Dil tadpe tadpaaye

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Remembering Rafi Saab on his 87th birth anniversary

It is thirty one years now that Rafi Saab left this mortal world. As per Hindu scriptures, ‘shabd’ or word / sound is eternal. And thus the voice of Rafi Saab. Probably the most mellifluous, and the most pliable voice that has ever graced the Hindi silver screen and the radio airwaves. The loss at a reasonably young and active age of 55, has been irreplaceable, as the past three decades have shown. Many contenders came and tried to take his place. But in the test of time, Rafi Saab towers above all and his voice, now emanating from electronic storage, still strums the strings of the heart, as they did decades ago.

Poonam Ki Raat (1965) is a film produced and directed by Kishore Sahu. Not so much an obscure film, but yes it is very well known on account of its music. The combined talents of Shailendra (lyrics) and Salil Chaudhry (music compositions) has resulted in a number of gems that make this film memorable. This is the first song from this film to be posted on this blog, and I am sure the other songs will follow in quick succession. If I remember correctly, this film is about love found and love lost, and also about the mysteries of life and death. In the early 60s, Manoj Kumar was the staple male lead actor for many such mystery movies, and he is the hero in this one too. The remaining cast includes Kumud Chhugaani, Nandini, Kishore Sahu, Bela Bose, Shiv Kumar, Rajendranath, Ravindra Bannerjee, Prem Chopra, Parveen Chaudhary, Sapru, Raj Kishore, Bhardwaj, Jankidas, Shailesh Kumar, Sarita, Goperaj etc.

The sound of Rafi Saab’s voice, is so enchanting, almost haunting, as he renders this wonderful song. The first few lines, that are rendered without music, set the stage for what follows, and displays the immense emotion that Rafi Saab is able to infuse into the compositions. The composition by Salil Da has an arresting quality, that stays on in the mind. The value of this soulful emotion is not done justice to, by the histrionics of Manoj Kumar as he performs it on the screen. Yet, in itself, this song is a lovely composition, a memorable one.

There is a female accompaniment, a voice that is heard in between the antaraas. The label does not identify any credits for this voice. I request other knowledgeable readers to please help to identify this voice

dil tadpe tadpaaye
jin ke milan ko tarse, wo to na aaye
mausam aaye jaaye

This anguished heart of mine
Torments me even more
The seasons come and go, as they will
Yet the one for whom this heart yearns
Has not come back to me

sapne to kho gaye kar ke deewaanaa mujhe
karni pe apne dil ki padaa pachhtaanaa mujhe
khud ko manaa loon, dukhde chhupaa loon
dil ki lagi haaye kaun bujhaaye

My dreams have deserted me
After robbing me of my peace and reason
And now only repentance remains
For the deeds I have done
Maybe I can mollify my self
Maybe I can hide my sorrows
But this fire that burns in the heart
Is there any way to douse it

sapnon ke saathi mere, dam bhar to aa jaa
ghaayal mere dil ko dheeraj bandhaa jaa
teri hi yaadein, teri hi baaten
behle na ab meraa jee behlaaye

Even if for a moment, please do come to me
O the companion of my dreams
And placate this wounded heart of mine
Your memories in my mind
And things that I can think about
I try to appease it, but no,
This heart pays no heed

rasta na soojhe koi, na koi manzil
saathi bechaaraa mera toota huaa dil
kis ko sadaa doon, kis ko pukaaroon
daste hain mere dil ko raaton ke saaye

(In this gloom and shadows)
I can make out neither the path
Nor the end
For the only companion I have
Is this dejected heart of mine
There is none that I can call out to
(In this loneliness)
The shadows of the night
Haunt me, torment me

In 1963 Salilda made a privately recorded song in Bengla… “Jodi Kichu Amare Sudhao”
Singer was Shyamal Mitra.
Shyamal loved the song so Salilda gave it to Shyamal.
And he made Hindi tune in Rafi voice and this song is equally good as Benagla by Mitra.

Heard this song for the first time today. What an absolutely lovely song! Sung so beautifully by Rafi saab to Salil da’s lovely music.Like Sudhirji says, Manoj Kumar doesn’t quite do justice to this song – he overdoes the emotions, thereby making you cringe.

I notice here some hallmarks of Salil da’s unique composition style. I am 100% sure another composer would have composed this TOTALLY differently. For example, SJ would have composed this in “yaad na jaaye” style, SD would have composed this in “din dhal jaaye” style. But Salil da’s style was always the chirpy type, with some western elements thrown in – we see it in later years in “zindagi kaisi hai paheli” (Anand) and “kai baar yunh bhi dekha hai” (Rajnigandha). So even though this is a sad song, we see how beautifully Salil da is able to use his unique style to give it a completely different twist and take it to a different level altogether. Just love the styles of different composers.

Thanks so much for coming up with this, Sudhirji. Love the write-up too. As usual. 🙂

Sudhir ji,
POONAM KI RAAT-1965 was a Kishore Sahu film in totality. He not only Produced, directed it,but also wrote the story,s/play,dialogues and also acted in it.
Prakash Gupta is accompanying his friend Chandan to his hometown, where Chandan’s father is ailing.just before entering town,Prakash hears from villagers that Lala Vaijnath,Chandan’s father murdered a young girl-Rani,whose ghost roams in the bungalow.he is curious. When he enters trhe house,he meets Jyoti,Chandan’s younger sister, with whom he falls in love immediately.
In the night there are whispering and moaning sounds of a girl.Nandini,Chandan’s other sister is equally beautiful. The mystery deepens when the Lalaji’s nurse is murdered. There are too many characters to doubt, smart family doctor, silent chandan, complaining mother, calculating elder brother, scheming sister in law, widowed sister, her tempormental son or any of the many servants.
only because of too many suspects, the entire film became weak, and the suspense diluted.
Poonam ki Raat was the debut movie of KUMUD CHHUGANI.
Kumud Chhugani was an accomplished classical dancer, who had won a trophy from Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963 youth festival at Delhi. She was a talented actress too.She acted in 18 films in a span of 20 years. Her heroes were like,Dharmendra,Bishvajit,Joy mukherjee,Rajendra Kumar,Manoj Kumar,Sanjay Khan etc.Her last film was Karmayudh-1985.
She acted in several Hindi and Gujarati plays also.
After retirement, she is helping her husband in his Interior Decoration business in Mumbai.
