PARISTAAN (1944) was produced under the banner of N R Acharya Art and it was directed by Mahesh Kaul. The star cast included Pahadi Sanyal, Anjali Devi, Kamal Zamindar, Ranjeet Kumari, Sunalini Devi, Master Amritlal, Moni Chatterji, Padma Banerjee etc. From the title of the film, probably many people may guess that it was a film belonging to fantasy genre. But it turned out to be a slapstick comedy though the story by Vaju Kotak was not less than a fantasy.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 27

When I got the mp3 clip of “nainan jal bhar aaye preet kiye pachhtaaye” of ‘Samrat Ashok’ (1947) sung by Binapani Mukherjee, I checked the song list for the film in http://www.myswar.com and found out that there was another more or less similarly worded song in the movie attributed to Amirbai Karnataki. I thought that this must be another version of the same song. However, I could not get the audio clip or mp3 clip of Amirbai Karnataki version of the song on YT or any other websites. So I wrote an e-mail to Shri Sudhir Kapur whether he had the required mp3 clip. I was fairly hopeful of getting the same from him since I knew during the Mumbai Gangout meets that he had a very large collections of mp3 clips of songs of Hindi films, especially of 1930s and 1940s. And my assessment was right. Within a few hours of receiving my e-mail request, he sent me the required mp3 clip of Amirbai Karnataki version of the song.

Today (17 march ) is just another day in the calendar as far as most people are concerned. As for me, I remember this day quite clearly. Among 17 march of all the years, the year 2007 is especially vivid in my mind.

The system of borrowed voice (i.e., playback singing) for actors started sometime in 1934 and playback singing was firmly in place in the Hindi film industry by the end of 1940. However, in the 40s, there were some prominent actor-singers Like K L Saigal, Noor Jahan, Suraiya, Shanta Apte, Kanan Devi etc. who continued to sing for themselves. Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Talat Mehmood, Sulkashana Pandit etc who started as playback singers also sang for themselves whenever they acted in some films. GM Durrani who started his filmy career as an actor in the 30s switched over to playback singing and he became one of the most sought after male playback singer in 1940s. All these actor-singers/singer-actors had good voices and therefore one would normally expect them to sing for themselves while acting in films. However, there are cases where a few of such artists had to borrow voices of other playback singers.
