“Aarti” (1962) was a Rajshree Productions movie. It was produced by Tarachand Barjatya and directed by Phani Majumdar. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala, Peace Kanwal, Jagirdar, Rajendranath, Vijaya Choudhry, Surekha, Niranjan Sharma, Ramesh Deo, Chandrima Bhaduri, Keshto Mukherjee etc in it.

It is said that Prabaht Films’ ‘Amrit Manthan’ (1934) has the distinction of having songs in ghazal format for the first time. I found that there were 3 songs in this film in ghazal format written by Veer Mohammed Puri. I had never heard of the name of this lyricist (or poet). So the curiosity led me to make a search for his name in websites. Unfortunately, I could not get much information about the lyricist except a hint that he was a poet which I guessed from a ghazal ‘kamsini mein dil pe gham ka bhaar kyon’ from the same film that he had used ‘Veer’ as his takhallus (alias) in the maqta (last she’r) of the ghazal.

‘ X ‘ as we all know is the 24th letter in the alphabetic order of the English Language. Over the years I have often heard the phrase ‘ angrez chale gaye aur yeh angrezi chhod gaye…… ‘ This was usually in response to someone saying either ”sorry’ or ‘thank you’. The aspersion on the whole language was cast as ‘sorry’ and ‘thank you’ seem more formal and trivial words, compared to our own ‘ shukriya ‘ and ‘ mu’aaf kijiye ‘ or ‘dhanyawad’ and ‘kshama kijiye’ .

Similarly, the alphabet ‘ X ‘ of the English language is surplus to requirement as far as Hindi /Urdu are concerned.
