“Taj Mahal” (1963) was directed by M Sadiq for Pushpa Pictures Productions. The movie had Pradeep Kumar (playing Shahjahaan), Bina Rai (playing Mumtaz Mahal), Rehman (playing Jahangir), Veena (playing Noor Jahaan), Jeewan (playing Shaharyar, son of Jahangir and a contender for the crown), Lata Sinha, Balam, Helen, Minoo Mumtaz, Mohan Choti, Sulochana, Sujata, Rajen Haksar, Jabeen Jalil, Murad etc in it.

When I was a kid, I had great difficulty remembering historical facts and I did not have much knowledge about Mughal history except the basic knowledge about the names of the various Mughal emperors. I had not watched the movie “Taj Mahal” (1963) either otherwise I am sure that my understanding of the history of that era would have become more in depth. In fact, I feel that watching the movie as well as visiting historical places of that era, notably Taj Mahal is far more effective way of learning history.

While trying to find out about the story of the movie “Taj Mahal”, I came to realise that the Mughal emperor Shahjahaan was not a soft romantic soul as most of us are given to believe. It turns out that he, like many of his predecessors and also successors, had got all his brothers and uncles killed in order to become the emperor. I had read that Jahangir was succeeded by Shahjahaan, but this succession was not as smooth as I thought. After Jahangeer’s death, Shaharyar was pronounced king at the behest of Noor Jahaan. Asaf Khan (father in law of Shahjehaan and father of Mumtaz Mahal) killed all brothers of Shahjehaan including Shaharyar on the orders of Shahjehaan.

Coming to the movie, “Taj Mahal” (1963) was the biggest musical blockbuster of the year. Roshan won the filmfare award of the best music director for this movie while Sahir Ludhianvi won the best lyricist award for the song “jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega”. This song also topped the Binaca geetmala final that year.

The movie had nine songs in it (including the multiple version song “Jo waada kiya”). As many as eight songs from the movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the ninth and final song from the movie. This song is a court dance song . It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. The song is lip synced by Minu Mumtaz and others while they are watched by Pradeep Kumar, Rehman, Jeewan etc, while the court intrigue is simultaneously afoot. AS the song comes to an end, emperor Jahaageer (Rehman) suffers a heart attack and dies.

With this song,”Taj Mahal” (1963) now joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Lyrics

husn se hai duniya haseen
ishq se hai dil ka yaqeen
dil ka yaqeen
ye jo nahin to kuchh bhi nahin
har dil mein hai ek parda nasheen
har dil mein hai ek parda nasheen

husn ki angdaaiyaan har nazaare mein
har nazaare mein
ho o
ishq ki parchhaiyaan har ishaare mein
har ishaare mein
ojhal kahin aur zaahir kahin
ojhal kahin aur zaahir kahin
zaahir kahin
ojhal kahin aur zaahir kahin
oy oy oy oy
husn se hai duniya haseen
oy oy oy
ishq se hai dil ka yaqeen
oy
dil ka yaqeen
ye jo nahin to kuchh bhi nahin
har dil mein hai ek parda nasheen
har dil mein hai ek parda nasheen

dhadkanon ki raagini
inke dam se hai
inke dam se hai
hoy
aanchalon ki chaandni
inke dam se hai

chaaho to le lo jannat yahin
