If Nargis was “Mother India”, then who was “Miss India” ? This is my favourite quiz to movie lovers. And incidentally both these movies were released in the same year viz 1957.
I have posted two songs from “Miss India” (1957) in this blog in the past. Here is another song from this movie that I came across just now. It is a delightful song to watch and listen to.
The song is sung by Shamshad Begam. The song is picturised as a roadside tamasha song, where Minu Mumtaz sings and dances and public gather around her to see her dance. A few moments later, a person dressed like Raj Kapoor and showing similar mannerisms appear on the scene. You try to recognise the person. Who could it be ? It is not Raj Kapoor for sure. The person looks like a very young Sanjay Dutt . Sanjay Dutt did you say ? Yes, indeed, it is none other than Sanjay Dutt’s mom. Yes, it is Nargis who is dressed here in a masculine dress. Yes, Mother India also played Miss India, that too in the same year. It is indeed Nargis, and she looks cute dressed like a male in this song.
The song is written by Rajinder Krishan and music is composed by S D Burman. Every one associated in creating this song has excelled here. This song is a forgotten gem. I hope more people will have the good fortune to listen to this superb song.
