Salil Chowdhury or Salilda as he was known in the Indian Film industry…mind the term Indian here and not Bollywood—would have been about 94 years old (on 19th November) if he had been there. He was an active music composer for Malayam, Bengali and Hindi movies. That is the reason for me using the term “Indian Film Industry”. Born in West Bengal he spent his childhood in the Tea Gardens of Assam. He came to Calcutta (Kolkata) for his graduate studies and that is when he joined IPTA. His musical career had a take off from here when he wrote and set songs to tune for IPTA. His film debut came in the Bengali film of 1949 “Paribortan” and his Hindi debut was Bimal Roy’s “Do Bigha Zamin” in 1952. His Malayalam debut was “Chemeen” in 1964. He did about 75 Hindi. 40 Bengali and 27 Malayalam movies. We can find his music in a few Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Oriya and Assamese films too.

As I was going through the blog I found that “Agni Pareeksha” (1981) had music by Salilda. On further hunting I came across a very hummable song in the vocals of Kishore Kumar that was written by Yogesh. The song has Amol Palekar singing for a puppet show and Rameshwari and Parikshit Sahani squirming very much like Rajendra Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in “Dost dost na raha, pyar pyar na raha,” style. Seeing this I resolved to see the movie to get the song in context.

After having sat through 2 hours and 15 minutes of the movie “Agni Pareeksha” this is what I learnt or deduced:-

Sometimes even the best intentions of the producer (this movie is produced by B.R. Chopra death anniversary was on 5th November) and good acting by an able actor meaning Amol Palekar (24th November birthday i.e. today) are not enough to save a movie with a bad story and script no matter who the director is (Kamal Majumdar). Added to that one has to tolerate an actor who hams -Parikshit Sahni and an actress (Rameshwari) who has nothing much to do.

The story revolves around the estate and business of a rich lady (Veena) who has a son (Amol Palekar) undergoing treatment in psychiatric’s (Iftikhar) nursing home to get over a trauma. The son has seen his father commit suicide by jumping off a bridge into a river prompted by his wife- Veena’s ex-love’s (Dr.Shreeram Lagoo) return. This is the cause of the son’s trauma.

Meanwhile, Veena takes the responsibility of looking after the upbringing of an orphan girl (Rameshwari) -who turns out to be a good student and eventually a good companion to the now-aged Veena. She also assists the aged lady in handling her factories and other businesses after they find that the manager (Utpal Dutt in a negative role) is not liked by the workers of the factory.

The workers prefer to toe the line of their engineer (Parikshat Sahni), so Veena puts the engineer and Meeta (Rameshwari) in charge of the factories etc. In addition, she assigns the engineer a job to convince her son to return home plus to add confusion to the story she starts toying with the idea of having Meeta for a daughter-in-law.

As luck would have it Meeta and the engineer have fallen in love, and the son (Amol Palekar) also develops a liking for Meeta the instant he sees her. Then follows the usual round of sacrifices between the lovers so that ‘Maalkin’ and her son are happy; the son is instigated by the ex-manager to doubt the lovers; Meeta runs away to marry the engineer and the son shoots himself with a gun that has the engineer’s fingerprints enough to accuse the engineer of the murder. What follows is the family and Meeta trying their level best with the help of Dr. Shreeram Lagoo to save the engineer from the gallows.

So that my friends is the “Agni Pareeksha” that the audience is put to.

After having graduated from J.J. School of Arts Mumbai, and working in a bank alongside being active on stage, Amol Palekar made his movie debut in Satyadev Dubey’s Marathi movie “Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe!” and Basu Chatterjee’s Rajnigandha was his first Hindi release. This led to many other ‘middle-class boy next door’ roles for almost the entire 70s and he did his act so well that when he did a serial-killer in Vinod Chopra’s “Khamosh” or a grey-shaded Kishan Lal in Anil Ganguly’s “Aanchal” it came as a shock to the audience.

He had done a grey-shaded character very early on in his career in Shyam Benegal’s 1977 release “Bhumika” too; but essentially, he was always the friendly-neighborhood good boy. On running through his filmography, it is seen that his movie career started around the same time as the Amitabh Bachchan’s but they got to act together only in the 2001 releases “Aks” where Amol had a brief role of a defence minister though AB did a friendly appearance in “Golmaal” (1979).

Today he has returned to his first love – painting though he says he is still open to doing movies if he finds them interesting.

Wishing our Ram Prasad alias Laxman Prasad alias Amol Palekar a happy and healthy life- and a very Happy Birthday.

“Sapan Suhaane”(1961) was directed by Kedar Kapoor for K R Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Balraj Sahni, Geeta Bali, Bhagwan, Kamini Kadam, Chandrashekhar, K N singh, Leela Mishra, Parveen Paul, Samson, Ram Mohan, Helen etc in it.

Lata Mangeshkar who first sang in a Marathi film ‘Gajabhau’ (1944), is still continuing to sing for Hindi films albeit very sparingly. As per http://www.myswar.com, she sang a solo song for the film ‘Dunno No Y2 Life is a Moment’ (2015). That gives her playback career a span of over 7 decades – a world record, I guess, in playback singing for films. In fact, she sang for 46 films between 2000-2015. I thought why not do a similar exercise for Talat Mehmood.

“Honeymoon”(1960) was produced and directed by Lekhraj Bhakri. The movie had Sayeeda Khan, Manoj Kumar, Vijay Chowdhury, Radhakishan, Lalita Pawar, Sabita Chatterjee etc in it.

‘Poonam Ki Raat’ (1965) – a film that is rich in wonderful songs. The lyrics from the pen of Shailendra and the lilting tunes from the baton of Salil Chaudhry, have made almost all songs of this film as wonderful gems. Three songs from the film are already represented here – the soulful and pensive rendering of “Dil Tadpe Tadpaaye” by Rafi Saab, the fabulous, ritzy dance number “Ta Dhim Tana Dhim. . .” that only Asha Bhosle can do, and the haunting sounds of “Saathi Re. . . Tujh Bin Jiyaa Udaas Re” in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. So now it is the turn of a romantic duet to follow. And this song here is one wonderful melodious creation, with voices of Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee saw a Japanese movie in a film festival and he was so impressed with that movie that he not only made it into “Anand”, but he also later remade his own remake ( with the protagonist a female this time) into “Mili”.

Legend has it that Salil Chaudhari, the leading music director of 1950s refused to take Kishore Kumar seriously on finding out that Kishore Kumar was untrained in classical music. But when he listened to Kishore Kumar’s voice, Salil Chaudhari changed his opinion and agreed to use Kishore Kumar’s voice in his forthcoming movie called “Naukri”, where Kishore Kumar incidentally was acting too.
