As the title of this post suggests this post is in ‘Remembrance of the great Qawwal – Jani Babu Qawwal.

We are paying a belated tribute to him on his ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ which was on 28th January.

I had in my earlier posts in the series of ‘Qawwalis from the Seventies’ mentioned that I grow up hearing these names for ‘singing Qawwalis’, Jani Babu, Shakila Bano Bhopali, Aziz Nazan and Shankar-Shambhu in my childhood days.

I vaguely remember to have attended one such program with my father when I was a child. And, when I get associated with this blog, I was always eager to read about these artistes. I have a big nostalgia with this ‘mehangaayi maar gayi’ song from ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan-1974’ and the voice of Jani Babu in it (in fact voices of all in this song). During recent years I was looking for detailed information about his biography and career but could not get to know much about him.

Then I came across his Qawwalis uploaded on ‘YouTube’ by a person in Dhamangaon-Amravati (Maharashtra). I was in Kenya then. In fact, I even spoked to this person on phone but could not get much information or details. I also contacted one senior person in the WhatsApp group from Nagpur and he helped me with a brief write-up. About a couple of days back when I was just going through my book collection, I find this book ‘Swaron Ki Yatra’ (Hindi Film Gaayaki ka Safar). When I checked this book, I find a detailed two-page article on Jani Babu Qawwal. Using this information, I am presenting a brief about Jani Babu as given below.

Jani Babu Qawwal was born as Syed Jaan Muhammad at Hinganghat (a big city in District Wardha, near Nagpur Maharashtra). Details of his date of birth are not available so far.

He mastered in singing Qawwalis at a very young age. He started taking lessons in classical music and Qawwalis from Ustad Mohammad Khan Shamshiry when he was seven years old only. After that he came to Jalgaon (Maharashtra) and took lessons in music from Abdul Rehman Kaanchwaale. Later he came to Bombay (now Mumbai).

In those years Qawwalis were played like ‘kirtans’ in social gatherings. Jaani Babu wanted Qawwalis to be more entertaining with easily understandable language for common people. So, he gave Qawwalis a simple texture, and a new dimension to Qawwalis, like Qawwalis on ‘husn aur ishq’, ‘sawaal-jawaab’ etc. Many film personalities showed interest in his works and motivated him in his efforts to make ‘Qawwalis’ more entertaining. He also got a major support from Shakila Bano Bhopali. They jointly entertained people for years together thereafter. Their concerts always run to packed houses and even the tickets for their concerts used to be sold in ‘black’.

Jaani Babu’s first film song, a Qawwali from the movie -‘Jungle Princess’ – came in 1958 with Shakila Bano Bhopali only. It was ‘adaayen teer hain andaaz barchhi bhaale hain’ which was picturized on Jaani Babu and Shakila Bano Bhopali. Playback for Shakila Bano Bhopali was given by Mubarak Begum. This is said to be the first qawwali of ‘men vs. women’ competition and is considered a ‘modern qawwali’ well ahead of its time as it did contain ‘English words’ into its lyrics as well.

After ‘Jungle Princess’ Jaani Babu’s Qawwalis appeared in ‘Behram Daaku-1959’, ‘Aalamaara ki Beti’, ‘Choron Ki Baaraat’, ‘Diler Haseena’ (all from 1960), ‘Black Shadow’ (1961), ‘Magic Box-1963’, ‘Birju Ustaad’(1964), ‘Chaar Darvesh’(1964), ‘Magic Carpet’(1964), ‘Rustom-E-Rome’(1964), ‘Accident’(1965), ‘Black Arrow’(1965), ‘Chhupa Rustom’(1965), ‘Son of Hatimtai’(1965), ‘Sakhi Lootera’(1969), ‘Truck Driver’(1970), ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’(1973),
In the movie ‘Son of Hatimtai’ he sang with Mohd Rafi. His qawwali – from ‘Sakhi Lootera’ (meethhi baaton mein na inki aana kabhi) also became very popular then.

