So, we are at this familiar landmark again. The landmark of a century post for the blog. This is the 192nd century for the blog. In other words, this article is song post number 19200 for the blog. It appears as if the blog began just a few days ago in the month of july. In reality the blog began in July 2008 (19 July) and today we are in 2025. We have completed 17 years of continuous existence which is quite an achievement for an online activity. It is wonderful to realise that this musical endeavour had brought likeminded music lovers together and they have stuck together all these years. Like Fevicol. 🙂

Today, the 3rd of July is the 72nd birthday of Amit Kumar Ganguly, popularly known as Amit Kumar. Amit Kumar is the son of Kishore Kumar and Ruma Ganguly. Like his father, Amit started singing from an early age and he used to sing at Durga Pooja festivals in Calcutta. At one such function arranged by Bengali actor “Mahanayak” Uttam Kumar, the audience continued requesting encores. While his mother complained that he was singing “filmy” songs, his father decided to bring him to Bombay.

‘Ek hasrat thhi ke aanchal ka mujhe pyaar miley…Zindagi aur bataa tera iraadaa kya hai’
I have been listening to this song since my childhood and I have been liking it without any apparent reason. May be the overall composition touched me somewhere and it remain in my memory since then. Later, as I grew up and listened to this song, I liked its lyrics very much and continue to enjoy it whenever it was played around on radio or elsewhere.

First came “Mother India”(1957) and then came “Son Of India”(1962). Both were produced by Mehboob Khan. Title role in Mother India was played by Nargis whereas the titkle role in “Son of India” was played by Sajid Khan. This Sajid Khan is different from the Sajid Khan that we are familiar with. This Sajid Khan was an adopted son of Mehboob Khan and he acted not only in “Son of India”(1962) but in “Mother India”(1957) as well, playing child version of Sunil Dutt in “Mother India”(1957).

Suniye
Suniye
Suniye
Suniye janaabe waala
Kya kehta hai munaadi waala
Pehle meri baat suniye gaur se
Phir baat kijiye aur se
Hear, hear, hear
Pay heed o gentlemen
Listen to what the town crier has to say
First listen to what I have to say
After that talk with others

“Zindagi Aur Toofaan” (1975) was a movie which had Sajid Khan,Yogita Bali, Helen etc playing important roles in it. This movie was an “art” movie as low budget movies were then called. It was based on a Hindi novel by a noted Hindi author. On you tube, someone mentioned this novel as “Meri Kashti” by Mahaveer Adhikari, though I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this information.

India of 1960s was a much more simple and uncomplicated nation, where cynicism about the nation and its leaders had yet to take roots. People actually looked upto the national leaders. Every household compulsorily had the pictures of national leaders on their drawing room walls. Framed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Prasad, and Jawaharlal Nehru were there in all households.
