In my last article on the Blog, I had discussed the film, ‘Birbal My Brother’ (1973) with a Hindustani classical bandish, ‘rang raliyaan karat sautan ke sang’, rendered by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Jasraj as jugalbandi in Raag Malkauns. In this article, I am presenting the same bandish rendered in Raag Malkauns by Asha Bhosle as a ‘filmy song’ without much of ornamentations. This one was from the film, ‘Khwaahish’ (2003) which was produced by Vivek Nayak under the banner of Perry Pictures and was directed by the debutant Govind Menon. The cast included Himanshu Malik, Mallika Sherawat, Shivaji Satam, Amrita Sathbai, Shahbaz Khan, Mahamud Babai etc. This was Mallika Sherawat’s first film in a lead role. The film was based on an English novel, ‘Love Story’ (1970) by Eric Segal, customised to the Indian setting.

Almost every weekend (preferably Saturday afternoon shows), I would watch Hindi films in theaters irrespective of what critical reviews say about the films. Gradually, I developed some aversion to Hindi films and my visits to theatres became fewer. I guess, by mid-1975, my visits to theatres for watching Hindi films was considerably reduced to a couple of films in a year, that too after reading positive reviews or on the recommendation of my relatives/friends. The last Hindi film which I watched in the theatre was ‘83’ (2021) in the last week of December 2021. Of course, now OTT platforms have given an alternative option to watch the films of our choices and our convenient time at home with family.

With the 300th post behind me, I can really get on with my regular song posts. I missed a few anniversary posts in November and December, but a few are coming up in the remaining days of December.
How does one start a birthday post for controversy’s favourite child? I have a little doubt whether he is controversy’s favourite child or controversy is his favourite child.