In 1974 his voice was again very well appreciated by all, in the qawwali ‘mehangaayi maar gayi’ (for me this song is pure nostalgia) (it stood at no.1 in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of 1975).
There after Jani Babu’s voice featured in ‘Shankar-Shambhu-1976’, ‘Do Khilaadi-1976’ (raat abhi baaki hai, baat abhi baaki hai’ (again a pure nostalgic song for me), ‘Mandir Masjid-1977’, ‘Do Dilwaale’ (1977), ‘Mastaan Dada’ (1977), ‘Aulia E Islaam-1979’. In ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba-1977’ his voice appeared in the song ‘Saibaba bolo’.

(There must be many more which did not find mentioned above. We need to compile the total list of his songs in HFM. I would be happy to share the list of his songs in HFM in future whenever I get an opportunity for that.)

Jani Babu also took lessons from Shabbir Hussain (Pakistani Ghazal Singer?) in singing Ghazals and he started moulding ghazals into qawwali format which again tells us how innovative he was.

Some of his ghazal-qawwalis like ‘seenaa dhuaan dhuaan hai, ishaare kahaan gaye’ and ‘is tarah gardish e ayyaam se baatein ki hai, kabhi taubaa kabhi jaam se baatein ki hai’ became very popular.

His devotional qawwali ‘aasaar -e -qayaamat’ created new records and its ‘records’ were sold in many thousands.

As a music director he gave music for the movies ‘Noor Mahal-1965’ and ‘Aulia-E-Islaam-1979’.

Jani Babu Qawwal passed away on 28th January’2008.

He will be always remembered for his pioneering works in Qawwali and for giving new dimensions to qawwali singing. Qawwalis which were hitherto restricted to Sufi Saints and to singing in Dargah’ only became popular and reach out to common man because of Jani Babu Qawwal.

In remembrance of Jani Babu Qawwal I am presenting a song from the movie
‘Noor Mahal – 1965’.

“Noor Mahal-1965” was a costume drama movie directed by Naushir Engineer for ‘Ratan Productions, Bombay’.

It had Chitra, Jagdeep, Tiwari, Lalita Desai, Wazeer Muhammad Khan, Madhumati and others.

This movie had six songs written by Saba Afghani (four songs), Aziz Ghazi and Noor Dewasi (one song each).

Music for this movie was composed by Jani Babu Qawwal.

In the singers’ list, for the songs of this movie, HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions the names of Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Suman Kalyanpur, Suresh Rajwanshi, Kamal Barot and Krishna Kalle.

The most well-known song from this movie ‘mere mehboob na jaa, aaj ki raat na jaa’ was posted on the blog on 04.01.2009 and one more song – a qawwali– has been posted from this movie on 14.12.2021. (I was under the impression that the Rafi song from this movie has already been posted by Atul ji, but it seems that we still have to wait or it further 🙂 ).

Today’s song is sung by Manna Dey and lyrics are by Aziz Ghazi. Music is composed by Jani Babu.

In the movie this song happens in the back ground of a stage-act where, I guess, a dance troop is playing a show where they play a typical ‘radha-krishna’ love song.

We can see people watching this play in the movie and some ‘conspiracy’ going on behind the scenes in the movie.
I am unable to identify the actors and actresses performing on this song.

The audio version of this song is longer version. The song picturisation in the movie doesn’t have the first stanza. (I am not aware if the movie video available on internet is an edited one or complete version).

Listening to this composition reminds me of the ‘holi song’ from the movie ‘Navrang-1959’.

Missing Films of 1960s – 110

Coming into the home stretch now. 110 films from 1960s added during this series. Some of them have been so rare that no information even is available about them. Like today’s film – ‘Black Arrow’ from 1965.

Geet Kosh, the major source of all information on Hindi films of those decades, provides us with the following details. The film is produced under the banner of Ameer Productions, Bombay, and is directed by Mehmood. It is not clear whether this is the same person as the comedian Mehmood that we are all so familiar with. The film is listed as a costume drama. The film poster that is available online indicates this film to be of the ‘zorro’ genre – a masked rider wearing a black cape and a black hat and riding a black horse – gives an impression of a zorro clone type film.

The star cast is listed as Hercules, Chandrakala, SK Shyam, Anjum, Funny Walker, Jilani, Hameeda Bano, Sadhana Khote, Khurshid Khan, Nazeer Kashmiri, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, and Jaani Babu qawwaal.

