‘Poonam Ki Raat’ is a film from almost 50 years ago. And the thought comes to mind that the period of time from which we remember the best loved music is now receding in history. Just the films and songs that used to be new and fresh in mind and in media, are now counted as half century old, and even older.

‘Poonam Ki Raat’ (1965) – a film that is rich in wonderful songs. The lyrics from the pen of Shailendra and the lilting tunes from the baton of Salil Chaudhry, have made almost all songs of this film as wonderful gems. Three songs from the film are already represented here – the soulful and pensive rendering of “Dil Tadpe Tadpaaye” by Rafi Saab, the fabulous, ritzy dance number “Ta Dhim Tana Dhim. . .” that only Asha Bhosle can do, and the haunting sounds of “Saathi Re. . . Tujh Bin Jiyaa Udaas Re” in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. So now it is the turn of a romantic duet to follow. The saga of Hindi films will never be complete without the discussion of the “formula” that used to be, and continues to be, followed by the production banners. More often than not, once a film became a hit, and brought profits for the producers, generally there used to be a spate of new productions trying to imitate the theme, the storyline, and the main attractive ingredients of that successful film, in an effort to duplicate that success. Over a period of time, such duplications would get refined into a list of specific ingredients that should be part of a film production strategy. Besides the components of the storyline, and type of characters and the list of events that should form part of the film, a main item of consideration was the type of music and songs that a film should contain.

It happens quite often in this blog that when a song is discussed, readers exclaim- “what ! How come this song was not discussed as yet !”. My explanation is that there have been tens of thousands of great songs in Hindi movies, and we have discussed just a small portion of that huge collection of songs, so omission of many great songs should come as no surprise. Hopefully the number of omitted songs will gradually come down as we add more and more of such songs.

Remembering Rafi Saab on his 87th birth anniversary
It is thirty one years now that Rafi Saab left this mortal world. As per Hindu scriptures, ‘shabd’ or word / sound is eternal. And thus the voice of Rafi Saab. Probably the most mellifluous, and the most pliable voice that has ever graced the Hindi silver screen and the radio airwaves. The loss at a reasonably young and active age of 55, has been irreplaceable, as the past three decades have shown. Many contenders came and tried to take his place. But in the test of time, Rafi Saab towers above all and his voice, now emanating from electronic storage, still strums the strings of the heart, as they did decades ago.
