Blog Day :

6200 Post No. : 19145

Today (9 July 2025) is the birth centenary of Guru Dutt (9 July 1925-10 october 1964). What a coincidence that today is 6200th day of the blog as well.

Guru Dutt had already carved a niche for himself in Hindi film industry by the time he was gone. He was just 39 years old when he expired. He had a very troubled personal life which took its toll on him (as well as on his wife Geeta Dutt). Both of them legends, but both of them were taken away when so young. Guru Dutt left for the heavenly abode at the age of 39, Geeta Dutt was 41 when she departed. Both of them already have two decades of stellar accomplishments behind them and both had become legends by the time they departed.

It is worth noting that almost all movies where Guru Dutt figured have already been YIPPEED in the blog. Only exception being “Lakharani” (1945) which was his debut film, and “Sailaab”(1956). His other films, viz. “Hum Ek Hain”(1946), Girls’s school”(1949), “Sangram” (1950),”Baazi”(1951), “Jaal”(1952), “Baaz”(1953), “Aar Paar”(1954), Mr and Mrs 55 (1955), “CID”(1956),’Pyaasa”(1957), Kaaghaz Ke Phool”(1959), “Chaudhvin Ka Chaand”(1960),”Saahib Bibi aur Ghulam”(1962) ,”Bahurani”(1963) and “Saanjh aur Sawera”(1964) have already been YIPPEED in the blog.

Today’s song is from a rare and less known film ‘Lakharani’ from 1945.

Although this was a film made by the great Prabhat Film Company of Poona, unlike earlier Prabhat films this movie never became famous or a landmark film. The reasons were many. The main reason was that it was was made in the period when the company had become very weak after V Shantaram left Prabhat Studios along with some of his chosen people from various departments. Secondly, the storyline of this film was far away from the type of films Prabhat had made in the past. True to its tradition, however, the film had a central theme of “open entry for all castes into Hindu temples“. But it was told through a story of tribal folks and allied jungle people, with whom probably, the audience could not  identify themselves.
