Today’s song is from the film Noor Mahal-1965.
from the film title, can you guess who is today’s star of the post in this series ? Difficult to guess correctly. It is not about noorjehan, remember. While I discuss matters about this film and other aspects, you keep guessing about today’s star !
Film Noor Mahal-65 was made by Ratan productions and the film was directed by Nausheer Engineer. This was a Costume film dealing with the age old story of ‘ king, queen, wicked vizier and a lover couple ‘. Possibly this was one of the last such pictures in the late 60’s decade. The trend of films had changed drastically in the 60’s and this type of films had lost its audience now. The director Nausheer Engineer had directed 7 films in his career – all in C grade category. The films were, Inteqam-47, Shamsheerbaaz-53, Carnival queen-55, Diler Daku-57, Circus queen-59, Chini jaadugar-59 and his last film was Noor mahal-1965. There were two earlier films with the same title, one in 1934 and the other in 1954.
An interesting point about today’s film was its Music Director- Jaani Babu Qawwal ( arrangers Sonik-omi). He was born in 1935 at Hinganghat, maharashtra. His real full name was Jaan Mohammed Jani babu. He was known as a good qawwal. He came into films and acted in 9 films, but he sang 40 songs in 30 films. He also tried his hand at being a Music Director. His first attempt was today’s film ” Noor Mahal-1965 ‘. All the 6 songs in this film ( I have heard them all) were very good and 2 qawwalis from this film-including today’s qawwali- became popular. Despite providing good music, he did not get any film as an MD. Maybe because Sonic-Omi had left him. He managed to get two more Muslim religious film somehow – Qoobat E Parwardigaar-78 and Aulia E Islam-79. That was the end of his stint as an MD. His one qawwali ” Mehangai maar gayee” from the film Roti Kapda aur Makan-74 is remembered even today. Jani Babu Qawwal died on 28-1-2008.
The other famous qawwal in films was Shakeela Banu Bhopali. She was multitalented. She acted in 32 films, but sang only 4 songs in 3 films. She too gave music to just 1 film-‘ Maze Le Lo’- 1975. She died on 16-12-2002. These were the only well known qawwals who were active in various film fields.
The cast of the film Noor Mahal-35 was Chitra, Jagdeep, Tiwari, Lalita Desai, W.M.Khan, madhumati and others. One of the cast was Wazir Mohammed Khan aka W.M.khan. He is another interesting person associated with this film. W.M.Khan had the unique honour of being the First ever Male singer in In the Hindi talkie films of india. he had done the role of a Faqir in film ‘ Alam Ara ‘-1931, the first indian Talkie film, in which he had sung a song on screen himself-” de de khuda ke naam pe”. In his 42 years of film career, he acted in 105 films and sang 6 songs in 4 films-namely Alam ara-31, Sair E Paristan-34, Dard E dil-34 and Alam Ara -56. He had also sung, on screen, the famous song ” Aye mere watan ” in the film Kabuliwala-1961.
An Interesting thing about him is that he began his career in Talkie films with ‘Alam Ara’-1931 and ended also with the film Alam Ara-1973. In between, he acted in another version of Alam Ara in 1956, in which he sang the same song from the 1931 film again. But alas, both times, no record was issued on both occasions. Now none of those two films are available to see and enjoy !
Today’s song is sung by Usha Timothy and others. Usha Timothy, born on 8-10-1949, sang only 56 songs in 50 films. Later on she focussed on stage shows and multinational tours with few groups. She had created a stir in the industry by claiming that the famous Patriotic song ” aye mere watan ke logon “, sung famously by Lata Mangeshkar ( and which, reportedly, brought tears to Pandit Nehru’s eyes) was sung by her much earlier than lata, in a stage show conducted by C.Ramchandra himself. This was claimed by her, after the death of C.Ramchandra and could never be corroborated by anyone else. This matter was also discussed fiercely on the RMIM forum some years back.
The story of film Noor mahal-1965 was a concoction of several earlier stunt films. It was woven around a wicked brother, who kills his elder brother-the King. He also tries to kill the queen, the son and a daughter, but some loyal sardar escapes with the children. Cut to 20 years later….The brother now remembers that the king’s children were betrothed to a son and daughter of his friend. He then kills the friends and locks up the son. The daughter , however.
, pretends to love him and marry him. A masked girl rescues the son and they dutifully fall in love, sing songs etc. They are the real betrothed ones. All is well when the brother king is killed and the son becomes the King.
So much for the film. Now we return to our star of the post in this series. This is an actress about whom hardly anybody knows.
In the name of the film Noor Mahal is hidden a name of an actress…NOOR. (short for Noorjahan).
Have you any idea who this actress is ? Yes, she became the wife of comedian Johnny Walker. Born on 21-7-1940, she was the second of the 3 sisters. The eldest was Shakila, then Noor and lastly Nasreen.All 3 sisters joined films, but Shakila was the most famous and had a longer career span than the sisters.
Noor debuted as the child star singing the famous song,” Udan khatole pe ud jaun’ in the film Anmol Ghadi-46. Along with her the other child artist debutant was M.Kabir ( later father of actress Sonam). Then came Dard-47. In both these films, she was credited as Noor Mahal, but after this in all subsequent films, she was billed as Noor only. Noor acted in 16 films. They were Anmol Ghadi-46, Dard-47, khubsurat-52, Baghi-53, Do bigha zameen-53, Laila-54, Noor Mahal-54, khushboo-54, Aarpaar-54 ( singing Main na pyar karungi ), Naukri-54 ( as Kishore kumar’s sister,singing ‘ Chhota sa ghar hoga’ ), Mast Qalandar-55, Shahi chor-55, Sakhi hatim-55, Lutera-55, Heer-56 and Chand ki duniya-59. The last two films got delayed releases.
During the film Aarpaar-54, she acted in a very popular song,’ are na na na Tauba Tauba, main naa pyar karungi”, along with comedian Johnny Walker. Johnny fell in love with her and they got married in 1955. After marriage she stopped taking films anymore. The couple had 3 daughters and 3 sons. All 3 sons studied in the USA, all 3 daughters were married off before Johnny’s retirement from films. She stays in her bungalow, ” Noor Villa ” (as good as Noor Mahal !) in Andheri, Mumbai.
