Today’s song is from the film Service Limited-1939.
It was a Sagar Movietone presentation, directed by C.M.Luhar. Music was by Anupam ghatak – a famous and popular Bengali composer. The cast of the film consisted of Surendra, Maya Banerjee, Bibbo, Yakub, Harish, Kalyani, Zia Sarhadi, Bhudo Advani, Kanhaiyalal and his brother Sankatha Prasad and other Sagar regular artists.
Film Service limited-1939 was a Social cum Crime cum Mystery cum Comedy film. After the initial enthusiasm of making Mythologicals and Parsi Theatre type costume dramas, film makers of the late 30s started trying to present films based on imported themes or comedy films. While films were made on works of authors like Agatha Christie etc, there were directors who tried their hands on offbeat entertaining themes.

This song post marks the 100th song of actor-singer Surendra in the blog as a singer.
Today’s song is from an 86 year old film Service Limited-1939.
The film was made by Sagar Movietone, which was on the peak of its existence from where it was soon to fall down. If one falls down from the first floor, the injuries are not fatal and soon he returns to normal life but falling from the 20th floor, the life becomes unrestorable ! In 1939, Sagar had made 7 films, 5 of which became successful. Unfortunately, this was also the year when the downfall of the company took place. I will not repeat this painful process, which was triggered by the owner Chimanlal Desai’s gambling habit and his bad luck ! It has been discussed here several times. Sagar movietone closed and Chimanlal became a partner in National Studios. Later this too was abandoned by him and a new company- Amar pictures was started.

Today’s song is from the film Comrades-1939.
As per the Dictionary, the meaning of the word “Comrades” is….a person who fights on the same side as you in a war or a person who is a member of the socialist political party as you (read Communists). The story of this film is neither about a war nor about communist party. It is an usual love triangle story of 2 brothers and an orphan beautiful girl. I fail to understand how the film title ” Comrades” fits with this story ! Maybe because the second world war had started, the filmmakers gave this title to this film !!

Today’s song is from a special film from the early era of the Hindi Talkie films – Mahageet-1937.
In 1645, German Mathematician Ethonius Kircher, during his usual work, accidentally found that unmoving pictures, if seen quickly in a chronicled manner could give the feel of movement. He made a box for this and named it ” Kircher Magic Lamp” aka Kitoscope. This is considered as the birth of the idea of the films. Over a period of 250 years, Edison made his first prototype Kinetoscope in 1891. Its improved version was exhibited on 14-4-1894. However, the French Lumier Brothers made a Cinematograph and it was commercially presented on 28-12-1895. By a strange coincidence, it was done in an ” Indian Salon” in the Grand Cafe Hotel in Paris.

Today’s song is a duet from film Uski Tamanna aka Her last desire-39. Have you ever heard about this film ? I have also never known this film. But then, barring a few well known, successful film names, one really does not know any other film names in a specific year. Majority of films are like this only.

Today’s song is from the film Jagirdar-1937. The film was made by Sagar Movietone.
In the first decade after the Talkie Era started, Sagar Movietone was one of the major film making companies in Bombay. The Desai family, along with Dr. Ambalal Patel, were originally in Film Distribution business, but decided to enter the actual film production. Sagar Film Company, which had produced 12 silent films, was converted to Sagar Movietone in 1931, after Desai and Patel joined it.
