“Golmaal” was a light hearted movie, and I doubt that its songs were planned to be of anything more than timepass nature. But trust the Gulzar-R D Burman combination to take their jobs so seriously that they came up with this song in a timepass situation which went on to become an evergreen composition. In fact, for a long time, I used to wonder why people take this song so seriously. Finally I have shrugged my shoulders and reconciled myself to the fact that this song must be treated as a serious classic song.

In olden days, when one listened to songs on Radio, the listeners would need to have all the knowledge about a song, in case they wanted to send their farmaish for a song.
