Chaandni raaten – Song No. 16
————————————–

” Ye chand ye sitaare ye raat yaad rakhnaa” from film ” La’al-e-Yaman ” (1956) is the song no. 16 of the series. No songs from this movie are posted in the blog yet, but two songs from the 1933 movie of the same name are presented. This song is written by Kaifi Azmi and composed by AR Qureshi also known as Ustad Allah Rakkha. The recording is not really up to the mark and sounding older than the year of the film. The music is also sounding very period in this qawwali style composition.

THE GENTLEMAN MAESTRO….
————————-

White full shirt, ironed white pyjama, spectacles with big powerful lenses and the trademark white Gandhi Topi… He could easily be mistaken for a ‘Pandharpur Warkari’ (a regular pilgrim to Pandharpur) or a member of a ‘Bhajani Mandali’ or simply a middle class ‘Marathi Manoos’. Such was the appearance of one of Hindi filmdom’s talented, yet not so famous, music maestro VASUDEV GANGARAM BHATKAR or Snehal Bhatkar, as we all know him.

Chandni Raaten : Song No. 4
———————————

chaand aahen bharegaa phool dil thhaam lenge
husn ki baat chali to sab teraa naam lenge

chand phir nikla magar tum na aaye
jalaa phir mera dil karoon kya main haaye

dheere dheere chal chaand gagan mein
kahin dhal na jaaye raat toot na jaayen sapne
arey dheere dheere chal chaand gagan mein

khoya khoya chaand khula aasmaan
aankhon mein saari raat jaayegi
ham ko bhi kaise need aayegi ho oo

Like all listeners of film songs on radio I have arrived here having consumed a staple diet of ‘ chand ‘and ‘ raat ‘ related songs. Such songs are numerous and too many to count. If I wish I can fill whole posts with just referring to these songs. There are also song which have such references in the stanzas like thi evergreen song from ‘ Sangam ‘

I had heard the name of the film ‘Rangeen Raaten’ (1956) for the first time in my friend’s house some time in 1971 where some of us used to assemble for listening to his collections of some rare Hindi film songs. My friend would stack a few 78 RPM gramophone records of rare songs on his Gerrad Record Changer and we would listen to those songs one by one with some discussion on the songs and the films. One of the songs through which I came to know about the film was bahut aasaan hai chilman se lagakar muskuraana.
