“Amar Prem”(1936) was directed by Natwar Shyam for Vishnu Cinetone, Bombay. The movie had Ansuya, Aashiq Hussain, Himmatlal, P R Joshi, Kanta, S Nazir, Anwari, Samson, Fazlu, Mohanlal etc in it.

“Amar Prem” (1948) was directed by N M Kelkar for Natraj Productions. This movie had Raj Kapoor, Alka Rani, Madhubala, Nimbalkar, Madhav Kale etc in it.

When one talks of a Hindi movie called “Amar Prem”, one normally means “Amar Prem” (1971) which was a Rajesh Khanna-Sharmila Tagore movie directed by Shakti samanta. But there was another movie with the same title as far back as in 1948 too.

Atul has just brought to my notice that Kishore Kumar’s birthday falls on 4th August. He wanted me to write up a song on this occasion – how could I possibly refuse? For one, it is for Atul’s blog and therefore an honour to be part of it in any possible way. Secondly, it is for Kishore da – and he’s always been close to my heart too. So there was no second thought – and here I am, typing away furiously on my keyboard.

I have mentioned it already a few times that “Amar Prem” was full of hit songs. In fact I am not aware of any single song from this movie that remained unpopular.

on:Kishore Kumar, regarded as a singer of happy songs, has sung some fantastic sad/ serious songs in his career too. “Amar Prem” in fact had not one, but quite a few serious songs. Anand Bakshi was the lyricist and R D Burman was the music director of this movie.
