There are iconic songs in the Hindi film songs, and then there is this song (film ‘Railway Platform’ – 1955). Really. For my generation of Hindi film music fans, this is the iconic one. Like one comment in the blog post says “Vividh Bharati song, Is geet ko koi bhi sachcha listner kaise bhool sakta hai….ek ek shabd, ek ek piece sangeet ka, dil, aur dimaag ke andar record kiya hua hai. Mujhe yaad hai aise bahut log hain JINHONE apni zindagi men PEHLA Hindi geet YE GEET suna, aur Hindi geeton ke deewaane ho gaye. AAJ TAK WOH DEEWANE HAIN.”

Today’s song is from an old film-Billi-1938.
Sometimes, when I have some free time, I just go through the “Talkie Films’ Index”, a book by Hamraz ji and look for odd or comic film titles. I can assure you that one can spend few hours in this process. One gets surprised to see the creativity of the filmmakers in giving titles to their films. In general, the title is expected to reflect the type of the film concerned e.g. ‘Ghar ek Mandir’ clearly indicates that it must be a family drama film or ” Hum sab chor hain” can indicate an entertaining hilarious movie. However, many times the title does not have any far-fetched connection with the story, like the films ” Silky-1984″, ” Rihilla-2007″ or ” Oh, my God-2008″ and 2012″. What would you understand about these films ? Can you guess its type or even the Genre ?

Today’s song is from the film Apna Ghar-1942.
This film was the remake of the Marathi film “आपले घर ” (Aaple Ghar i.e. Our Home). Very surprisingly, it was made in both languages by Circo Production, a film company famous for making Hindi films. Usually, the bilingual-Marathi/Hindi films were made in Poona and Kolhapur by either Shantaram’s Prabhat Films or Master Vinayak’s Huns Pictures at Kolhapur. But then, the owner of the CIRCO (Cine Industries Recording COmpany), Chimanlal Trivedi was a person exclusive in the industry.He produced films taking the best from the industry- actors, directors or the music directors. He floated 5 successful film companies and one stage drama company. He had close relations with the top political leaders of India. After his death, his entire family settled in the USA. Today’s song is from a film which is almost 90 years old – 300 Days and after-1938.
1938 was an interesting year in the early life of the Talkie films. The film making studios had firm footing with a studio system and they tried a variety of subjects in their films. In the 88 Hindi films produced in 1938, one finds almost every Genre of film subjects, except perhaps the usual Folk stories and Historical themes. Comedy, Tragedy, Fiction, Jungle stories, Costume, Socials, Musicals, Mythologicals, you name it and you had it. Content and technical expertise had improved as films on famous novels were made.

Today’s song is from a very old film-Bramhachari-1938.
When this film was released in 1938, it created a sensation, because the film’s debutante Heroine, Meenakshi Shirodkar had sung a song in a swimming pool donning only a one piece Swimsuit ! 85 years ago it was a very very daring and shameful act which would ‘spoil the young and the innocent’ children. The Traditional puritan society could not tolerate it. The film was made in Marathi and Hindi. When the Marathi version was released in Maharashtra, the ‘Sanatani’ section of the society of Poona protested by having an agitation in front of the theatre. Long articles criticizing this appeared in local papers and some people even threatened to go to the court, if these scenes were not removed from the film immediately. Conversely, these scenes also attracted huge crowds who enjoyed such scenes on the screen for the first time in a Marathi film !
