“Miss India”(1957) was directed by I S Johar for Rawal Films, Bombay. The movie had Nargis, Pradeep Kumar, Nishi, Shammi, Tuntun, Sheela Vaz, Minoo Mumtaz, I S Johar, Pran etc in it.

If a “Miss India “ contestant were to be asked, during the question- answer round, “What would be your next goal, if you were crowned ?”, she is unlikely to say “Mother India” :). But that is exactly what has been seen in Nargis’s celluloid journey. After her portrayal in & as ‘Miss India’ (January 1957), which cannot be described a winner at box office, she went on to portray ‘Mother India’ (October 1957) which turned out to be a land mark cinema.

Generally, when we come to century posts, we have celebrations connected to it. Almost always, we have at least one anniversary that we connect with a century post, or we have a certain artist also complete a century or a multi century individual milestone along with the blog century milestone. Everyone is aware that 1957 saw the movie “Mother India” in which Nargis played the central character. Few people know that the same year also saw the release of another movie called “Miss India”. And guess who played the central character in this movie ? It was none other than Nargis herself !

The present generation of people are aware that India became an independent country in 1947 and a democracy in 1950, but it is difficult for them to imagine the changes, trannsformations, upheavals and paradigm shifts that the general poplulation had to suffer in the earlier years of this newly independent nation.

If Nargis was “Mother India”, then who was “Miss India” ? Few people may be aware of it, but both these movies were released in the same year viz 1957. “Mother India” went on to become a timeless classic, whereas “Miss India” was forgotten. And interestingly, Nargis herself was in the lead role of “Miss India” too.
