What does one say about a film named ‘Gvaalan’ (Milkmaid) that was released 1946, exactly 65 years ago? Obscure, unknown, rare are the words that come to mind. Looking for early films of Hansraj Behl, I came across a few songs of this film in my collection, that are undoubtedly rare – and not yet published anywhere. As per the history of Hansraj Behl’s films, this film is one of the three films released in 1946 for which this music director has composed the music. Going by this information, this can very well be his debut film. The other two films released in 1946 with music by him are ‘Pujaari’ and ‘Phulwaari’.
About the film, it is produced under the banner of Amar Pictures, and is directed by Baburao Patel. The music is composed by Hansraj Behl and the lyrics are by Pt. Indra. The star cast listing includes Sushila Rani, Trilok Kapoor, Bipin Gupta, Madhuri, Sheikh Hussain, Bikram Kapoor, David, Noorjehaan, Master Ratan, Shanta Kumari, Altaaf Hussain, Karan Singh, Nagendra, Pt. Iqbal, Yusuf etc.
The singing voices are of Sushila Rani and Mukesh. Again, this should be one of the earliest duet songs of Mukesh. About picturization, I can only guess. Since we see the name of Sushila Rani in the list of actors, most likely this song is performed on screen by herself and possibly Trilok Kapoor.
A romantic tete-a-tete between lovers, the song has some very catchy verses, that may still put a flutter in the heart of young lovers. A delightful melody playing again after many a decades.
lagat nazar tori
chhalaiyyaa morey gorey badan ko
karat ratiyaa chori
chhalaiyyaa morey gorey badan ko
O pretender (of love)
I can feel your eyes
Passing over my fair face
And in the night
You come to steal
(A touch of) my fair face
(NOTE: ‘chhalaiyyaa’ is a variant of the word ‘chhaliaa’ which means a person who pretends to be what he is not. The word ‘badan’ actually means ‘face’. Over years it had become equated to the physical body, but the actual meaning is ‘face’.)
aaj suhaag ki raat suhaani
jaagi hai ab preet puraani
kheloongi tum sang hori
Tonight is the pleasant night
Of the first tryst of newlyweds
Emotions of love, dormant for ages
Are blossoming tonight
Tonight I shall play game of colors, with you
chaand chhupaa hai, ab naa daro ji
mann mein hai, wo baat kaho ji
sainyyaan kyun bainyyaan madodi
The moon is not shining tonight
So be not apprehensive (that someone may see us)
Tonight is the night to say in words
That which is hidden in your heart
sainyyaan kyun bainyyaan madodi
O my dear, why did you twist my arm
chhedo na raja, chhodo ji pallaa
dekho ji baalmaa, gir jaaye chhallaa
O my love, do not tease me so
Let go, do not pull at my veil
See, the ringlets from my fingers may fall off
kaahe sambhaale laaj ghunghat ki
preet judi hai antar-pat ki
maano mijaajan, maano hatthilee
Why after all, are your trying
To safekeep your veil
Now that
The tender affection in our hearts
Is bonded together
Heed to my pleas
O willful and haughty darling of mine
jaao kaahe bar-jori
Stay away
Don’t try to force your intentions on me

Waah, waah ! What a great song ! This song is a rare gem indeed !
The female singer Sushila Rani is the wife of Baburao Patel, the famous editor of “Film India”.She was still around and was taking care of their vast estate in Mumbai’s post locality, fending off land sharks who are giving her a hard time. I read about her a few months back in a detailed article in the sunday edition of an Hindi newspaper, and from that time onwards I was looking for a few songs sung by her, mainly in movies produced by Baburao Patel.
This song is rarest of rare, and very special indeed. Thanks for this article on this song. It has made my day.
