A few months back, I came across a non-filmy ghazal ‘asser-e-gham ka bhalaa phir kahaan thikaanaa thhaa’ sung by Kamla Jharia, a classical singer of dadra, thumri, ghazals and devotional songs. She was also an actor-singer and a playback singer mainly in 30s and 40s. I loved this ghazal so much that in token of my appreciation, I decided to write an article on this ghazal for which I was collecting background information on it. During this period, I came across another audio clip of the same ghazal on YT, sung by her. But this time, it was accredited to a Hindi film ‘Struggle’ (1936). So I put my plan to write an article on hold until I solved the puzzle of this ghazal being labelled both as non-filmy as well as a filmy ghazal.

“Chandidas” (1934) was a Hindi movie based on the tale of the medieval era Bangla poet who used to write poems on the theme of Radha and Krishna. That way, simplistically, he could be thought of somewhat like a male equivalent of Meera Bai, I suppose.

“Amrit Manthan” (1934) was one of the earliest Hindi talkie movies and easily one of the pioneering movies of its time. It was a Prabhat Films production. It was directed by V Shantaram. The movie had Chandra Mohan, Nalini Tarkhad, Sureshbabu Mane, Varde, Kelkar and Shanta Apte etc in it.

“Chandidas”(1934) was one of the earliest movies in which K L Saigal appeared. In this movie, he sang four songs. Three of them, which are relatively better known and are available on youtube have already been discussed in this blog.

“Chandidas” (1934) is a movie that was produced by Calcutta’s New Theatre. It is one of the earliest Hindi talkie as it came just three years after movies began to talk in India in 1931. This movie is a landmark movie in the annals of Hindi movies because K L Saigal came into prominence for the first time with this movie.
