After being the relative wilderness of unfamiliar artists from 1941 to 1944, Mukesh’s career took an upwards turn in 1945 with the release of ‘Pehli Nazar’. And 1946 turned out to be the best years thus far for him. In this year, Mukesh got singing assignments with five films. He sang for music director MA Mukhtar in the film ‘Chehraa’ – one solo and one duet with
Shamshad Begum. Both these songs have been discussed here on this blog recently, He sang a duet with Beenapani Mukherjee for the film ‘Druban’. There is a little uncertainty about the music director for this film (more about that later). Then, under the baton of Hansraj Behl, he rendered a wonderful duet with Sushila Rani for the film ‘Gwaalan’ –
Lagat Najar Tori Chalaiyya morey gore badan ko. This song also already appears on this blog. Then for the film ‘Raajputaani’, he sang a solo and a duet, under the music direction of Bulo C Rani. And lastly, he sang another duet song for music director Hanuman Prasad in the film ‘Raseeli’. Going up to seven songs in one year was a whole lot better than an average of two or three songs per year for the prior five years (1941-45).

The year is 1946, and the song “Dil Jalta Hai. . .” from ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945, MD – Anil Biswas) is now well known. The staying power and popularity of this song can be judged from the fact that over the years, many people started to consider this song as his debut song, completely forgetting his other songs from 1941 to 1944. With this success behind him, Mukesh was now a more sought after singer, as is evident from the dramatic increase in his singing assignments in 1946.

The first five years of Mukesh’s career, from 1941 to 1945 were sketchy, and not very productive. The available records show that he sang 14 songs in six films during these five years. His singing did not capture much attention, and Mukesh was a discouraged man, contemplating to leave Bombay and return home to Delhi. But then in 1945, ‘Pehli Nazar’ happened, under the baton of Anil Biswas. And after the release of ‘Pehli Nazar’, Mukesh’s career was on the up and up.

In the long string of ‘Ustad’ films, here is one that is a new entrant for this blog. ‘Birju Ustad’ is a 1964 film from the banner of Movie Miracles, Bombay, directed by Manu Desai. The cast of actors is almost the standard fare – Sheikh Mukhtar and Chandrashekhar are in this movie. The rest of the star cast includes Vijaya Choudhary, Mukri, Uma Dutt, Tuntun, Minoo Mumtaz, Ridkoo, Jyoti Desai, Nazir Kashmiri, Kamal Mohan, Fazal, Karim, Haroon, Ajit, Shamina, E Tarapore, Frooque, Prem Sagar, TN Charlie, Jerry Mason, Appa Khaire, Jeet Waala, Sunanda, Rafia Sultana.

Now this song is really something. The scenario that is presented in these verses, is one that would be close to the hearts of every married couple with the caveat that they live in a joint family. (Those who do not live in a joint family, of any type, may discount this experience. 🙂 ). The song is about the moments of romance that a married couple can steal, maybe in the night, when all other members are blissfully asleep. The husband reaches out to his wife, and the wife complains about all the hard work she has to manage at home during the day. The husband placates her and tries to convince her that the household chores are no big deal and for him, and that for him, she still is as beautiful as the chirpy, naughty mynah bird.

It is well known that the film that really launched the career of Mukesh was the 1945 film ‘Pehli Nazar’. And in this film, the most enduring sound has been the song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”, sung by Mukesh. Apart from this timeless and iconic song, Mukesh has sung three more song in this film. One more solo song, and two duets with Naseem Akhtar. The solo song is “Tai Kar Ke Badi Door Se Purpech Dagariyaa”, a light hearted song of a young heart in search of love. The duet is the title song “Laga Pehli Nazar Ka Teer”. These three songs are now already present on this blog.
