Prince are alive and the Sarhadi Lootera is none other than Shahbaz. He sends Bakhtawar (Khursheed Khan) with his soldiers to kill them but they fail on each occasion.
In the meanwhile, Behram has invited Sultan Siyahposh (Kundan) and his daughter Salma (Sunita) to his palace with the intention of marrying his son, Akram (Jagdeep) and ultimately, taking over the administration of both the kingdoms in his hands. During their night stay in the forest on their way to the palace, Princes Salma goes for strolling where a grown-up Prince Murad (Saleem Khan) saves her from a bandit, Dilawar (Sham Kumar) of his own gang. Later, when she was returning to her camp, Murad saves her from the wild elephants. In their very first meeting, Murad and Salma fall in love with each other. Later, Princess Salma often goes to the forest to meet Prince Murad on some pretext or other with a couple of songs expressing their love for each other.
In one of Salma’s visit to the forest, Murad decides to drop her at the palace gate without the knowledge of Shahbaz and also without realising that his life will be in danger, if Behram recognises him as the Prince. Shahbaz follows at once in disguise to warn Murad. However, when both Shahbaz and Murad are inside the palace, Behram gets to know their true identities. He traps both of them by inviting them along with Princess Salma and Sultan Siyahposh for a dance performance . However, both Shahbaz and Murad escape from the palace. Princess Salma refuses to marry Akram. Sultan Siyahposh is imprisoned and tortured by Behram forcing Princess Salma to agree to marry Akram.
Shahbaz and Murad gather their forces and depart to the palace in disguise – Shahbaz as the brother of Sultan Siyahposh and rest of them in burkhas and enter the palace where the marriage of Salma with Akram is about to start. Shahbaz’s burkha-clad forces close all the doors of the main palace so that Behram’s soldiers cannot enter the palace. A sword fight between Shahbaz and Behram results in latter being killed. Sultan Siyahposh is set free. Sunita unites with Murad and Shahbaz has fulfilled his oath to kill Behram and install Prince Murad as the king.
The film had six songs written by M A Taj which were set to music by Iqbal Quereshi. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘aisee qaatil adaa aisaa zaalim shabaab’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and picturised on Helen as a dance song. The dance is witnessed by Anwar Hussain, Saleem Khan, Sunita, Sheikh Mukhtar (in disguise), Jagdeep among others.
The context of the song is that Murad (Saleem Khan) has accompanied Princes Salma (Sunita) to drop her at the palace. When Shahbaz (Sheikh Mukhtar) come to know about it, he rushes toward the palace disguising himself as Baba and joins Murad in the palace to take him out of the palace. Behram gets to know from one of his soldiers the true identities of both of them. He decides to trap them by inviting them to a dance performance in his palace by a dancer (Helen). After the dance performance, both Shahbaz and Murad are trapped but eventually escape from the palace.
The second antara in the video clip is not included in the audio clip. However, video clip of the song ends abruptly without completing the last stanza which is available in the audio clip. So, the lyrics have been jotted down using both video and audio song for its completeness.