Geet Kosh lists four songs for this film. All the songs are written by Aziz Ghaazi. Now this name, although not new on the blog, does not have any information associated with it. We have four songs by this songwriter on the blog. In the Geet Kosh listings, I could locate 29 songs written him, for 9 films, from 1958 to 1969. Then, in our blog, his name appears again for a film in 1987 – ‘Tarzan And Cobra’. That makes 10 films that are known to have his name connected with. Almost all films that he has written for are stunt and costume drama films, as their names would suggest – ‘Jungle Princess’ (1958), ‘Choron Ki Baraat’ (1960), ‘Diler Haseena’ (1960), ‘Night Bird’ (1961), ‘Black Arrow’ (1965), ‘Noor Mahal’ (1965), ‘Tarzan And Hercules’ (1966), ‘Tarzarn Aur Jaadui Chiraagh’ (1966), ‘Sakhi Lutera’ (1969), and ‘Tarzan And Cobra’ (1987). So far this is all the information that I have been able to locate about this obscure songwriter.

The previous song written by Aziz Ghazi and posted on our blog, is a qawwaali in the voices of Mubarak Begum and Jaani Babu Qawwaal – “Adaayen Teer Hain Andaaz Barchhi Bhaale Hain” from the film ‘Jungle Princess’ (1958). And again today, we have another qawwaali sung by the same singers. As I have been surveying the landscape of 1960s films and songs, I realize that the qawwaali has been a very popular song type used in the films, all the way from mid 1950s to around end 1970s. So much that every third or fourth film, especially if it is a stunt type B/C grade film, contains a qawaali. Many of them are quite obscure, unavailable. And those which are available, are not much heard. Maybe because they belong to obscure films. But the qawwaalis, in themselves, are superb creations that have gone unnoticed and are lost to the listeners. It may be an idea to do another series of such unfamiliar qawwaalis from that era. (Aah. . . plans. . .) 😉

Let’s listen to this ‘nok jhonk’ qawaali, a very obscure and a rare song. This is the only song that is available for this film, in public domain. It appears that other songs were probably not released on gramophone records. Small mercies – that this one long qawwaali is now available.

Given the list of actors, my intuition says that this qawwaali is performed on screen by Shakeela Bano Bhopali, lip syncing for the back ground voice of Mubarak Begum, and Jaani Babu Qawwaal, singing for himself.

Another interesting point that comes to mind, as I listened to an prepare the lyrics. Per our earlier discussions, and Atul ji’s observations, a nok-jhonk type of song always ends in an agreement between the parties. In other words, it takes about three minutes for the jhagda to end and friendship to begin. This being a qawaali, the protagonists are taking longer to make their points. However the agreement is reached, albeit it arrives after six minutes. Oh well, it is a qawwaali after all. 🙂

With well over fourteen thousand plus songs and counting, blog century post is a keenly looked forward to occasion for the blog. It signifies the achievement of yet another century for the blog.

With this song, we achieve one more century for the blog, namely century number 145. In other words, this post is song post number 14500 for the blog.

Under normal circumstances, a century landmark is often the main show in the blog, but this time it finds itself relegated to the status of a sideshow. The blog is completing ten years of its existence in a couple of days from now, and we are all concentrating on that mega event. It is like a grand wedding coming up in a family that everyone is concentrating on and they miss the fact that a kid in the family had just won a seat in a prestigious college. On another day, it would be a grand occasion, but it gets ignored on a occasion like this.

Well, a century is a century, as our respected Sunil Gavaskar never fails to remind us. 🙂 And that is indeed the case. No century comes easy in this blog. This century has been toughgoing. This time duration of 41 days for this century had as many as four dot days including two dot days in a row, which is quite unusual for the blog. A late surge for the last few days, driven by entusiasm for the forthcoming 10th anniversary date sees us clocking a good number of posts (26) in the last six days. It looks like lightening pace by present days standard of the blog, but believe me, it would have regarded as ultra slow in olden days of yore (2011-12) when we averaged 6 to 7 songs in a day and some less enthusiastic music lovers would request us to go slow on our postings. 🙂

Coming to the song, this song, like most blog century songs, richly deserves this honour. This song is a qawwaali. Those music lover who are fans of qawwaali would know what a good qawwaali means. It means a song lasting more than seven or eight minutes and still music lovers not realising how this time flies away. Typical HFM qawwaalis has nok-jhonk between the two genders, where the lead singer of each genders has chorus to lend support to them. The lyrics of these qawwaalis are , to my mind the real stars of this genre of song. The words, word plays, the taunts, the jokes that form part of the qawwaali are hard hitting as well as amusing.

