Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 35
————————————–
I had never heard of the film AANDHI (1940) until I came across a couple of mp3 audio clips of the songs from the film. It was more surprising for me when I came to know that the film was from the stable of New Theatres Ltd. Of course, the film was produced under the banner of Associated Productions Ltd, probably an associate or subsidiary of the New Theatres. The film was directed by Dinesh Ranjan Das, a name I heard for the first time. The star cast included Pankaj Mullick and Mollina Devi in lead roles supported by Nemo, Shreelekha, Manjari, Muzamil, K C Dey etc.

In this conquest of the East, the Lion’s share was that of NEW THEATRES-set up and owned by B N Sircar. New Theatres was not just a production company, but it was an Institution and a school for developing artistes in the 30s and the 40s.

This song will take you on a brief three minute journey of delightful music and singing.  Unknown and obscure gems such as this one, tell me that Hindi film music is poorer than what should have been; that there are less than 20 songs in Hindi films by this voice, her mainstay being Bangla films and Bangla non-film and religious songs.

Remembering Utpala Sen on the anniversary of her passing away (13th May).

This article is the 10600th song post in the blog.

The wait has been prickly. Eyebrows have been raised. Murmurs of disquiet are being heard. The posts have been delayed on the blog. Important posts, important anniversaries are overdue. All due to me. There is so much that has happened, that should have been covered at least two or three days ago. Multiple posts are in progress with me, and also posts and requests for anniversaries are piled up and waiting in the mailbox. On my side, I have a string of very plausible ‘excuses’ in my defense. But those details can wait. 🙂  The primaries first – it is six hundredth milestone that had to be breached, that is holding up everything else.

On a clear night, one can see a million stars in the sky. While there are the bright and shining stars that will readily draw the viewer’s gaze, the sky is full of more distant dots of light that twinkle with a dimmer light. As the gaze traverses across the boundless skies, one realizes that the sky is so full with dimmer stars that are content to shine with lesser light. For every bright and luminous star, there are a score of dimmer stars that dot the tapestry of heavens, completing the intricate design of the skies. Without these less luminous partners, the sky would look barren, as it does on the nights when there is smog in the air. The viewer’s gaze can then make out just a handful of the more luminous stars, while the spread of the sky is simply an austere shade of grey, bare and lonely.
