on:“Chandidas” (1934) was a Hindi movie based on the tale of the medieval era Bangla poet who used to write poems on the theme of Radha and Krishna. That way, simplistically, he could be thought of somewhat like a male equivalent of Meera Bai, I suppose.
“Chandidas” (1934) had K L Saigal and Uma Shashi in lead roles, with Pahadi Sanyal, Nawab, M Ansari, H Siddiqui etc. The movie was directed by Nitin Bose.
This movie had some awesome songs sung by K L Saigal, Uma Shashi and Pahadi Sanyal. Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Here is a fantastic solo song sung by Uma Shashi. What a powerful and crystal clear voice. And one can likewise marvel at the quality of recording in those early days of Hindi talkies.
Agha Hashra Kashmiri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R C Boral.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

In gramophone records for both Columbia and Hindustan, she was credited as Smt. Uma Devi, while Tuntun was just Uma Devi.
She ws married into the respected Deb family of Sovabazar and film acting was not possible any more. After marriage Umashashi left the film world entirely.
The news of her death appeared in the newspapers some days after she passed away because her family did not want any publicity.
