Scandals in public life, especially crimes of passion, have always attracted the attention of Hindi movie makers and a few of them have actually gone on and made movies based on such scandals. Even at present, we find a movie maker making a movie on a woman who murdered her ex boyfriend with the help of her current flame.

“Bhai Bhai” (1956) is a movie that starred Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Nirupa Roy,Nimmi,Shyama, Beena, Daisy Irani, Master Chhotu etc. This movie , which was directed by Nitai Palit had some very nice songs in it. I have already discussed three songs from this movie in the past.

Though I subscribe to three newspapers daily, I rarely go through much of their contents and the newspapers finally end up with the “raddiwala” after a few months. But on saturdays I look forward to these newspapers, rather to one column of one newspaper. It is the “Swar panchami” column of Hindi newspaper “Dainik Bhaskar”. In this column, Vividh Bharati radio announcer Yunus Khan discusses a few old songs. And as can be guessed, this topic is right up my alley.

It was pointed out to me by readers that songs of “Khandaan” (1965) were conspicuous by their absence in the blog. Not just that, I was gently given the hint to discuss the songs of this movie with the lyrics of songs to this movie being e mailed to me. I have succumbed to the persuasion 😀 and as many as two songs from this movie have been discussed in the blog so far.

I have mentioned in the past that I believed Nutan to be the original tragedy queen, before Meena Kumari joined in playing such roles. But just now I have realised that the crown of the original tragedy queen should go to Nimmi who was playing such roles almost from the beginning of her career, which began prior to Nutan and Meena Kumari’s forays in to tragedy roles.

It is often said that Hindi movies do not represent reality, rather they are make believe stuff. The fact is, they take stories that seem plausible enough and then add their own fancy unrealistic stuff. And since audiences tend to lap it up, they continue to churn out such movies till the taste of public changes. And this public taste does change with time.

“Daaman” (1951) is one of those obscure movie about which not much information is available. Songs of such movies tend to be just as obscure but one can often come across some nice songs in such movies.
