Baaki kuchh bacha to menhgaayi maar gayi

Posted on: July 24, 2012

People in most fields are always on the look out for the holy grail of their field. In case of Hindi movie making, it is a formula that would succeed at the box office. And interestingly, this success formula keeps changing from time to time. Moreover, not every movie following the same formula succeeds at the box office.

There are some movie makers who create their own formula and that pays them dividends for considerable period of time.

Manoj Kumar’s career as a Hindi movie actor was not looking up in mid 1960s and he had almost made up his mind to leave tinsel town and return back home. It was at this stage that “Shaheed” (1965) happened and it gave his career a new lease of life. Soon thereafter, Manoj Kumar made “Upkaar” (1966) after a chance meeting with the then Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri who requested him to make a movie on Indian village life.

“Upkaar” (1966) turned out to be a landmark movie for Hindi movies as well as for Manoj Kumar. from then onwards, Manoj Kumar hit upon the formula of Patriotic movies where Indian values were espoused. And at the same time, non Indian values were also derided. This formula worked well for the entire 1960s.

In his movies, Manoj Kumar would play an average Indian. That way, Manoj Kumar played a role similar to cartoonist R K Laxman’s ordinary Indian. While R K Laxman’s ordinary Indian was unnamed, Manoj Kumar playing an ordinary Indian was always named as Bharat.

“Roti Kapda Aur Makaan” (1974) was one of the biggest hits of Manoj Kumar’s career. In this movie he highlighted the thee basic necessities of life for average Indians. This idea caught the imagination of the movie goers and the movie became a big success.

Four decades later, when I look back at this movie, I realise some interesting facts. The most interesting fact that emerges is that the most burning issue facing Indians at that time was rising prices (Menhgaayi). General elections were won and lost on this issue. Parliament would discuss this issue and prime minister would give assurances about bringing down “menhgaayi”.

And what are the most burning issues facing Indians today ? Though “menhgaayi” is still there, but few people talk about it or bother about it. People now have far graver issues to tackle, namely issues of militancy and terrorism. Indians lived in far simmpler times in 1970s. Rising prices were their major concern. Most people in fact had not heard about words like militancy and terrorism at that time. I know for sure that these terms did not figure in the print and electronic media of those days. It was from 1980s onwards that these problems came to the fore and “menhgaayi” ceased to be the major burning issue for Indians.

Today (24 july) is the birthday of Manoj Kumar. On this occasion, here is this song from “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan” (1974). This song gave vent to the feelings of the average Indians of that time. No wonder, this song became quuite popular with people.

This song is sung by several singers, viz Jani Babu Qawwaal, Lata, Mukesh, Narendra Chanchal and chorus. The song is picturised on Jani Babu Qawwal, Mausami Chatterji, Manoj Kumar, Premnath etc.

Verma Malik has come up with the wonderful lyrics of this song. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.
