HAM LOG (1951) was a typical Zia Sarhadi film highlighting the social issues in keeping with the socialistic ideology followed by Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). The film was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone. In this film, social issues were raised that arose out of the difficulties faced by a poor family of Lalaji Harcharandas (Kanhaiyalal) and his wife (Durga Khote), unemployed son Raj (Balraj Sahani), a sickly daughter Paro (Nutan) and a school going son (Master Ratan). The problem is further accentuated by the arrest of Lalaji for allegedly stealing money from his employer for which he is sent to prison.

“Hum Log’ (1951) is a production from the banner of Ranjit Movietone, but more than that, it is a signature piece by Zia Sarhadi, who has written and directed this film. This film is one of the earlier examples of Neo-Realism in Indian Cinema, a school of cinematic expression that was pioneered in the west by directors such as Luis Bunuel (Spain), Vittorio DeSica (Italy), Luchino Visconti (Italy), Yasujiro Ozu (Japan) and Jean Renoir (France). Although the film did not have any commercial success, it still is considered as the cult classic in the genre of Neo-Realism in Indian Cinema.

There are some Hindi film songs, especially of early 50s, which have been in my memory bank since childhood and those includes the songs from “Hum Log” (1951). Two songs of this film viz. Chali jaa chali jaa chali jaa and Chhun chhun chhun baaje paayal (Ham Log) were very popular when the film was released. Those days, these songs were quite often played over loudspeakers in my neighbourhood.
