I was under the impression that Suraiyya’s singing-acting career was over in 1950s, but she also had a few movies released in 1960s. It is another matter that her best days were behind her by that time.

I have posted three songs from “Shair” (1949) in this blog, but what are three songs from a musical blockbuster movie that had nearly a dozen songs in it ! I need to post the remaining songs from this movie as well which are just as nice to listen to.

“Chaar Din” (1949) is a movie which had Suraiyya and Shyam in lead roles. This movie has music by Shyam Sundar which to me is always an indication that the movie will have some lovely songs in it.

Nukta cheen hai gham e dil

I had not heard this ghazal from “Mirza Ghalib” (1954) earlier, though I had read about it. I heard it for the first time only just now. What a song it is ! The lyrics were written by Ghalib, one of the greatest shayars of Urdu literature, and the movie is of course based on his life. He was long gone by that time, but his poetry has been enlivened by the superb voice of Suraiyya and accompanied by just the right music composed by Ghulam Mohammad. Most people will never read the literary works of poets like Ghalib, but it is songs like this that will make laymen aware of the riches that a poet like Ghalib left behind for us to savour.

“Shama Parwaana” (1954) was a movie that had Suraiyya and Shammi Kapoor in lead roles. This movie had some nice songs that have been largely forgotten by now.

The movie “Dard” (1947) was a movie full of nice songs. The most popular song from this movie was Afsana likh rahi hoon(Dard)(1947),which was sung by Uma Devi (later known as Tuntun).

I thought that Suraiyya’s career as an actor-singer was over in 1950s, but it seems that a few of her movies were released in 1960s as well.
