‘Beraham’ (1980) was produced by K D Shorey and was directed by Raghunath Jhalani. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Mala Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, I S Johar, Keshto Mukherjee, Rinku Jaiswal, Manmohan, Raj Mehra, Dev Kumar, Helen, Padmini Kapila, Brahm Bhardwaj, Viju Khote etc. Moushumi Chatterjee made a special appearance in the role of a qawwali singer. It was a last film for Mala Sinha in a lead role.

Delhi-born Raghunath Jhalani started him filmy career in 1950s joining Bimal Roy as assistant director. He assisted him in about half a dozen films until Bimal Roy’s death. He debuted as an independent director in J Om Prakash’s ‘Aaye Din Bahaar Ke’ (1966). He directed 10 films, most of which were musical family dramas. It was a rare occasion for him when he admirably handled the genre of crime-action-thriller film, ‘Beraham’ (1980).

Today (24 february 2019) is the 95th birth anniversary of Talat Mehmood (24 February 1924-9 May 1998).

Talat Mehmood sang some 450 songs in all which includes HFM as well as NF songs. This blog contains 377 of his songs. So we are only about 70 odd songs short of covering all Talat Mehmood songs in the blog.

Today, on this occasion, here is a non film song of Talat Mehmood. Like most NFS, this song too has superb lyrics which are penned by Jigar Muradabadi. The song is composed by Iqbal. The date of release in not known, and I have assumed it to be 1960.

I am thankful to Ava Suri who, about a month back, had suggested to me to consider presenting a NFS ghazal ‘saaqi ki har nigaah pe bal khaa ke pee gaya’ (1965) sung by Rafi. Let me confess that I had missed listening to this great ghazal of Jigar Moradabadi all these years. This request gave me an opportunity to study in detail the ghazals of Jigar Moradabadi who was considered the last icon of classical Urdu poetry. He was such an interesting personality that I am tempted to write a full length article on him for the Blog which I will do in the near future.

I had listened to most of the audio clips of Begum Akhtar’s ghazals and other semi-classical songs uploaded on YT. She had rendered ghazals of many well known Urdu poets like Ghalib, Mir, Daagh, Momin Khan Momin, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Jigar Moradabadi, Firaq Ghorakhpuri, Behzad Lucknowi etc. In the later part of her singing carrier, she sang ghazals of the then emerging poets like Shamim Jaipuri, Shakeel Badayuni, Kaifi Azmi, Sudarshan Faakir, Amir Qabalbash etc. Jigar Moradabadi was one of her favourite poets. Begum Akhtar started singing his ghazal sometime in the second half of 30s when Jigar was already popular among the mushiara audience because of his captivating style of rendering his poetry. Because of his popularity, he was called ‘people’s poet’.

Most of us are aware that a ghazal is a series of couplets (she’rs), each one being independent of others. In fact each she’r is a poem by itself. So theoretically, she’rs written by different poets (shaayars) can be woven to make it a ghazal. This is easier said than done as there are other parameters to make it a traditional ghazal. Normally, there are five essential aspects of a traditional ghazal. They are