The qawwaali under discussion is from “Jungle Princess”(1958). It is an obscure song from an obscure movie. This movie was directed by A R Zameendaar for Navshakti Films, Bombay. This costume drama (veshbhoosha pradhan film) had Kamran, Shanta Kumari (Neeru), Baburao, Indira, Habeeb, Leela Gupte, Janibabu Qawwaal, Shakila Bano, Fazal, Neelofar, Amina, Sheikh, Funny Walker etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Full details are known only for one song, viz for the song under discussion. Singers of other songs are not known though it is mentioned in HFGK that Mubarak Begam and Jaani Babu qawwaal were the singers in the movie.

Here is this qawwaali for “Jungle Princess”(1958). It is sung by Mubarak Begam and Jaani Babu qawwaal, assisted by female and male chorus. The great lyrics are by Aziz Ghaazi. Music is composed by the duo of Bipin Mehboob.

The song is a forgotten gem. One expects a qawwaali to contain only heavey duty Persian/ Urdu stuff but it is a “modern” qawwaali far ahead of its time (1958) and it contains English words in it as well. 🙂

1958! So this qawwaali was created exactly 60 years ago !

Here is this fantastic qawwaali from “Jungle Princess”(1958) as the 14500th song in the blog. Only the audio of the song is available. Video would have been available had the movie done well like say “Al Hilal”(1958) which had also come in the same year and whose iconic qawwaali had become the 5000th song in the blog back in 2011 !

Only the audio is available and let us be thankful for that. My guess is that this song was picturised on Shaikila Babo Bhopali and Jani Babu Qawwaal.

With this song, “Jungle Princess”(1958) makes its debut in the blog.

This song also serves as a tribute to Mubarak Begam whose remembrance day falls tomorrow (18 july 2018). We will pay our tribute to her tomorrow as well with some more of her great songs. For now, here is this 14500th song in the blog. As always, I thank one and all for their continued support for a decade (it will be a decade two days from now). It had been a reat journey. We had achieved 145 centuries in this one decade. Let us see what the future has in store for us. Just how many more centuries do we have in store and in how many more years. Let us take it one song at a time like how we have done so far and who knows where we may end up with. It has been a great one decade for me as well as the fellow travellers of this musical bandwagon. Let this musical bandwagon continue to roll on and on !

Although into the seventies now, in terms of songs covered in this series, still there is a lot more to cover. Many more films from the 1960s are still waiting for their debut here on our blog.

Today’s film is ‘Sakhi Lutera’ from 1969. As discussed in some earlier post, the word ‘sakhi‘ here is not the Hindi word with the meaning – a lady friend. The word in the film title is an Urdu word that means – generous, munificent, a person who is liberal in giving to others. As you may be already guessing, and rightly so, this film is about the legendary thief Robin Hood, who steals from the rich and distributes to the poor.

In the annals of Hindi films, there are many films made on this legend. There is ‘Sakhi Lutera’ in 1934, then again in 1955 and then this one in 1969. We also have ‘Adventures of Robin Hood’ in 1965 and then ‘Sakhi Robin’ in 1962. There may be more, I have done a quick search to locate these films.

This film is produced under the banner of Shahnaaz Films, Bombay and is directed by Rustom B Irani. The cast of this film is listed as Azad, Tabassum, Hercules, Chandrakala, Sheikh, Jaani Babu, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Ram Raseela, Habeeb, Sushma, Heeru Anand, Heera Sawant, Malik, Eruch Tarapur, Desai, Pintu, Toto, Haroon, Shafi, Daud, and Muhammad Sandow etc.

Geet Kosh lists 6 songs for this film. All songs are written by Aziz Ghaazi and the music is composed by BN Bali (aka Baldev Nath Bali). This song is sung by Krishna Kalle. On screen we see a very young Tabassum singing this song and trying to woo Azaad, who plays the role of Robin Hood. One of the films for which the video is available in public domain.
